For the benefit of the uneducated; Newfoundland was a British colony until 1949, then it became Canadian.

@SantaFe19484 Newfoundland was an English and later British colony that lasted from 1583-1907. It had gained self government as a colony in 1855. From 1907-1949 it was its own Dominion in the British Empire. But in 1934 it gave up self government due to scandals and gave control back to the United Kingdom until it entered Canadian confederation in 1949.
