Dear God!!! What a bass - a REAL bass...not woofy...not trying to force some dark, fat, woof up into the top of his voice...just free and easy and rich and... GORGEOUS!!! Thanks for uploading!!!
I first heard Clabassi as the superb King in the Price/Solti Aida and I have always loved his voice. What you say, billyguns, is exactly right. And what a perfect figure for Count Rodolfo, handsome, noble, and just a bit rakish! I believe that this is Moffo pre-nose job? Never mind, she was so lovely in this period. By the way, Clabassi is superb as Henry VIII in Anna Bolena with Gencer and Simionato, which was a RAI broadcast.
Che bellissima voce! I am amazed at how VERY little known this great basso is in the USA.Most of the opera fans I know here don't know him at all.Maybe he rarelyleftt Italy to perform.Whatever the case,he should be afforded more recognition. And I agree with sospello, its great to see him finally without a beard ! Bravo Clabassi e mille grazie for sharing this with us.
The wonderful bass shows us here and in a TROVATORE clip that he could also step out as a principal singer; ihe has given us so many wonderful moments on recordings, my favorite being his unsurpassed King of Egypt on two AIDA outings, one with Milanov and the other with Leontyne Price. His father in the Callas FORZA is also memorable. Unlike many singers of today he can sing with line, portamento, nuance, and genuine tenderness. Is that a very young Anna Moffo as Amina?
Clabassi was in the first operas I ever saw. He visited Northern Ireland in the late '60s with an Italian company to sing Don Basilio in Barber of Seville and Bide-the-Bent in Lucia di Lammermoor! Seeing those operas changed my life. This is beautiful singing.
Not the most convincing of actors. But what a gorgeous voice! Plinio Clabassi sings this so beautifully. Thanks so much for posting this. There are so few videos of this great bass on YouTube.
Beautiful! I know many basso singers, but I never heard of or from him. How tasteful, and what a graceful appearance. Yes, incredible musicality! A real discovery, thanks!
