big respect for his genius work in the JOY DIVISON, he dared to take his life to the sheer limits in order to stretch his mind. A complete genius with exceptional confidence.
Theres a video of him on the net somewhere where hes walking you through the mixing desk, and all the other pieces of gear in the studio, that stuff was knowledge of the chosen few back then and he was part of that, the guy knew what he was doing, no doubt about it.
Call him what you like but he had an ear and he was the glue.
Easy for nodobies to have a pop at him, but at the end of the day its his name thats all over the string of highly successful and arty recordings he put together.
One of the big questions that will forever be unanswered is 'What would of happened if Martin had been given his budget and got his Fairlight?' Hmmm.... I wish 'Temptation' had of been produced by Martin as it would of been the best version that we've never heard.
what's with studio geniuses and handguns (i.e. Hannett + Spector)...i stand in awe of the work, but could do without the weapons. think i have the answer...FEAR.
@kjstarscream even in that era he still had his genius, he was very hard on the booze at that time but he was still very aware about production. I worked on an unamed project funded by martin at strawberry studios, have no idea what happened to the masters.
he got me to do his synth stuff so no genius ,he spent all day drinkinking speaking brew with 2 prostitutes keeping him awake while i sorted his synth out.the guy was a drudged up nobody .if you think diffident then you were not there.
I can so understand his dislike for Tony Wilson. Tony was the high priest of utter BullSh*t. He always was. He was basically a suit trying to be the 'hip' person of whatever was the trend at the time. Martin really got a lousy deal when he teamed up with Factory Records. No wonder he died in 1991, depressed, grossly obese and totally letdown. It was a sad demise for a genius.
every genius falls in the end i think every genius in whatever field has a destuctive side included in their make up .i think if their is a god/higher power hes basically sayin u can have this amazing special gift that normal men dnt have but to compensate for it u gota have a destructive tendancies...
i remember a few weeks in strawberry studios doing some sessions on keys for Martin...he was a genius.. he directed most of the sessions from underneath the mixing console..when we could coax him out of the toilet.. we went to pick him up on way to studio one night and my car stolen while we were in his house...unfortunately my other band member,s hand made custom Gordy guitar was in the boot...he was crying like a baby..He ended up buying a very nice old blue Strat from Martin..
It looks like he was having a good laugh with Morris and isn't how he has been portrayed in films. Nutter but a good laugh

@tomandsamuel Simple: Tony Wilson (the talking head), Rob Gretton (the hitman), and some groups (Joy Division, A Certain Ratio, et al).

The absolute god of all modern musical producers imho. So sad drugs and alcohol destroyed such a wonderful talent.

I know this is about Martin Hannett, but as so often, its Stephen Morris who steals the show..."its either that or the RSPCA..." Great bloke.

I suppose Martin turn Ian into loving Krafwerk, and Joy Division into using synths.
