I would consider starting with a more simple concept for a game that uses basic shapes. FPS games are a tad bit more advanced if you are going for a more realistic idea. Focus more on base programing polish and the engine itself before design. ;]
for shadows, you could either use pre rendered materials with shadows on, or you could use GLSL, but you need a good graphics card for the second one. mine is 256mb ati radeon card, and it cant run GLSL.
i agree with snowappleman, what you should use is the unreal game engine 3,you can make games that are competitive with today's games being made for the 360 and ps3.
Ya the problem is unreal is shit hard to learn and you have to have the license to make it for ps3 and 360. You also have to have a good computer or else it wont work. Just sayin
Materials are the textures so you already have that down. right now, Blender only supports shadows from spotlights, make sure GLSL shaders are turned on, make a spotlight, and it should work fine. as for the child of the camera (gun) moving around, that's because you scaled it or something. I would go to object mode, snap the selection to cursor, then do the same in edit mode to center it and make sure the scale is good and everything. to reset it, hit ALT + S, for rotation its ALT + R, etc
Not sure if you fixed your material problem yet, but you need to UV map all of your objects and map the textures to UV if you want images. If you want to change the normals of things you will also have to check "normal map" on the image.
i think u should use UDK if u want to create a creat fps and not only a super lowpoly game!

I would say pay attention more on gameplay, graphics at this stage is not important. Try to make an interesting game
