@SARSquid79 This might be a dumb question, but does any part of that system also filter the water? Say if you ran out of water in your container could you fill it up with lake or creek water and use it? Thanks
No updates on your system? Can you do another video on it after your uses? Can you include what you like and don't like about it? I want to do this myself and need more info. Thanks again.
Well does this system work in the field like it should? And when you recirculate the water back does it take less heat to reheat the system? And how does everything hold up after multiple uses?
@PtotheRum The system works great in the field. There's nothing like a hot shower after a few grimey days at camp.
After the system runs for about minutes, you can pretty much turn the heat all the way off, as most or all of your water supply will have already gone through the heater at least once - if using a water container like the one in the video.
Everything is holding up very well. The cedar shower deck is the 1 component that seems to be wearing out.
@PtotheRUM The only issue I've found is that the batteries for the HWOD do not like the cold! If you are camping anywhere where the temperatures fall below 50*, I would highly suggest bringing the batteries into the tent with you to keep them warm.
@SARSquid79 I would run the wood fed system as an open system, it creates instant hot water just as this does, I would use it for my RV in where your temps are controlled by cold and hot water adjusted to your desire.
There are some safety features that I am not willing to discuss that I will employ in controlling max temps so they do not become dangerous.
@SARSquid79 Take a look at the video bs4872 made on his instant water heater that is fueled by wood, these would be great for off grid living applications.
I like your shower set up in how you made a closed loop that you can bypass.
Great job! The water return is particularly clever! Good job on the vid also! Thanx! I have an old RV I'm restoring which has a shower, but I don't trust the old propane water heater. This might be a good alternative solution. The only thing I dislike on your Coleman is the rechargeable battery power. It would be nice if it had the option of running it on a DC power pack. I hate anything that uses a proprietary battery system. Thanx again, & kudos to U, sir! :-)
@thespy1 I should have included a picture with this video. The whole system as it's featured in my demonstration actually breaks down and compacts into a surprisingly small package. Once everything is broken down, the water container is the biggest, bulkiest part of the whole system.
If you're going camping with small children, this is a great way to keep them clean and conserve water. Also, washing dishes would be easier with hot water, although I usually warm a pot on the fire, it just takes longer. Now, is there room in that tent for a sink and potty??LOL
This is an awesome idea. I was considering the Camp Chef Triton, but then realized that you need a pump and so forth. Even though this may not be as powerful, it is much more portable than the Camp Chef for my needs.
What size hose did you use for your modification? Can you plug the Coleman into a socket while the battery is in? What are the pump powering options other than the battery? And finally, How long does the battery last (all 40 hours the propane tank uses)?
The return water plumbing is very cool but wouldn't it be much simpler to just position the Coleman water system near the door so you could just reach outside and turn it on & off?
I like what you did I really do I would use an icechest with wheels and telescopic handle for water container. Plumb through the lid then insulate the water lines. Academy selling that coleman clearance $99.
@mikewash93030 : System still works great. The only issue that I've run into is the battery on the Coleman HWOD system. In the cold, the batteries will die overnight even if fully charged. When camping in the cold, I have to remember to bring the batteries into the tent with me at night.
This is the best camping demo I have seen yet. Great job. I purchased the 12 ft hose, ordered the 3 way valve. I need to purchase the two 3/8" bar fittings. where do they go?
I have my hot water unit already but needed to find a way to turn the water on and off without it getting too hot by bending the water line. You solved my issue.
@kimmcguirereid : 1 Barb fitting is the 90* fitting at the shower head & 3-way valve. Without the 90* fitting, the hose will kink when the water gets hot. I used the 2nd (straight) fitting at the end of the return hose to securely plug the return line into the water container.
your idea is too much for camping its got too many fittings & its bulky better result with 12 volt submersible pump with shower head just drop in 20 litre container with warm water its got better pressure & can have a longer shower cheers
@wally1166 It looks big and bulky when all set up. It's definitely not at all feasible for backpacking or anything like that. But for car camping or trailer camping, or 4wheeling it works really well. I chose all the gear carefully, and it actually all packs down to a pretty small, portable package. The largest part of this whole system (when packed) is the water container.
This adapter to return the water is a really great idea. You should try to sell it to coleman, or maybe make your own and sell them- Heck Id buy one :)
Great idea i tried some of your idea except i use an 18 gal storage container i use to transport some of my camping gear in my truck and i find its great for filling up with water. I used to use the hose adapter but your return valve idea was a thought i had before i seen your video but you helped me make it reality thanks.
Hi i went for the zodi HP with the sunncamp shower tent also i borrowed your return valve idea thanks. I found the coleman had allot of issues (cost with all parts to ship to uk and also battery life) for a UK consumer so went with a system that works from 12v and also batteries. It also allows a higher temp output as the weather in the UK sucks. What do you think? I'm still waiting on delivery of the zodi, but it will be up and running soon
one problem with your setup is that he recirculated water raises the water temperature, so that in pretty short order the water's going to be too hot.
@kcmdog I actually find that to be a fuel saver. If I let the system heat up, run and recirculate for a few minutes, I can kill the heater, and still have warm/hot water.
@kcmdog I actually find that to be a fuel saver. Once the system is running and recirculating for a few minutes, you can kill the heater, and still have hot/warm water.
That was a great idea to recycle the water back to the water container !! I will try this as you have it as it looks like what I would like to use out at my private campsite
Thanks for your video, i had so much problems with my unit that i almost gave up on it but after the 3rd one and with much hair pulling, i finally got a good unit that works when i need it and i have modified it similar to yours. the tap circulation makes it so much easier and i dont need my partner helping me to set it up, nice to have a hot shower at the end of day that for sure. thanks for sharing.
I have been shopping around for different portable showers. I need one for camping and Beach going activities. I would like it to be self sustaining. I really enjoyed your video. I could not get the information that I needed to compare portable showers on websites. Your video was more informative and will help me to make a better decision..
This is awesome! Nothing ruins my camping experience more than being sweaty dusty nasty and not being able to get clean! My hubby will bathe in snowmelt but NOT ME -- poor guy has to boil water for me and stand me on a milkcrate and dump water on me. OK for the summer but in the Medicine Bow Range in late September it's NOT FUN. I CANT WAIT TO SHOW HIM YOUR VIDEO! Thank you thank you thank you for sharing and for your creative, innovative mind!!!!! You're a genius!!!
@FlyHiawatha Absolutely! ...but a LARGE percentage of my camping is in areas where there is no supply of fresh water. I always have to pack my water in. The water pump has a screen on it to keep debris out of the system if you use the HWOD right out of a stream or river.
Man, this is pretty portable. It could be broken down and stowed away in the back of my 'burb for those unplanned/extended stay situations. As far as potability of the water how do you pre-filter or purify it? Just asking, it would be bad to clog or damage your hot H2O machine. Thinking of this or the heat exchager type on a generator or vehicle.
@mountainman28713 Yes - this system as I have it set up in the video collapses down into a surprisingly compact package! As I stated before, MOST of the time, in the areas I camp, I have to pack in water - so it's already potable. Otherwise I would have to use my MSR water purification system to purify it. The pump and pick-up hose has a pretty fine screen for pre-filtering the water as it comes in to keep debris out of the system.
We have that exact container and were considering buying this system. THANK YOU for the demo video and EXCELLENT idea on the little valve. Never thought of the cedar decking.
@SARSquid79 Okay cool, Everything about the enclosure's good but would've been better if they raised the canopy at least an inch and a half off the ground co'z it'll be disgusting after a lot of use and to pack right?
