Joey and Pacey story didn't like each other that much in Seasons 1&2. They were friends and care about each other in a friendly way but nothing romantic between them only arguing and teasing each other. In season 3, you see their feelings for each other evolve slowly but surely and these feelings caught them off guard. They did try to harbour their feelings for each other but in vain. As Grams said "Love is the hardest of woods. Takes a long, long time to heat up, but it does"

@luvontthinko11, If you ever watch the entire episode, Joey gives Dawson a gift from her trip with Pacey and Dawson tells her it's going to take a lot more then just a gift to get back what they had and he didn't even know if he wanted it back anyway. lol So, he doesn't exacly let Joey off the hook but he doesn't even want Pacey to show up with Joey where they are hanging out which proves that Dawson blames Pacey a hell of a lot more then he does Joey. lol :)

@markandlexie4ever Soulmates aren't always in your life forever. Some people say that we get more than one in this world. They come into your life for a purpose. I actually think that the word "soulmate" was thrown around way too much between DJ on that show. Jack and Jen were more deserving of the word than Dawson and Joey.

I think it's because they spent most of their summer with Dawson while Pacey and Joey were sailing which hurt Dawson's feelings. So, I think it was like a loyalty thing. If Dawson hated Pacey, the rest of them had to hate him too. I think it's pretty pathedic though. Pacey didn't do anything to hurt them so he has nothing to feel giulty for. lol ;)

@laramilbes89 he did !! he was mad at jeoy too... at 3x20 he tells her she has to chose between him and pacey and she chose dawson..then in the season finale he tells her she is free and can do whatever she wants....but pacey on the other hand...was never honest with him and he knew exactly how he felt about her and still decied to go after her...HE WAS HIS BEST FRIEND!!!

@markandlexie4ever ...and Joey was single. Dawson rejected Joey,and then Joey fell for Pacey,so Dawson suddenly decides he wants her back. Pacey and Joey did nothing wrong. You can't help who you fall for. dawson had no right to make her choose, nor did he have any right to says she was "free" and to "go before he takes it all back" he didn't OWN her. Pacey didn't get with Joey to hurt Dawson,or get revenge for something or get one over on him-he simply fell in love,as did Joey.

@Paceywasperfect I couldnt agree with you more:You can't help who you fall for. but you can totally decide if you are honest or not with your best friend (your soulmate as joey called dawson) he make her choose 'cause at the time he was upset and hurt, he didnt make pacey to choose but joey 'cause what they had was beyond friendship beyond lovers!! it would never end! but at the end dawson undesrtood "You can't help who you fall for", but you would have to expirience what they had to understand

Just because she wanted to be with Pacey(who truly,truly loved her,as seen by his behaviour) doesn't mean her friendship had with Dawson had to end. I know who my soulmate is,and i just want him to be happy,as heartbreaking as it is. I let him go. They tried to tell him, but it's very hard when you know you'll have to hurt someone. Take care.

@markandlexie4ever People are either in committed relationships or they are not. Those who are unattached are free to love whoever they want. What this means is that if you have an ex, you will have to deal with the likelihood that they will go on with someone else, and if you have feelings for them, that will suck, no matter how or when you find out. Ultimately, the issue is how to deal with the loss. Anything else is a distraction from that reality.

What is the ultimate point to this rumination? That Joey and Pacey are bad people and/or that they should remain apart because Dawson was hurt (Seems to me he made them suffer considerably as well)?

@markandlexie4ever What is vexing about debating the ethics of this situation is that we are talking about a situation that would have never occurred between adults. No adult male, who isn't cognitively impaired, would ever ask his best friend to keep on an eye on his ex. It is pretty clear to me that it never occurred to Dawson, Joey, or Pacey that something could happen between Joey and Pacey. Once it happened, none of them were prepared to deal with it, so they did what teenagers do.

@markandlexie4ever Friendship is not overrated. People don't value it like they should. When I think of this situation from Dawson's point of view, I totally get his feeling betrayed. That said, I would not expect my friends to sacrifice their happiness out of loyalty to me. My pride would be hurt, and I would probably want to take a break from them. I would like to think that we would find our way back to our friendship in time. That seems to be what happened here.

@markandlexie4ever I find it interesting that this storyline evoked such strong reactions because I have never seen this specific situation in fact or fiction before. The chances that anyone in the real world would encounter this situation are remote.

If faced with a similar situation, you would choose friendship over love, and that is a valid choice. I am not convinced that choosing love over friendship is necessarily wrong. Either choice would cause someone to suffer.

At that point he was the only security she had.She even said to him that if there was a chance he'd forgive her and still be her FRIEND then she may have chosen differently in the first place .When she was dancing with Dawson at the wedding she was crying She was so unhappy!!

Pacey knew that hurting Dawson was wrong,but Pacey simply couldn't be without Joey, come what may. He would have forsaked anything for her.
