I own the "V" variant of this amp - with two 10" Celestions. It's pretty versatile, and the tube sound can be pretty nasty... I've only ever used it (I've had it for about 15 years) by itself or with a DS1... but I'm getting a Boss Bass Overdrive (a la Buzz Osbourne of The Melvins) and some nasty-ass fuzz pedal, both of which are destined to be used in the recording studio primarily, but I'll still hook them to the Crate and it'll probably handle them quite well. GT80 (and V) FTW!
@ragejg Thanks for the comment. It's always fun to hear how others are using older, obscure equipment similar to yours. I've since bought a Line 6 Spider Valve, which I really like, but I still use the Crate for cleans, as a slave amp to the Line 6, and for playing bass (quietly, of course). My dad also plays bass and keeps joking that I should give him my Crate for Christmas because he likes how it sounds.
please for the viewers sake control your amp settings... and showing a riff without seing your left hand and berrely you right followed by 3/4 of you guitar under the table and out of the camera view its just stupid
In all honesty, I wasn't trying to put on a clinic. This was my first video. Initially, I was using YouTube as a way to capture ideas because at the time I didn't have another way to record. If some people like it, that great. If you guys hate it, that's fine too. I really don't care either way.
yah okay your right, now that I've listen to this again and I myself am in a better mood lol its not soo bad, you deff. captured 80s metal music. Theres no doubt there.
Hey there I currently have a line 6 flextone 3 which I got recently and am still tweaking. I would love to hear the GT80 by itself. I remember it had solid state and tube if I am correct, and would like to hear the differences between the 2 flavours without any pedals. Is this the GT80 with DSP?. Keep rockin dude!!!! I will be putting up some playing myself soon. Wish me luck.
Really?!? I don't know of too many people that are interested in the sound of an early-90's Crate. Is this a nostalgia thing for you? I will say it does have a pretty good clean sound at high volume. You're right - it has tube and solid state options on both the lead and rhythm channels, but mine doesn't have DSP. I will try to post a video going through the stock sounds of the GT80 Quadradrive. I bought the Line6 SpiderValve in April and like that pretty well.
I agree with you to a point, but I have a little bit different perspective on it. In my opinion, less than 10% of popular music at any given time will matter 10 years from now. Yes, there's a lot of crappy music now, but I think that bands like Foo Fighters and the Red Hot Chili Peppers have staying power. While I like a lot of mid-to-late 80's music, there was also a lot of crap like Trixter, Slaughter, and Bang Tango that were just awful despite getting a lot of airplay back in the day.
I don't remember for sure, but I wrote down some of my settings from last summer when I made the video. I'm guessing it was gain 4:00, deep full on, low 4:30, mid 9:00, high 12:00, level 8:00. I usually set the EQ on the amp about the same as on my pedal. The gain was probably at about 7/10 on my solid state clean channel. It sounded really cool in person. The camera didn't do it justice.
Meh. The tone absolutely sucked - far too much gain and treble, it just sounded brutally cold and solid-statish.
The riff itself was mediocre, and doesn't really sound 80s at all. Too heavy for a glam sound, and not fast or hard enough for something more thrashy. If anything, it sounds like a mid-90s grunge riff.
i just bought the guv'nor plus 2day and yea it sounds F@#KIN nasty!!!!!
yea you should just put the bass up just a tad enough to dampen only a bit of the treble and you should definetely HIT THAT CRU CRU CRRUUNCH..
im surprised that this damn pedal sounds AMAZING and VERY close to a tube like amp on a solid-state amp... playing this pedal on my jc-120 is a DREAM omg
Thank you much. Check out my first real effort at home recording at myspace dot com/devolution3210 (YouTube won't let me put web links into comments).
Thanks. Yes, the distortion is only from the Guv'nor but I think I had the gain maxed out, so don't expect much more juice than that out of it if you're considering buying one. I ran it straight into the solid state clean channel on my amp. I've had luck getting some insane distortion out of it by adding a small amount of gain from my Boss overdrive pedal in front of it, but it becomes unusable quickly as you add more and more gain.
Good ear! You're probably thinking of Midnight/Tornado by Skid Row. I just listened to it. The chords are different, but the rhythmic structure is similar enough that you could put the lyrics right over the top if it. There could be some unintended subliminal influence there. The instrumental ending of that song is so cool. It was one of the first metal riffs I learned back in the day.
I run into issues like that all the time.......I get a awesome riff going...then all of the sudden its a Dokken song or WASP or something else.....keep rock'n
I had never heard of that song or that band. I found a preview of the song online and it is kind of similar. I didn't steal it though. If anything, there may be elements of Judas Priest in there. I guess a lot of those band sort of have the same sound.
that main riff that you keep on playing is definitly speed of terror. sweat axe man, its good to see that people use les pauls, i have a gibson white les paul custom, plays like dream. how long have you been playing for?
I've been playing since I was 11 or so. This guitar is an Epiphone. It's a good guitar, but you're right - the Gibsons are truly awesome. I'm going to drop Burstbuckers into mine to make it sound closer to the real thing. Check out the song I recorded using this guitar on myspace dot com/devolution3210 (YouTube won't let me put web links into comments).
thats kool man, my first les paul was a les paul standard, it really is a good guitar. you should try dimarzio's paf pro in the neck & a super distortion in the bridge, those pick up will do anything you want, from classical to death metal & everything in between. ive been playing for 7 or 8 years now, ive been through hundreds of pickups, & these are 2 of the best well to me at least lol
I have a Super Distortion in the bridge of my Strat copy. It really is a great pickup, but the output is so high that I'm worried about losing some of the character of the LP. I like the classic look of the chrome pickup covers on the Les Paul too.
I believe the only difference between the standard and the plus is that the plus has a bookmatched flamed maple top while the standard has a plain maple top. They should sound the same. It's just a matter of which you think looks better. Good luck with your purchase and enjoy your new guitar. You won't be disappointed.
Maybe you're kidding, but I had a ridiculous amount of bass going when I recorded this. It was totally overwhelming the mic on the camera (listen for unintended distortion when I'm doing the palm muting). My master volume was way too loud and it sounds like sh*t because of it.
Thanks halfik. I had really bad camera position for this one. I'll try to watch that on future postings. I bought the guitar a few months ago. It's been great so far. It's well-built and plays great. The only thing I'm planning to do to it is replace the pickups with Gibson Burstbucker Pro's to give it a little bit more character.
