Obviously if it came with great ease for us to grow our own tobacco it would simply be made illegal to smoke, as it would be out of their hands and they couldn't tax the hell out of it. It doesn't take a genius to realise the positive effects of weed compared to the deathly negative effects of both alcohol and cigarettes, yet they are both legal. I'd say it's all to do with taxation. If the government could somehow make it impossible for people to grow their own they could grow it themselves and stick a huge amount of tax on it. Trouble is, there will always be dudes growing and selling, it's out of the Governments control so they do the only thing can can think of and make it illegal. Smoking is legal, of course it is, because we rely on it being imported over here with all different flavours nicely packaged for our convenience.

In Southern California that is steadily becoming a reality. I live in San Diego and in the city of El Cajon, you cannot legally smoke on the street. Cops generally don't give a shit though...

a big reason its illegal is because the drug companys pay the government money....drug companys could use pot but its more profitable to make there own meds (man made)....they wouldnt be able to charge people alot of money on something that comes from the earth so they make it in a lab and jack up the price....its all about the dollers

Salvia is a plant that grows in dirt like Marijuana. Plus the government would gain huge profits from legalization. Not everyone would grow their weed. Of all the people that you know whom drink beer, how many have a micro brewery in their kitchen? Same goes with Cannabis. Who would spend several months growing a plant if they were able to just run down to the store and buy some?

actually there's a lot of reasons why they don't want to legalize it. One of the reasons is the "war on drugs". They use the numbers from people being caught selling or in the possession of marijuana to mess with the percentages and make it seem like there are more harmful drugs out there than there actually are.

Thats a really bad assumption, ALOT of people love growing weed for fun its a great hobby that people get into, and even more people grow for economical reasons.
Its very easy to grow cannabis once you get the hang of it, and Its much cheaper because even once its legal the price is still going to be ridiculous.
