I never really thought about it but I guess the air column above the helicopter rotor is like a vacuum sucking in all the air and blowing in downward. That's why it looks like the bird got sucked into the rotor.
It's actually a Westland Mk 43B Sea-King, not a Sikorsky, operated by the Royal Norwegian Air Force. On the 18. of june 2008 a bag was sucked into the engine. The engine flamed out, and the Helo had to make an emergency landing on the dock, prior to having an engine change. No one was hurt. There is an "ice-guard" in front of the intake, but no mesh screen, as this will mess up the air flow to the engine...

It fell from 3 meters high. So it was unable to take off and have to stay on the harbour to be repaired. No apparent damage
