Actually technically it's more like abduction, inference to the best explanation. From the premise that a given hypothesis provides a better explanation for the evidence than any other hypothesis, you conclude that the hypothesis is true.
My Girlfriend, upon watching this clip, said that "He [Jeremy Brett] is a brilliant Holmes and his voice is liquid sex." I don't quite know what to make of this. Someone please deduce something from it.
And a nifty can of that 'Liquid Sex' stuff, I hear the kids these days are raving about it... Otherwise, there's a more than slight chance she's dumping you for Mr Brett. Or, someone with the aforementioned items. . .
My girlfriend's tastes tend exclusively toward the living. This I have ascertained via careful observation of her habits. And, since the brilliant Mr. Brett no longer fits within this category, it would seem highly dubious that she would dump me for him. Consider also that, while I lack a few of these items, I do possess more of them than any other who's company she keeps, and this possession includes the hat, the cane . . .
. . . and the quick wits (I do not number modesty among the virtues). Therefore, despite stray considerations to the contrary I deduce that I will never leave the house with an unbrushed hat, and I will entertain said notion as a working hypothesis.
He actually had corrective surgery when, I think, he was a teenager/young adult. He took eloqution(sp?) classes to help him. Just a little "fun fact". XD
Undoubtedly the finest iteration of the character. I received the complete box set for Christmas, which has led to my conversing in this particular idiom.

When Holmes puts the hat on his head, it reminds me of the part from the animated Robin Hood where Prince John puts the crown on his head and it's huge on him. lol
lol love it when he puts the hat on - his ears bend over :) love this episode and in my opinion JB is the best Holmes ever - not to mention the fact that he is beautiful :)
I love this scene so much! It is a pleasure to hear Jeremy's wonderful diction. And what a pleasure for the eyes he is...He is stunningly sexy with open collar, and his voice makes me melt....
(I think I am not the only who feels like that...:)))
I am a Holmes fan, however this particular abduction by Holmes (certainly not a deduction, except for some parts), is certainly rather bad. There are many equally suitable explanations for many of the features of the hat, and at least one of the inferences is rather bad. For instance, there is no sound scientific evidence linking the size of a man's head to his intellect; even though, at the level of species, there is some evidence that the skull-body ratio tells something about intellect.
I believe physiognomy was considered a science during the time in which this episode is set.
I also believe that this is not so much an example of abduction, as of inductive reasoning, which cannot be said to be certain until it is proven. ("...a form of theory-building, in which specific facts are used to create a theory that explains relationships between the facts and allows prediction of future knowledge" in wikipedia.)
In any event, it is delightful and from one of my favourite episodes.
@LordHamlet99 Absolutely so! People seem to forget that it`s 19th century and keep reasoning from the point of view of 21st century scientific facts...
I love Sherlock Holmes and especially how brett portrays him. If you want to join my group called "The Art of Deduction" on facebook your more then welcome to. I just started it and I basically set up puzzles and photos and what-not and people try to deduce it :) Hope to see you there.
@changingowl10 But the task is to describe the owner, not the hat itself. But you might say the owner likes round... and... black hats.... with red linings.
