“exposes the controversy” You mean pretend there is a controversy. In this case, there isn't one. This is an interesting story on its own. There is no need to over-dramatize it. But when news programs get desperate for ratings, they start using the word “controversy” in an attempt to create interest and get more people to watch watch their news show. Have you ever noticed that?
I have worked with many Filipino nurses in the USA. Our hospital has never had any problem with any of them. The fact that they are here would be a total non-issue except for the fact that they are such awesome workers. That is what makes them noticeable. I don't know how our hospital could keep going without them.
Anyone recall an issue in NY or NJ where the Filipino nurses felt they were being exploited by the hospital and when they stayed home to protest inhumane long hours they were threatened with arrest for abandoning their patients?
my reaction to Dr. Caplan...nurses foreign or local are trained to do TO or VO read back, so stop worrying. But if that's really your concern , just FYI, there are tons of erroneous orders carried out by nurses from doctors, dispensed by pharmacist that cost approximately 3000 lives each year and this error i guarantee you are not from foreign workers.
Well, I would say that there are no better nurses in the world than the Filipino nurses. We are not only highly qualified, highly skilled but we give care with compassion.. That's what lacking with the rest of them, compassion. And with the communication issue, I don't think that it's an issue anymore as we are more assertive and inquisitive than or counterparts anywhere in the world. @ericmanipon. your comment is not helpful at all. You just stepped on someone's toe. If you wanna work here, be humble. People are against foreign workers not just because of high unemployment but also because of your "exceptionalism" attitude.
Put yourself on white, hispanic or african american's shoes. How would you feel if you hear that Filipinos are better than the rest?
HUMBLE is the keyword when you are not in your own land.
I'm a clinical nurse specialist in UK, I never had problem communicating to my patients, I have dealt with my patients' complex issues and had to communicate to other disciplines as the main part of my role and never had any problem. Is it proven that medical errors and malpractice is due to language barriers? I am proud to say that my fellow nurses working either in US, UK or anywhere around the world are highly regarded by their colleagues and institutions for their professionalism and compet
Is any other Filipino offended by this report? They report as if hospitals hiring Filipino nurses is a totally new thing when it's been around for a LONG time. Communication issues...Filipinos grow up with the English language as well...Taglish anyone? Ugh, I'm so irritated with this report...
just a thought...what do you think will happen if Filipino nurses wont take employment anywhere else in the US, UK, Middle East? what will happen to their healthcare systems?
Redneck, indeed! Totally absurd! We Filipino RNs are unspeakably smarter than 'em! I worked in one of the TOP hospital for heart & cardiac surgery... Nonetheless, Guys... No worries, cause still, were one of the best RN in the whole wide world! No one can refute that! Kudos to all Filipino RN!!!!
i dont want to be bias when it comes to this topic just because im a Filipino Nurse! We Filipinos take Nursing Curriculum SERIOUSLY...
Before the school release us to take Nursing Exam either local or foreign such as NCLEX we had a hands on experience in almost everything! OR, OB-GYN, ER, Psych.. you think Nursing school here in US offers this! I dont think soo! US grad nurses dont even know how to aspirate medication from a vial.
I agree that we have difficulty in expressing ourselves with the use of English language, but we make sure to it that we are in the same page with our client! I rather trust foreign nurses with lots of skill and knowledge than a nurse who is good in English language! Among Filipino nurses and US grad nurses who had the most error made?

understand both sides,as strict as they are all applicants esp. foreign ones go thru the eye of the needle before they are hired, communication is usually a big prob. not just in nursing.....so what is the solution to these nursing shortage so we do not have to hire foreign nurses......everyone in the US has an opportunity to become a nurse I challenge u to become one it is not an easy one. and in every race there is always a bad seed .thank u for the opportunity to say my opinion
A good, excellent or best nurse doesn't have anything to do of what nationality you are. It is a personal choice. We can not say that Filipino nurses are the best in the world because this is not really true. There are good and bad Filipino nurses too just like any other race. I am a Filipino nurse and I am proud to be one.I take pride of the care that I provide to my clients. It's the care that you give/ provide to your clients that matters the most. Just be proud to be a nurse!!!!
@ejnjlj03 hi po.can i ask a question?as a filipino nurse is it hard to apply in the US hospital if u're graduated n the philippines?anu pong requirements nila?
@ejnjlj03 I have never met a filipino nurse that disrespected me,i wish that all of them would be filipino's.they r good to patients and they would never ask u if u can afford to stay in the fucking hospital, i had bad experience with fucking "American" like me.On behalf of my parents.
@totoynani143 not really. they only foucus on alert patients or patients with familys. othet than that you dont exist to filipinos nurses. they discriminate on Americans nurses and keep wages low and work demand high. they creat such a hard work that if they treated you "good" that means they treated many bad. your parents are lucky they had you to watch out for them. Or yoiu are lucky that you were alert during care. if not they just move on. its all a front......
Johns Hopkins will not become the No. 1 hospital in the US and probably in the world if the large number of their Filipino registered nurses are incompetent.
The US liberal media is just creating a negative public opinion against Filipino nurses. Maybe some locals feel threatened, and in some extent that's understandable but that can be addressed appropriately. But the point is why is the media singling out the Filipino nurses? Even to the point that they will imply that rising medical malpractice was due to miscarried doctors' instructions!! Most of the Filipino nurses I know are so diligent and prudent, and Johns Hopkins Hospital for example w
ricman is right. By emphasizing the term "we're the best" will create a perception that Pinoy Nurses are arrogant. Be humble of what you achieve on the level nursing professionalism. Many are aware that there are lot of good Pinoy Nurses but there are also incompetent and are bad egg to the profession just like any other nurses, be local trained or foreign trained.
I am a Filipino nurse and I am very proud of who I am and what I have achieved.
There is no question that we are excellent nurses but we should avoid emphasizing that "we are the best" in the world. This statement will create conflict among other nationalities or groups.
If we are the best then what are they? Second best?
Although in reality "some" may not be excellent nurses, it is safe to say that we are ALL GOOD NURSES making a difference in our patient's lives. ALL not just Filipinos.
Starting next year Switzerland is going to hire nurse from the philippines.. Reason why?? Because they said filipino nurse are well educated and have a very good manners.
Look, I work at Hopkins and I worked and have worked with filipino nurses here and just like EVERYTHING else, there is the good and the bad! For ppl to keep making the comments that "They are better nurses than others" is ridiculous! American nurses are trained as well as filipino nurses! The filipino nurses that I have had the prilege to work with are EXCELLENT nurses, but I would not dare make the mistake of classifying EVERY filipino nurse based on those nurses...that is just ridiculous!!
Lasrin who told you that??, they cannot be a nurse if they knows, nothing, In Chicago alone, do you kn0w Filipino nurses excell on the nursing school in Citu College, compare to other nationalities? check the NCLEX ..how many Filipino nursing student passed the exam compare to other nationalities and US Citizen. then tell me
What they do not tell you is that there are many "colleges" in the Philippines that are nothing more than paper mills. Despite the use of American books, and the American methods, that are some significant differences, educational errors that have to be corrected on the job.
This said, just like any other imported culture, as long as there are not too many of any single foreign cultured nurses in a unit there is no problem. Too many pinoy, or Koreans, or any other, and there is a problem.
@Lasrin I am an emergency room nurse here in Florida and I am proud to say that I have received so many compliments from out of state and local patients that " the filipinos are the best nurses in the world".
@Lasrin This is no different from the 90-day wonder nurses that private schools in this country are producing. The BIG difference is that the nurses trained on this 90-day wonder schools here are HS grads who are irresponsible and are in it simply and only for the money.
Almost 75% of the rank & file nurses in the good hospitals in CA are Filipinos - that is why they are good hospitals that pts actually like to be admitted to.
People dont know that the most caring nurses are filipino nurses! Be a patient in a hospital and compare! I can assure you that they are better than the Others!
All they ever seem to do is complain about the "lack of competence and communication skills" of the Filipino nurses... that is untill they end up on the hospital bed and wonder why there aren't enough nurses to care for them at all.
