Not as fine as Dusty but Thelma has a nice voice...would have been better with arrangement more smooth...Dusty owns this one and got to see her do it live with Peter Allen (wrote this classic) at Los Angeles Greek Theater, a night to remember!
Until a few moments ago, the only person I had ever heard sing this touching song was the late great Carmen McRae. She recorded it on a LP (which I still have) entitled "I'm Coming Home Again" in 1978. That was over 30 years ago. None of the versions that I have listened to today touch her haunting version (not Dusty's, Rita's or Thelma's). And that's the truth!
Love Dusty and Rita... and was very pleasantly surprised to hear this version... the backing is bloody awful but the vocal is superb... get a different backing Thelma!!!
Love Dusty and Rita... and was very pleasantly surprised to hear this version... the backing is shite but the vocal is superb... get a different backing Thelma!!!
Please don't slagg Dusty down she don't deserve it MR ..all these Lady's sing it great and make it their own with their unique style ...and yes Miss jones does a great soulful version.
This is fabulous ! First heard it when studying in Australia and although the Rita Coolidge arrangement is great no one else can beat this vocal. Of course Peter Allen wrote and sang this song as well.
Great vocal but what is with the thunder clunky arrangement? Dusty's version is so heartbreaking it's hard for any others to compete but this is an excellent sadder but wiser grown -up girl take. Love Thelma's version of I SECOND THAT EMOTION. Very Dinah sounding.
This brings "forward" not "back" soooooo many wonderful and powerrful memories ... it occurred at the most innocent time in my life ... Nuff "RAS"peck for posting!
i have been looking to see who does this version!!! thank you for this post masterix6!!! i have heard like hundreds of covers of this song, but this one is the cherry on top of the cake!!!!
the song is great...she does a great job....but the best version I have heard is from An evening with Julie Andrews a 1977 concert in Japan....She was just breathtaking.
@DerrickSanchez No, Thelma Jones is a soul singer, a class act and while I think DS is a pretty decent singer, I don't really think she was ever anything to write home about.
Thelma Jones sing this song perfect...best version everrrrrrrr !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A little slower sung would have been better. It's too fast and maybe that's
why it didn't make it.Lovely Rita is the best.

It's all a matter of opinion, of course, but I never rated Dusty very highly. Thelma does a good job on what is only an average song.

This is one of my mother favorite song I know this song because she always play it
every time I hear it I think about my mother.........and yes she is Jamaican

i keep coming back to this...it's a gutsy, lived-in vocal that I enjoy...
but there's only one Dusty Springfield. And "Soul" doesnt necessarily mean riffs and runs and belting all over the place.
No one tops Dusty for pure emotion...

Sorry all, but Regine Velasquez does it best of all.

Scratch the Dinah, its Irma Thomas that she sounds like on this.

I think this song is being song by an artist Peter Allen would be very pleased with.
He wrote and preformed the song. This artist does a better job. I am sure he would be the frst to tell her.

I like her voice and her reading of the song but i do not like the arrangement of the music they lyric is more powerful set to a lower pace IMHO
somethingj 2 years ago
Yes the lyrics are more powerful, set to music at a slower pace. This woman CAN sure sing. I like the version by Dusty.
