This movie is meant to be propaganda and was produced during the cold war era, but for some reason my dad got a hold of a video copy of this on vhs and I watched it when I was a kid for the battle scenes

This was not made during the Cold War. It was made before it in 1938. At that time Hitler was flexing his muscles in Europe and Stalin thought of Hitler as a potential ally and partner in running all of Europe one day. This film was probably made to show Hitler that Russia was germany's equal. It was not a warning about the German invasion that came in 1940. That invasion was a total shock to Stalin who thought of Hitler as a friend even though the two had never met.

What in this movie has communist undertones? This movie was actually pulled out of theaters by Stalin when it was released and only re-released after the Nazi invasian. Sergei Eisenstein was Stalin's favorite director and was counted on to tout the party line. Stalin and Hitler signed a non-agression pact less than a year after this film was made. The film was probably banned before the agreement was signed. Stalin had trusted Hitler - that is - until Hitler invaded the Soviet Union 1 year after the agreement. They were allies in that they agreed to split Poland between themselves.
