  • 4:38 - if I were a bird, I would just fly through that crap with my mouth open xD

  • i like to fart

  • i have too malawi fishs.like it

  • me too

  • yahoo also brought me here

  • yahoo brought me here :D

  • attenborough sounded a lot better

  • What is this a snippet from? its really interesting!

  • @bcdrummer

I think it might be from the Planet Earth series?

  • What kind of cichlid is that blue and yellow one they show making the nest and moving the shell????

  • @NorthwoodTimberwolve Dont quote me on this but I have seen these guys in the aquarium shops and I thought I remember reading thier name tag as a type of Peacock. However according to Axelrod's mini atlas of freshwater aquarium fishes they are called Aulonocara. These names could be referring to the same fish. I dont know. I bought one of these before and they cost a little bit more than the majority of Malawi fish. You CAN get them in pet shops.

  • Single ancestor... then how did it breed?!

  • @MriBackup I believe when they said single ancester they were referring not to an individual fish but an individual species that mutated over time. That goes without saying but perhaps you were joking. If so, ignore my comment.

  • @SCORNDOGGMELACH Nah i was serious, thanks.

  • I want to Grab These Cichlids, and Throw them in the Amazon river, or Some place Warm, So that if something happens to Lake Malawi, these species will be Free somewhere Else.

  • @DgosFinnest - You do that and you might screw up the Amazon river. Introducing foreign species can have devastating effects on local wildlife. I appreciate your concern for those fish though.

  • @bitbernie Well thats a risk I would be willing to take. Balances are disturbed every day. And messed up things happen everyday. I dont even know if They would survive, in the Amazon, the ph levels are different. Not to mention there are much bigger fish in The amazon River. I would much rather take a risk, and throw them down the amazon than to see them go extinct forever. Wouldn't you ?

  • @DgosFinnest Unfortunately the water conditions in Malawi are hard, alkaline and saline while in the Amazon, the waters are more acidic and soft. The fact that both of these different types can survive in our tap water is because our tap water sits somewhere in the middle of these two extremes. Im not sure your plan would work. But its the thought that counts. Fortunately Lake Malawi cichlids breed like crazy in captivity as well. They are tuff as nails. Atleast we can depend on that.

  • @SCORNDOGGMELACH Yes Sir, I am Aware of the pH Levels. But Something I know about African Cichlids, is that they are good at adapting. I m sure, with time, they would easily adapt to the lower pH Levels. African cichlids after all, are Survivors. And like you said my Friend They are tough as nails.

  • @DgosFinnest Hmmmm. You may be on to something there. I was not looking at it like that. Perhaps the stronger strains would survive the prolonged duration of soft acidic water conditions, but then again we cant dismiss the devastating effects of the introduction of a foreign species. Greater minds than ours have devastated established species with such bunglings. You got my wheels spinning now. There is also the question of Algae production with a scarcity of phosphorus and calcium in Amazonia.

  • @SCORNDOGGMELACH Well Yeah, But Like I told someone else. The african Governments in charge of the Lakes, Don't really care about protecting African cichlids. All they really care about is making money off those fish. So they are allowing people to pollute the Lake, and to over fish in it. Just to make a buck!! I would take a risk, of upsetting the balance in the amazon, to ensure the survival of African cichlids. It would be a risk i would be willing to take, should somethng hapn 2 dos lakes

  • @DgosFinnest Well lets be realistic. The export of those fish isnt going to be stopping any time soon. And as far as mans greed goes, well nothing new. But when it comes to concern for tropical fish populations the real focus shoulsd be on the marine sprecies. Its really quite simple. If you cant breed a fish successfully in captivity it shouldnt be removed. But as for Malawi cichlids they breed in abundance when domesticated. Even if the last fish was removed from the lake (contabove)

  • @DgosFinnest (which would never happen) domesticated fish could be dumped right back in with no ill effects. Malawi cichlids will always be around and continue to mutate into different types all the time. However I am concerned about this issue of polution. Could you tell me more about it. Were you referring to boating emmissions? Forgive me but this upsetting the balance could mean extinction for less hearty species than our bulletproof friends. Maybe domestication will be the savior suitable.

  • @DgosFinnest Whoops. Please excuse my clumsy keyboarding . Should have proof read. (chuckle)

  • Hmm.....I'll trade you lake Ontario :/

  • Why has David Attenborough's voice been replaced with a females?

  • malawi africa or do u mean who put it there

  • I have hitch-hiked from Cape Town twice to Lake Malawi and found it incredibly beautiful and amazing . Lovely to swim after such a hot and sweating trek . Beautiful fish and unique too.

The third attempt got me deported out of Zambia , at Kariba dam ,as ""a military spy for SA "" because I only had 1 bottle of brandy instead of 2 .( corrupt Zambian Customs 1988) In those days they were so poor that one couldnt even buy a pack of smokes in the capital city . Thanks to President Kaunda .

  • awsome !

  • Beautiful video ! Thanks for sharing !

  • Is this footage/short doco from Home...that huge doco available on YouTube?

  • fucking coward

  • how much would it cost for a trip there and to catch fish

  • not sure, but i read somewhere that catching fish has been made illegal for most parts of the lakes, but there aren't many people policing it. would be pretty cool to go diving there.

  • depends on where you are flying from.

  • Notice the SMOOTH ROCKS!!! NOT SHARP ROCKS!!! STOP PUTING SHARP ROCKS IN YOUR TANKS KIDS!!

  • so pretty:D i <3 cichlids!!

  • ITS A SHAME THAT THE LOCALS, AND GREEDY POLITICIANS ARE ALLOWING FOREIGNERS TO REMOVE RARE FISH FROM LAKE MALAWI. Most of these people claim they are conservationists!

  • I agree it is sick. Every one should only buy tank bred fish. It is a moral imperative. :)

  • @TheBrassHole I only buy cichlids that are tank bred! I have been to Malawi and LOVE the wild ones but they belong their and ONLY their.

  • @TheBrassHole Actually the truth is we shouldnt use sweeping generalizations as a true discernment of the problem. What foolishness it is to apply human concepts like morality in relating to the wild. Morality? Are you kidding. If you were 2 " in length these little beauties would show you what they think of morality, but I digress. If you want to express concern consider the Marine tropicals. Though the most beautiful and coveted not too many can be bred successfully in captivity.(contabove)

  • @TheBrassHole And that, my friend seems to me to be what should logically be the determining factor. The second attempt to solving this issue would be a requirement of education for those wishing to possess such fish. Most people I know who have approached the hobby fail to keep goldfish alive let alone some of the more exotic species. Education to me seems the medicine most effective. But only in a perfect world. And why do I suggest this over the best alternative of simply leaving(contabove)

  • @TheBrassHole them alone? Because both you and I know thats not going to happen. Expressing concern is not the same as providing suggestions for solutions. And as for these Malawi cichlids you need not worry. They breed quite well in captivity and in some of the harshest conditions, abundantly. Extinction? I think not. And even if Malawi was suddenly robbed of its last fish (never happen) the very fish we breed in captivity could be dumped straigt back into the Lake with no ill effects.

  • @jondobigballs Rare...haha your joking right....compare the level of fishing in the lake to that of the ocean and the density of fish in each and you will see that there is no danger of overfishing in the lake. However there are some species that are endangered and as you say should be protected (though they will be bred in the aquarium and will at least not go extinct). I have also heard of some projects where endangered fish are taken, bred, and put back into the lake to help population.

  • @jondobigballs Strange you believe that the export of fish for aquariums is the threat to the species of Lake Malawi, Lake Victoria's lost over 400 species due to the introduction of the Nile Perch as a food fish and pollution. The Aquarium enthusiasts have managed to preserve many species now extinct in the wild due to captive breeding of Victorian species. The threat to Malawi stock is likely to occur from mining, pollution and overfishing for food, not the aquarium trade.

  • @jondobigballs The small quantities that are collected for hobbyists have no real impact on local populations. The real problem is the indiscriminate netting of these fish (most are wasted as "by catch" Mbunas are inedible) Selective breeding by hobbyists actually provides an "ark" if you will. It also provides jobs for locals. It's a win win situationin my opinion.

  • @jondobigballs Actually a rule of thumb should be applied. If you cant breed a fish in captivity successfully they should not be removed. We should be more concerned with marine fish populations. Virtually all Malawi cichlids will breed in captivity, and in abundance. You need not worry about them ever being threatoned. You can bank on that and so can the importers. (chuckle)

  • @jondobigballs Rare? LOL

  • This is definitely the footage from Planet Earth!! Like pretty sure exactly the same, the only thing missing is David Attenborough's sweet voice! How does that work??

  • yea planet earth brought out two versions.. one with david attenborough and one with Sigourney Weaver's..

  • is the footage different as well?

i have the one with David A.

and this scene does not come out there.

    ?

  • I want to dive there so bad.

  • isnt this footage from planet earth?

  • KWATHU

  • Wild cichlids make me want to cry at how beautiful they are

  • That place must be amazing

  • This is my country!!!! Im so proud of the beauty

  • its not south africa? its in malawi or the border of

  • ...I am aware where lake Malawi is.. I am Malawian! And Mbunas4ever it is Amazing! You should go visit there if you get the chance.

  • have you been to likoma island? it looks so gorgeous, it's hard to believe it's a lake. there's crazy visibility underwater.

  • im only assuming your from south africa because it says so in your profile, so sorry

  • That's all they showed about lake malawi in the whole 11 episode, 40min ea of Planet Earth (Discovery) documentary. It's in the "Fresh Water" episode.

  • yea i saw the whole episode on i think animal planet a while bacc

  • @MalawiFan11

This video was on a BBC doco, exact same video but with Richard Attenborough's Voice

  • @MalawiFan11 I bought that whole series on Blu Ray because I saw the Cichlid stuff on Discovery Channel!

  • Check out my tank!

  • Is that Sigourney Weaver's voice? sounds allot like her, if so.. I have allot more respect for the fine actress she is. :)

  • 2:04... ahhh! you forgot me!

  • I hate those fish that eat the chiclida If I go to lake malawi I would Have a huge fish fry and eat those losers

  • Absolutely fantastic, 5 stars ^_^

  • pretty cool

  • this video is really cool u must watch it .

  • I want to go there and take hundreds of cichlids back with me for my tank.

  • You can take some back for free through the Stuart Grant company (Red Zebra Tours)...as many as you can fit in a shipping box.

  • i like the 1:45 bit where the babies go in the mummas mouth :D

  • love 0:50 seconds shot

  • If there was a finding nemo on australia, i would like a finding [something] at Lake Malawi!!

  • me too. that would kick ass...although ellen dgeneris gotta go

  • ...Finding Esther? (Metriaclima estherae...google it)

  • lol, good one. It looks like it hides like Nemo. XD

  • Actually it's the WTO, WHO, and UN that's causing all of that. For example the WTO and WHO introduced Tilapia and other food fishes into Lake Victoria...now more than 90% of the endemic cichlids there are extinct....luckily a few survived in the hobby thanks to dedicated breeders...

  • fuck you actually malawi doesnt cause pollution and waste gasses where over here in england it isso you stfu wtfyourdumb

  • ...wtf are you talking about? I hope you aren't talking about me and what I said... What I said I was talking about Lake Victoria. Luckily Lake Tanganyika and Lake Malawi are still for the most part and preserved. Pollution isn't a problem at Malawi or Tanganyika, it's over fishing in certain areas that's causing some species to disappear but for the most part the cichlids are still fluorishing there... So chill the hell out moron... I actually KNOW what I am talking about...unlike you...

  • i do know what im talking about dont say the n word u stupid idiot

  • ...I didn't...

  • r u wtfyourdumb

  • ok, you are my 21 year old daughters size...my bad

  • oops sorry, I meant , you are my 12 year old daughters size...my bad

  • not you i mean that guy wtfyourdumb

  • i will dive there 1day. It is a must!

  • i was born and grew up in Malawi the scuba diving in the lake is great with all the different fish.

  • whats the title of this movie? anybody please?

  • I think it Planet Earth from discovery channel. I could be wrong but Im pretty positive.

  • It's the freshwater video from that series Planet Earth.

BTW if anyone didn't realize it, at 1:45 she says HE is holding the fish in the mouth...actually that is a female and appears to be Tyrannochromis macrostoma...a very beautiful cichlid when the males are fully colored...they're also piscivores...

  • Africa :)

  • ur gay

  • That was a very nice video! Lovely!
