@tomrzon well, Romans vs. Napoleon is equally unrealistic as a stone age culture fighting against an iron age culture, yet the latter scenario was possible in AoE 1, although there is over 2500 years gap between them.

I'd like to think that you start out in Stone Age, and can just keep advancing and advancing and advancing until you can recruit line infantry and steam ships etc. Of course, you'll most likely not be able to achieve this in 1 casual random map game, but still...
