  • 0:08 nite nite my son, I Got U NZ xxx

  • Seeing things as this one makes me think that We all are, nowadays, using technology instead of creativity. How cute, how creative this is.

  • My bfs grandfather drew good night kiwi and the chesdale cheese characters. He's a lovely man, Sam Harvey is his name.

  • Does any one remember that back in the day, when there was a fault in the broadcast television would show a picture of a kiwi pulling out the plug? I'm asking that because TV2 just cut out just now. I wish they still did that. I wish I could find a copy of that online too!

  • The song is a lullaby called Hine e Hine

  • @cupid1984 - The Kiwi first broadcast on TV2 in April 1975. It showed the Kiwi getting out of his director's chair, then pulling a switch to cut the power, then wave bye bye to the audience.

  • @BloodyBarlow - The version of the Kiwi you are seeing began broadcasting in 1980. The Kiwi dates back to 1975 when it showed the Kiwi leaving a director's chair, turns down the lights and waved to the audience in pajamas before going to bed. From 1976 until 1980, the Kiwi went into a TV camera.

  • He just fliped that cat a few times!! Lol this cute:3

  • BRING BACK THE GOODNIGHT KIWI :D i would love to see it again on tv

  • Gosh Never noticed it before they even have the southern cross sparkling in the corner, This use to make me sad when I was younger my friend the TV was going to sleep :) it was a big thing when we only had two channels.

  • well damn that brings back memory's awesome! :D

  • God,don't ever let the Aussies get hold of this if we lose the Bledisloe cup.

  • Ohmigosh that's adorable.

Why don't American stations have anything that awesome?

  • @Cheyenne17124 We don't have it anymore either. It stopped being broadcast in the '90s

  • ITS SO CUTE!!!

  • memories of being a kid again, was a real treat to see this back then cos we were never usually up that late. can't believe how many people have said it used to creep them out, i never got that about it, loved it. Anyone seen the escape rentals van with the tv kiwi murals on the side ? very cool

  • goodnight kiwi..miss u much!!

  • Time is running out for the Goodnight Kiwi. He is going to be once again jobless. In March 2011, TVNZ 6 is going to be replaced by U.

  • ohh the homesickness:--(haven't seen that in years thx tv nz

  • Does kiwi even care bout the cat, he almost left him in the dark room. Lol

  • Thumbs up if this use to creep you out before you went to bed

  • Is the Goodnight Kiwi related to Piwi The Kiwi? Are they brothers? To find out, watch WORLD WONDER FROM DOWN UNDER – Video. Available on YouTube.

WARNING: Some of the language used is NOT politically correct. May offend Namby Pambies, Hoity Toities and other weak-minded bastards!

  • @DeaniusDaGenius

Great video...I know you have a business to run and need to promote yourself but jeez......no way will I buy anything now. Ease up a bit and stop spamming please. Enough already..

    !

  • @kiweeburd ...your comment and feelings are hereby acknowledged. Di you note that the video is 99% non-commercial and, judging from the majority of comments, thoroughly enjoyed by most viewers? Regrettably, YouTube makes no provision for promoting vids except through methods like the ones I use. Ah well, can't please everyone! Cheers. :-)

  • I remember reading the books about Goodnight Kiwi when I was little but the only thing I didn't understand and still don't is why does a Kiwi have a pet cat?

  • The letter the KIWI stuck in the bottle read "Old Man is out.... Come bang me in Sattelite Dish"

  • @MADEINAUSTRALIA76.....WTF......you are insane....in the membrane!!!

  • Don,t worry about the door hinges being on both sides of the door or the cat beating him up to the top us KIWIS are fill of surprises

  • Comment removed

  • @sygo7g dont get me wrong I think its quaint, we all hark back to days gone by and this is a New Zealand classic

  • i used to stay up and watch this when i was kid. A simpler time i miss it.

  • I thoght Kiwis were nocturnal??????????

  • LOL i was just playing this and my mom walked past and was all like OMG this brings back the good old days .i wasn't even born when this was on but i like the idea of it

  • The tune still gives me goosebumps. It don't help either when you go to a tangi and one of the hymns you'll hear a waiata sung in the exact tune

  • It's not a kiwi! Kiwi has no wings!

  • omg this reminds me of my nan & koros house, i was allowd to stay up until there was nothing left on tv lol

  • Why oh why did they ever take this away, *sniff sniff our mokos will never grow up with such fond memories of Television NZ lol.

  • thanx youtube 4 bringing this clip back, brings back good memoryz az a kid just staying up 2 watch goodnite kiwi on t.v.

  • this thing makes me want to cry, love it

  • brings back memories....much enjoyed...thanks Gary :--)

  • I've watched this last night on "Celebrating 50 years of Television" and it bring back memories of me going to bed late every night because of this. I wish that they bring it back for good.

  • awesome memories , how things have changed.

  • So many memories, great times, whats it going to be like in another 10/20 years or so.

Hey bondi0011 things are definitely to serious these days, someone is doing something stupid everyday to cause rules to change & be more strict & peoples lives are getting busier. live in the moment.

  • Its weird that this one the cat stays awake and on the other one on tv2 "posted by Wrappedinplastic" it goes to sleep. LOL i no thats weird but im bord and i thot i mite let u no

  • The world has become to serious man, what happened to watching Dave Dobyn at the mount soundshell for 20 bucks, fishing at 2 in the morning as a 10 year old, sleeping under the tables while the old man had a few drinks at the pub, the world should go back to the 70s and 80's BBQs knowing your neighbour, Go the Goodnight Kiwi

  • omg I remember this when I was only a kid. Those were the days..the generation these days have no idea just how lucky yet how unfortunate they are at the same time. If I had to do it all over again, I would, I truly miss these days, NZ was a lot much better back then, I don't know how to explain but it was so much better

  • nice man weres it all cone?

  • night all

  • so why not bring it back again as all the good ole times are all gone now

  • i use to be scared of this theme song and cartoon wen it came at night.lol..

  • lol its still on tvnz 6 at midnight!!

  • hello, i remenber that you has a other video where, kiwi do a find, where i don´t know but the song was a song of Yan Tiersen, is a wonderfull song and i question me that you can say me the mane of that song i love you video.

  • loved this piece

  • This song used to make me want to cry when i was little, its such a SAD piece of music. I used to feel like the kiwi was going to lay down in bed to die or something, it used to make me feel so sad!

  • @lizdylanboykie i thought that tv ended forever

  • Used to watch this all the time. Didn't like it at the time as it meant it was Bedtime. Brings back loads of memories though. Lots of fond ones.

  • i used 2 watch it wif mi sis when i was little.

  • omg!!! this sooo brings back memories!!!

  • its awsome

  • but i used to hate it cos it meant bedtime for me lol

  • I love this .. I used to watch it all the time as a kid before I went to bed! It was like my goodnight story. :P Shame that they stopped it though.

  • i remeber this used to scare the shit outa me wen i was 5

  • The music for the goodnight kiwi is 'Hine e Hine written by my aunt Princess Ti Rangi Pai. She would have been so proud.

  • i used to love this. dont remember the tv switching off though.

just watching this, does the cat remind you of "dog" from footrot flats movie? the movements seem really similar.

  • TVNZ6 plays this at the end of their broadcast day. I remember staying up just to see this, as I'm sure many of us did.

  • I assume that's a 2-way switch, otherwise it's illegally wired.

  • Aw i was born in this year dam i missed it!

  • @Drummaboi2000

    Me too budd=(.

But My oldman alway's sanq it to me before he went to work at like 3am.

    he'a was/still is a truckie=)=)

  • How did the cat make it up the stairs?

  • does anyone know if the cartoonists name is frank harvey and is he still alive

  • im tired now..... -_-*..ZZzzz...

  • I rememba staying up with my older brotha & sistas to watch this .... then id quickly run off to bed before hearing the loud beeping sound that the tv makes when it's finished (when the screen has the stripes coming down in red, yellow, green & blue) .... good times!! ...

  • My teacher last year told us how when she was at her Nana's house, she'd stay up late to watch it. Apperantly it was cool to.

  • aw this is cute

  • hahaha, awesome reading everyones posts and some hardcase ones too. I used to hate it when this came on because it meant tv was over for the day and it was time to go to bed.

  • member no2 yr a minga.

  • What you don't see is that both the kiwi and the cat are microwaved to death when transmission begins the following day.

  • im Aussie and i think this is very cute it really shows new zealand to the world!

  • O.M.G The Goodnight Kiwi haha.....I always wandered why they just suddenly stopped airing this??? I was chickenshit everytime I'd watch this on T.V. ....now I realize my goodness I was afraid of an animated kiwi & cat? LOL...It wasn't so much the goodnight kiwi...it was AFTER the g.k that scared the crap off me...you know the black screen with the neverending beep sound...THAT was scary...nevertheless I miss this so much, can't believe it['s been that long. Love my Kiwiana culture:)

  • omg i just posted my comment & noticed u had something similar about the beeping sound hahaha ... id run to my room!! hahaha

  • Yeah the beeping sound was some freaky shit right? I mean they could have had some easy listening music like a beautiful symphony after the GoodnightKiwi but hell they had to end it with a scary fucking beep LOL. Maybe it was intentional you know like Ok kids the cute mushy kiwi is gone to sleep ...NOW FUCK OFF TO BED *BEEEEEEEEP* LMAO....Well looking back that's how I see it LOL.

  • i love it, but its so ironic that the kiwi and the cat are friends...

  • I miss these cartoon's. :)

Good ol' Good Night Kiwi. :D

  • Oh yes, It's on my Maori records and the Kiri Te Kanawa cd I bought home to OZ from NZ.

  • Hine Hine - maori lullaby

  • I'm an Aussie who's been across the Tasman for a holiday and have only come across this here on youtube. What a cute and memorable way to close up tv for the day. I guess NZ now has 24 hour tv like we do on this side of the ditch, so such daily endings are not necessary now. Good memories for Kiwis, though.

  • awesome goodfeelings from this, tear from my eye with that sound...........thanks for the gd memorie, Kauwhaka you are right this is within our dna

  • Wow! The instant the music started I felt the urge to turn of my computer and head to bed! This tune is in my DNA and triggers so many memories... The house I grew up in, the ugly gold &black 70's style couch, the KBHS school uniform and, of course, the sound of me mums voice saying "Right, off to bed!"

  • Chur goodnite Kiwi & the cat still legends

  • yeah i used to hate when there was no more telly then we had to listen to all these stories from mum and her friend about stuff from the old days.

  • I so wish my babies had grown up with this too ;0)

  • havnt heard this for years, much thanks 4 the post, i sit here and watch it over and over remembering my grand parents that have passed on now. and the words BED

  • pretty cute:D

  • Twas a fav of mine,bloody fast-cats,lol

  • man i rmemba this old skool!

there waz another 1 though an i used 2 hate it because i had 2 go bed hahaha!

  • I used to love this video - really brings back the memories - iconic ad!

  • I use to be scared of this y???

  • You know I just ADORE the beautiful Maori music:so SOOTHING and tranquil! It's one of the things I really grew to love on my holiday to New Zealand (from MANY years ago) and it makes this so much more special!

  • How cute! I like this!!! :-)

  • I loved this when I was it kid, and it's just as nice to see and hear now. Thanks!

  • Damn that brings back the memories, used to stay up and watch that in the weekends when I was like 4 years old.

    Classic

  • Why couldn't things have stayed the same as they were back then.

    Curse you technology!

  • @elfirrepins i agree. better with old-fashioned looking t.v.'s and t.v. shows in hi-def, 90's wards, rather than all the hi-def, wreckage from 2010-esque cartoons and movies!

  • I don't know why, but this ad used to scare the sh... out of me when I was little. Now, watching it as an adult... aahh..it's not that scary :-)

  • Correct me if im wrong, but i know i'm not !.

There were 2 different versions, one where the cat lay down at the end and one where the cat sat up.

Can't remember which channel had which at one stage, think the cat lay down on channel 2.

What was this a symbol of horizontal polarization vs vertical polarization ?.

  • How times have changed.

  • i used to always watch tv when i was little and this is the last thing i would watch every night. brings back long lost memories. thanx for posting this vid. excellent.

  • well of course it was the last thing you watched every night because it was the last bloody thing on!

  • 'Classic' Kiwiana this, Good old kiwi and his mate the cat, yes one of the best ways to sign off for the night when TVNZ finished up at night, then off to bed you went till sunrise to another day, now 24/7 365 days of the year. thanks for postiing this.

  • yep that was old school it brings back my childhood days with the good night kiwi!

  • hahaha

brings back memories of simpler times, staying up late watching twilight zone with Dad (R.I.P)who had fallin asleep, snorring away on the best chair in the lounge, and me and my brothers and sisters arguing over whos to turn off the telly cause we were all to scared too after watching Twilight zone lol

well, with this music who can blame us!

    AHH the memories!

  • yeah kind of takes me to the old days but watching these things triggers memories good and bad bt mainly good

  • OH MY GOODNESS! I remember this from when I was a kid!

  • this made me sad.. strangely..? Why'd they get rid of it..?

  • THINK, TV END UP GOING 24 HOURS A DAY,

  • soy latinoamericano y vivo en España, me gusta mucho Nueva Zelanda, es un pais hermoso, cudenlo y amen sus cosas, que bonito es este comercial, muy nostalgico...muchos besos y abrazos...ed.....

  • Go the KIWI'S

    Gotta love the old stuff

  • I left in 86 when I was 9... I was talking to friends today about how TV in NZ used to close down at night and when I moved to Australia there was no Goodnight Kiwi!

  • get bak hea boi NZ the place u shud be we being overun by so many other cultures we are losing ours

  • we have already lost ours, Australia has lost theres too, they just like we was all about good night kiwi, they was about skippy the kangaroo and blinky bill.. but this shitty new age we live in we all mix of other countrys now.. :(

  • Australia should've had a Goodnight Koala, and Canada, I wish we had a Goodnight Beaver. That would've been cool beans.

  • I had a goodnight beaver last night...

  • lmaooo... That made me laugh. +1 for you good sir.

  • I've lived in Australia for nearly 25 years, and hold dual citizenship. In fact, I've generally come to see NZ as nearly the 7th state of Australia. But one evening at an internet cafe in town, I stumble upon the iconic Goodnight Kiwi clip. Instant nostalgia attack.

So many of you have responded to this video with goosebumps (as I did!), tears and memories of being freaked out as a kid (a combination of age and time of night). It makes me feel like a Kiwi at heart, after all!

  • I live in London now and today due the credit crunch there is talk of shutting some TV down at midnight. I was telling my children about Goodnight Kiwi and so I thought I must search for it. I left in 83 so its cool to see it again.

  • brings me back to the 80's when I lived in NZ as a kid. MEMORIES :) hahaha It used to scare me but I couldn't stop watching it for some reason.

  • same here - goodnight kiwi freaked me out too lol. good to see the clip again brings back so many memories as a young kid.

  • Is the music in the background the theme from this?

Because it then makes sense why this is the music played when Aurora died on Outrageous Fortune, lol. Was wondering about that.

  • It's called Hine O Hine

  • Awsum gud to c sum old school kiwi stuff even tho it was straight to bed wen it finished lol

  • That was the bit that freaked me out - I love TV and I hated it to end

  • So when he goes up the elevator its actually come down a second time, being the fact the cat used it the first time. Sorry just muttering away to myself as I remember wondering how the cat got up there, lolz the things you remember when reminising.

  • Wow, I always wondered how the cat got up there.

  • holy moses, were did this come from, havnt seen this since i was a young fulla

  • ahhh the memories..so good. though goodnight kiwi did use to freak me out a bit!

  • I could understand if it was the EML version...

  • They better bring him back on or Ill be pissed at TVNZ.

  • they did a few days ago

  • it airs on tvnz 6 at midnight

  • lol after 6 years of having to go to bed when goodnight kiwi came on, i only just relised kiwi's are nocternal. thought it was kinda ironic

  • The tune is to 'Hine e Hine' a Maori lulaby song!

  • TVNZ are bringing the Kiwi and Cat back for the summer period in 3 all-new animated shorts and will be done in 2-D.

The music will be retained and the first clip airs tomorrow night (Dec 1).

  • i love watching this! i was one when it stoped showing, makes me want to chuck the 24 hour tv and bring him back! maybe that can happen for one night only as a remembrance or something...

  • yeah man thanks for posting this hey blast from the past big time

  • Thanks for posting this. Brings back memories. I never was allowed to stay up 'late' enough to watch it (must have been all of 11 pm when TV shut down in the 70s and 80s?) but remember how they would sometimes play it 'specially for the kids' at around 8 or something on that request show? Makes you proud to be a Kiwi. Since we're such a small country, most people have shared memories if they grew up round the same time. The music is Hine E Hine, a Maori lullaby. NZ was the best place to grow up.

  • The request show 'I Like That One 2', right?

  • I just about cried watching this. Brings back great memories of my childhood growing up in New Zealand. When days were spent climbing trees, playing bullrush with the neighbourhood kids and on Saturday mornings watch cartoons, Yahoo and the Pepsi Chart Countdown. Glass bottles of milk in crates were delivered to your door on Monday mornings, a walkman was the must have electronic, Polar Pops were 20c and a $10 fish n chips special could feed a family of 15 lol Ah, how times have changed.

  • I used to dread when this came on because it was always followed with "right, time you went to bed"

  • OMG!! I thought I was the only one that used to get freaked out by the Good Night Kiwi! How funny! Lol.

  • Don't ask me why, but the good night kiwi use to give me nightmares as a kid lol

  • If you saw the EML parody, that would be understandable

  • Damn that bought back some memories lol! I use to hate it when it came on ovbiously cause it was time to go to bed.. and I didnt want to!.. and the song gave me the creeps! weird.

  • That is so cool. Takes me right back to when I was a kid. I was just talking to a friend about the TVNZ kiwi a wee while ago. Good to be able to see it. Weitd to think we didn't have all night TV once.

    Thanks

  • We used to have this up here in Darwin many years ago, I think it was associated with 'Territory Television,' maybe the old channel 8.

These days most of our stations never close, so no need for a 'goodnight'. How times change.

  • The music makes this fantastic. I remember the cat curling up though?

  • That brings back some good memories

  • It was so nice to see that again. Gosh it only seems like yesterday when it was on air. Thank you for sharing :-)

  • ohhhh man, memories... good times..

  • yay reminds me of when i was little n used to jump up out of me bed and watch it then go back to sleep!!!

  • a true kiwi......he likes his pussy on top too!!

  • im going to bed now...

  • This is part of my nightly routine now. Watch Neighbours and Shortland Street or Outrageous Fortune, and then The Goodnight Kiwi before it's off to bed for me.

  • I grew up in NZ and remember watching this.............it brings back so many memories

  • ha ha me too

  • I'm sleepy now after watching that.

  • he is wearing this typical dirty vest what camera guys, photographers, movie directors and some artists wear! :))))

  • lol

  • Just loved it .nothin like that now

  • remember this as well...cute!

but there are two variations...at the end the cat sat up on the blanket on TVOne...but the TV2 variant...the cat is curled up on the blanket. Anyone got that one?

  • Are you referring to the South Pacific Television (now TV2) version from the mid-late 70's?

  • omg i soo remember this!! we always use to watch tv till this lil closing animation of the kiwi n his cat, and then it was kind of scary when the colorful stripes came up and tv made that annoying high pitched beep noise, memories..

  • Too cute. Gosh I remember seeing this when I was young and babysitting as a teenager and had to stay up late until the kids' parents came home in the wee small hours. Was awful when this cute ad finished and there was nothing else on to watch except the test pattern! Those were the days...

  • there was also a 'goodnight kids' as well some were scared of that one, however this one is very nice lol

  • Now why couldn't any stations Canada have such a clever shut down animation? The best we got was a "Thanks for watching CFPL, good night!" followed by a test pattern.
