Only blistering agents were used in WW1, not the hundreds of times more powerful nerve agents. Luckily.
The first type of nerve gas, Sarin, was only discovered in 1939, rather accidently by german chemist Gerhard Schrader while his company was trying to develop a more effective insecticide supposed to kill by instantly disrupting the nerve systems of insects. Hence the name. Only problem was that it also disrupted the central nerve systems of mammals.
@Chris27tuh The show was canned because of both costs (the SFX budget was enormous, the highest on television at that time, as it was back when CG renders were more costly than cost-effective) and low ratings to support a show that cost so much.
I know they said there was a manpower shortage but even with that it seems unlikely that the Marine Corps would stick it's best pilots in a situation like this. In reality these guys would be flying convoy escort.
Small error in the intro. Only blistering agents like mustard gas and phosgene were used in ww1.
Nerve gases are something completely different and more toxic, discovered long after ww1.
Gasmasks are useless against most of them as they also enter the body through the slightest skin contact.
Within seconds after entering the body, they interupt nerve connections in the human and animal's nerve systems, paralyzing the lungs and hearts and cause body wide spasms, hence the name.
@rudimen7ary Hmm, interesting argument. Flawed, but interesting. Nationism is far older than the 19th century. You should read up on David Lloyd or Lisa Lowe about nationalism if you want some good discussion on it. Wars like the Seven Year's War/French and Indian War and the earlier Nine Year's War were fought along nationalist lines. Nation-states have fought one another since their creation/inception.
So by that logic you're saying we'd never be pulled towards the outside of a vehicle when driving around a corner, or ever feel the effects of inertia or centrifugal force because gravity would cancel them both out?
I really don't know why I care enough to even post this, it seems like a simple enough of a concept that it wouldn't need an explanation.
The difference is: Today´s vehicles don´t produce their own gravity, but are dependant on Earth´s gravity.
But it is likely that in a space craft which creates its own gravity the centre of this gravity would remain on the bottom of the vehicle, even if the vehicle turns around.
I remember watching this show when it was on. It was a quality show. I think it was right up there with Star Trek as far as Science Fiction shows go. I guess it just goes to show that sometimes no matter how good a TV Show is it just comes right down to luck as far as it's "commercial" success goes.
Many thanks for the info. I've always liked this piece although I'm not a big fan of classical music. To answer your question; No I've never seen FANTASIA. I despise everything Disney.
You know, I hate to admit it because I'm a huge B5 fan, but you may be right about that. This was a great show & I'll never forgive FOX for killing it and Firefly. Funny how they can do that, and consider a remake/continuation of 90210.......
I'm with you on that one. I hope whoever is responsible for the cancelation of that show burns in hell forever! Grrr. Space had BSG-like potential, if you ask me.
@antred11 Agreed. I thought that it was never given a fair chance. It cost a lot to produce because the CGI wasn't where it is today. This is definitely something Ron Moore should consider taking a fresh look at.
That's not giving Firefly a fair shake, FOX screwed them over worse than S:A&B. I can see why people wouldn't care for it much if all you got to see was half of the 1st season in a mixed episode order starting with Episode 2 and ending with the Series Pilot.
Throats need to be slit open over at 20th Century FOX for what they do to shows like S:A&B, Firefly, and other shows like them.
SAaB was indeed a fine show, but Firefly is one of the greatest cult sci-fi shows ever created. That rare amalgamation of talent...from the original concept right through to the writers and cast...it's something that comes along once in a lifetime. The characters were way deeper than SAaB, and the on-screen chemistry a lot more apparent.
My gf is a die hard Firefly fan...I just don't see whats so great about it...its just western set in space....personally I think Farscape is the best Sci-Fi ever made...even better then Stargate and Star Trek series
I like Farscape, too. I'm more a Trekkie than anything....but Firefly is amazing. The western in space thing is inspired. Also, it's a very clever guess at the future. The Chinese are heading to be the largest superpower the world has known, so the heavy Chinese influence and 'galactic slang' speak in Firefly, which incorporates a lot of Chinese cussing, is a very likely prospect by the time we branch out into space. It would literally be a new frontier...and, as such, very western like.
I'm a Trekkie too, thats why I loved Farscape...it had all the elements of a Trek show...not saying Firefly was bad...but they ended it just when it was getting interesting
@Dalbert342 Firefly wasn't ended by choice of the producers or creator, it ended due to Fox not wanting it on air anymore. They only accepted the show to fill in a spot on their schedule until they found something else to put there. Heck they even aired the first episode last, that' how much FOX didn't care about the show.
FOX also cancelled this one after the season was over. Bastards...
ya..Fox can air some of the great thing of all time but then they kill. it lets not forget Fox thought Star wars was going to be crap so gave all the rights to Lucas lol. this is also the same company that canned Family guy twice in a row lol.
What a great intro.

@Crymson1 This was an awesome show. I heard that the reason for cancellation was due to the fact the X-Files got more of the production budget.

Great show. Some very memorable episodes. Wish it had gone on longer, the last show seemed like a very hurried way to end the series.

The first one was Sarin, accidently discovered by Dr. Gerhard Schrader in 1938 while trying to develop a more effective insecticide.
The name Sarin stands for the names of the scientists involved in its discovery :
(S)chrader, (A)mbros, (R)üdiger and Van der L(IN)de.

The series was brilliant, this line isn't:
"a cold modern war, born from ancient nationalist hatred"
There is nothing "ancient" about nationalism for it is an invention of the 19th century.
