I hope realise that a purple tube contains mercury which vaporises when the tube is lit and that you would have contaminated the kitchen microvave if the tube had been fractured.

Its the same reason we no longer do repairs to broken mercury/argon-filled tubes in neon shops.

When en electron goes from a lower to higher energy state, it has to absorb a photon.

When they return from an excited (or go from high energy to lower energy) state, they have to purge a photon to do so. Different amounts of energy mean different colors.

That may be run like a neon, however neon glows red....purple color comes from mercury with a phosphor coating, the green you saw was more then likely just the mercury glowing! Could also be pure argon, but don't know
