If you like this you should check out "lightining in a bottle" dvd documentary on blues history. In the bonus features Mos Def does a live performance of this song with Keb Mo on guitar and plenty of other talented blues musicians. It is truly incredible
Suggie Otis is the guitarist and is an unknown prodigy from the 70's. He disappeared for a while for his own reasons. He could have been one of the best known blues/funk guitarist ever.
@omga14 Shuggie Otis, was approached by The Rolling stones to join them on their world tour, he also refused to work with Quincy Jones to make his Album back in the 70's. He without a shadow of a doubt would have been a very big name, even to this day
@ghadfers Knew about Quincy Jones deal but no the Rolling Stones. I read that he was approached by alot of people to do work on albums or go on tours but just didn't want to. Crazy to think how many more brilliant people have gone under the radar. And to think that he would come out and do something with Mos Def speaks alot about Mos' talent.
@omga14 But i repsect him more the same for declining, as it shows he was never in it for the money, and more the music aspect of it, which is great. And when you think of the amount of talent thats just gone under the radar, i mean, could we of shuggie had another hendrix, everyone remembers him, maybe he would of been in the same league.
@ghadfers Much in agreement there. Alot of people would never know who I was talking about if I mentioned him. Funny thing is that alot of famous guitarists know who he is and respect him. Buddy asked who was on the guitar and when I told him he actually said "New cats are getting better", lol. I had to explain somethings to him of course. He's on a search for Suggie stuff now.
This ain't no sample. Check the movie 'lightnin' in a bottle' 2004, its pure blues history. I love me some ac/dc, They don't come close to sounding this 'MISSISSIPPI', ever.
I love Mos Def! Did you see him on "16 Blocks" with Bruce Willis! He's a great actor too! Love the Guitar in this song...from beginning to end? Who's on Guitar?
it's just a 12bar blues many tunes have been written in this format the difference is just the way it was played at the time i don't think there's any sample involved in this tune all the instruments were played live buddy :-)
@Roscoemann71 the guitarist in this track is Shuggie Otis, a 70s musician whose music is sampled in a lot of rap. The main guitarist on the rest of the album is Dr. Know from the legendary punk band Bad Brains.
Well... seems like Shuggie hasn't lost a step. Went on a trip to find him and stood behind his brother at a coffee shop unknowingly. Great tune, I am definitely going to get this album

U win.
I've checked out the The New Danger's info about production and that stuff. Well, me and the rest of the poeple might just enjoy the blues.
Again, thanks for upload this on youtube. Free music for the youth. And not that youth.
