  • This is great! I always loved this show. Paul Lynde was the best! Thanks for posting!

  • :) thanks,

  • When it first started I thought I'd make a curt remark about video. Kept listening anyway and was quite entertained. Thumbs up!

  • That's AWESOME! =D That's very good quality for it's age. How did you record it?

  • @kelboswell I still remember how I did it. I had (and still have) a Sony Stereo cassette recorder. The TV I had at the time, had a headphone jack. I simple patched a cable between the two and ensured the volume was low not to get distortion. I still had the original cassette, so I played it back through the original recorder and digitized the output.

  • THANKS for sharing!!!

  • man they don't make gameshows or talk shows like they used to

  • @truthaddict11 Very true! Thanks for listening.

  • @Jaquilicious88 Hi -- for most of the jokes, you have to be at least 50 years old to understand... and perhaps american too... but, I'm glad you liked it anyway!

  • @chaingangband I'm in my late 30s and got all the jokes.

  • are any of the true/false questions actually true?

  • This was fantastic humor!! Too bad these days are gone. I miss them.

  • great......

  • You can hear florence henderson laughing at around 1:15 very neat!

  • Thanks for the reference.. Take care.

  • Just wanted to let you know I was very fortunate to purchase a Letters from Mama

LP. Awesome record. Brings back so many happy memories. My friend Brian

Hoffman a Red Skelton impersonator will be in Red's home town in Indiana for

a special tribute day. He is so much Red it is beautiful. Catch him on You Tube.

Have a Great Weekend. Love & Hugs, Sandi, Earth Angel in Wisconsin (: (: (:

  • So awesome to find someone that appreciates the special people. Red Skelton is another one of my favorite people. Awesome man and so funny and multi gifted. It seems the really good ones are gone, but am so thankful that their tapes and videos remain with us, so they are also. Have a beautiful day. You are a special person. Talk to you later. God bless. Sandi, Earth Angel in Wisconsin Do you have more videos on You Tube???? (: (: (: 04/27/2010

  • See you learned something today. If I don't learn at least one thing, my day is a total loss. Am waiting for my next client to call, I do counseling. My day starts at 5 a.m. and goes 'til midnight on the average. Try to read at least three new books a week also and newspapers. How old are you? Trying to figure with you doing the recording of such an old show. Sandi, Earth Angel in Wisconsin (: (: (:

  • Trivia for you did you know that George Gobel's Birthday was divisible by 5? May 20,1919. May=5 day 20 and year 1+9+1+9=20. Also the maker of the Gibson Guitar made a special model for George sold in the 50's and 60's the L-5CT made specifically for George because of his short size. Have a great day. Now I am going to see if there are any of those guitars out there...Sandi, Earth Angel in Wisconsin (: (: (:

  • @Dragonese1 No I didn't Interesting statistics!

  • @Dragonese1 What other hobbies have you got?

  • I shall spend more time checking you tube so much neat stuff on you tube. Too bad you didn't record more. Thanks for sharing what you had.

  • @Dragonese1 You're very welcome.

  • Just so you know, just checked out your second video (audio Classic Hollywood Squares) Just as awesome as Part 1. Check around, maybe God willing, you will

find some more tapes you forgot about. I do so hope so....Thank you so much for sharing. Sandi, Earth Angel in Wisconsin aka Dragonese1

  • @Dragonese1 I know that's all I had. and thanks for the kind comments. These guys were funny. There are some video's if you search for them on youtube...

    Take care.

  • Loved both George Gobel and Paul Lynde and it made me soooooooooo happy to hear their voices again. Thank you so very much for sharing. You made my day so much brighter.

  • @Dragonese1 Check out 2 of 2 also... glad you liked it.

  • Paul Lynde R.I.P. what a talent

  • i like the one with redd foxx with the recovered car. "I had mine done in tiger skin"

  • thanks for this!!!! was searching clips of this show and "match-game." two of the funniest game shows ever....it was the format....it was ripe for "tasteless" jokes!!!!!!!--Paul Lynde was the man,,,,,genious

  • I'm glad you liked it!

  • I loved Paul Lynde and even had an autographed photo of him. No I did not know he was gay then-- whatever--he was one of a kind.

  • Another quicksand question:

Peter: Paul, what would probably happen if you fell into quicksand?

Paul: (long pause) Oh, you'd replace me with Charles Nelson Reilly.

  • Hilarious!

  • these are great thanks!

  • You're welcome

  • I remember Paul Lynde's hysterical answers so well. He was a brilliant wit and it is so sad that we lost him so soon. I never really knew the cause of his untimely death.

  • paul lynde died in bed with a young male prostitute from a drug induced heart attack.

  • Thank you for this news, although not pleasant. Frankly, I had heard rumors before but at the time the cause of his death was explained away as simply a sudden heart attack. Unfortunately, in spite of the more open atmosphere of Hollywood, Mr.Lynde never was at peace with his sexuality.

  • @Pectoris4

Thanks for your intelligent reply to this. Paul Lynde was an incredible talent, gone too soon.

  • @Pectoris4, Wow, O _ o never knew until now that Paul Lynde was gay,....well, that don't change his being a cool dude, AWESOME guy, always makes me laugh a lot!!!

  • He was found dead, alone & naked, from an apparent heart attack, but the death was mysterious. His friend found him. It is only assumed that he was with someone the night before because he had a bottle of amyl nitrate (poppers).

  • Not true- he died in his sleep-but like many, he died of a garden variety heart attack-no scandal. A great talent-very much missed.

  • @Pectoris4

He died of a massive heart attack. Years of smoking and heavy drinking were to blame. The Dr said he had the heart of a 85 year old man, although, I think he was 55 when he died.

  • Paul Lynde died of a heart attack in 1982

  • "You mean including their own." Brilliant.

  • No kidding...that was really funny!

  • Peter: "Paul...Lucy does something this time of year,(autumn) and Charlie Brown ends up flat on his back...What is it that Lucy does?"

Paul: "Oh she ah....Sheah massages his little body....

  • brilliant, but one question: is the bald chicken question answered by jonathon winters? sounds like it.

  • Yes, it was. A mistake on my part when I recorded it. I thought he was going to be funny on that joke. (I still remember it!)

  • There's one clip of this show that I would love to see again. It was "True or False", Hyenas have both male and female sex organs", And Paul Lynde answered and I quote - "No wonder they're laughing all the time". It was the funniest thing I'd ever heard.

  • Love how you recorded this...at first i was thinking you had a VCR or something back then. I wish I did when i was younger. Sadly we did the same thing with the cassettes with certain shows lol didn't think to record this...YOU did and that's important...Many actual clips are surfacing here on Youtube , and that's a good thing. I used to watch this on WSBK 38 in re runs during the day.

  • Thanks! Yes VCR's really didn't exist then. I had a Sony TC-160 recorder that I used (oddly enough, I still have it!) and over the course of a few weeks, I recorded these guys. This audio was recorded off of WNBC in New York.

  • THe Tom Bergeron version of Squares is back in reruns on GSN. Craig Shoemaker, comedian and host of VH1's My Generation game show in 1998, was on a recently aired rerun of 1998. Craig admitted to writing to Paul Lynde trying to set Craig's Mom up with him.

  • Thanks for memories of the great Paul and George. 1976 -- I was a senior in high school. They don't make TV shows like this anymore.

    Bravo!!!

  • :) Glad you enjoyed!

  • no video? it is funny............would be much more if you had videos!

    thanks for posting anyway.

  • Well, I was still in high school when I recorded these. Home video systems didn't exist then, at least that were affordable. I used the headphone jack right out of the TV and adjusted the volume on my cassette recorder on the line-in, and captured the audio only.

  • oh my gosh, I just found this and was laughing so hard. Thanks so much for posting this audio!

  • Listen to (2 of 2) also! Glad you liked it.

  • Too bad this kind of humor is gone, all we have today are foul-mouthed morons.

  • No kidding...

  • Paul said the kinkiest, dirtiest things. And he managed to do it without SWEARING.

Now THAT is true talent. Paul was one racy son of a bitch. He is truly an inspiration for generations of smartasses to come.

  • Agreed, ReverendSyn. (Great name, BTW. Obscure character.)

Paul, however, did something once that was beyond cruel: He was backstage at some Broadway show, visiting a friend (I forget who and what show), when Lana Turner walked in. Paul just looked at her and said "You kiiiiiilled him, didn't you?" Miss Turner left. (Look it up, boys and girls. Lana Turner and Johnny Stompanato.)

  • Yeouch.

I had heard about Paul being a notorious alcoholic and as such an exceptionally mean drunk.

    Quite a shame

  • Don't quote me, but I believe his accidental death was because of drinking

  • Indirectly, yes. Paul supposedly had managed to stop drinking almost 5 years before his death. And his attitude had been observed to have lightened up a bit.

But the man didnt take very good care of himself before then so his demise was probably a residual effect.

At least according to the A&E documentary.

  • Cruel??? Lana killed Johnny S. and her daughter took the rap.

  • My vote for best "zinger". Peter: "Paul, in the Revolutionary War, Nathan Hale was hung. Why "? Paul: "Heredity"

  • my mom dated him no joke

  • Seriously, trackmanx23?? I was under the impression that he was extremely gay. Oh well, maybe he was bisexual...

    Unless you meant George Gobel...

  • or Nathan Hale

  • Best Paul Lynde zinger of all time:

Peter: Paul, Roy Rogers has something stuffed and mounted in his office. What is it?

Paul: Oh, no! Not Miss Dale!!

  • Peter: Paul, Pat Nixon says it's her favorite thing....what is it?

Paul: Gee, I have no idea....it must be dick....the president, I mean.

  • well I just say "Hi gang.."

    haha

omg I was sick all day yesterday and I think its going to happen again.

    This is GREAT.

  • Glad you enjoyed it.

  • funny shit

  • thanks! laughed my ass-off

  • Very cool! Glad you enjoyed it.

  • Funny as a ass hair comb for midgets

  • I had the "Zingers from the Hollywood Squares" and "More Zingers from the Hollywood Squares" books. One of my favorite ones was Peter asked Paul Lynde, "Paul, is it true that George C. Scott said he would do a nude scene if the right part came along?" to which Paul answered "You mean, he doesn't have the right part?" Classic.

  • Great response! Those days are long gone.

    Thanks for the funny comment.

  • Chaingangband, I too, used to tape record Paul Lynde's crazy answers! Unfortunately, my tapes are long gone... but not forgotten... Thank You for the memories!

  • Funny! Thanks for sharing!

  • You're welcome...

  • Great clip Chaingangband! I remember Paul being asked, 'in the Bible Paul, Who used to bang his rod on the rocks?? Paul replied, Adam 'till Eve come along!!

I am always wishing to see that one in a video.. What a fun show that was. Thank You Paul Lynde , for the fun you added to peoples lives....

  • That's a good one! :)

  • There was an album and book called "Zingers From The Hollywood Squares" that came out in 1974.

  • Cool -- I have a youtube version! thanks for the comment. :)

  • Awesome!

  • Another good one by the great Paul Lynde.

Peter:When your on a boat/ship and a man falls over board, the proper thing to do is to holler "man over board!" What do u holler when a women falls over board?

    Paul:Full speed ahead!

    classics. I love it!

  • He was always quick, and his timing was right on. I heard of that one before, it is a classic and very funny response!

    Thanks for commenting!

  • BANG!

  • LOL -- Sa' good one.

  • LMAO!!! Toooooooooooo funny!!!

  • Another great quote from Paul Lynde...what a funny man:

Peter Marshall: When you pat a dog on its head he will usually wag his tail. What will a goose do?

    Paul Lynde: Make him bark?

  • Another great quote I recall:

"Paul, the Rio Grande runs from Texas to Mexico. They call it the Rio Grande in Texas, what do they call it in Mexico?"

    Paul: "Washing machine"

  • I remember some--but not that one----he was soooo hallarious!

  • Paul Lynde classis quote:

Why did Hell's Angels wear leather.

    Answer: b/c Chiffon wrinkles

  • I remember that!

  • A testament to how iconic these performers were. I can see them so clearly as I listen to the audio. Thank you so much for sharing.

  • I feel the same way.. I too can recall how they looked. They were masters at timing.

  • I agree. I had completely forgotten that I had these clips.

  • This is so funny. I remember when I used to watch this and every episode was funny. Thanks for sharing, I very much appreciated it:-)

  • Thanks! I can't believe I found this recording. Glad you enjoyed it.

  • Great recording! But did I hear Jonathan Winters in addition to Paul and George?

  • Yes. It was -- WOW -- great voice recognition! I remember when I recorded it that I thought Winters was gonna be funny, and he layed an egg.
