@ guitarguy447: in the album version, they do say "who the fuck are you," two times, but it's hard to spot. that's why so many radio stations still play it. (On the album, try after the second verse and after the third verse.
Nice to hear John sing back-ups, back when he still could. Look, the 1981 Who was better than the 2000 Who not only beacuse of youth (although they were old then) but Pete was angry, confused, out of it and it gave the shows some edge. Now 82-83 shows did suck. As for Kenney, he was very good from 79-81 but was much stiffer in 82. It's almost has if he bulked his arms up so much he couldn't do fills beyond the snare drum
@EveryMn The only reason Simon Phillips got the job was because Roger Daultrey couldn't stand Kenny Jones and took a "him or me" stand in later reunions.
Sure I have seen many of the great Keith performances such as Cleveland 1975 or the Isle of Wight show. There is no replacing Keith moon however Kenney Jones is no slouch and his tightness forced them to play better as a group.
That is surely true, but Kenney Jones is not the sort of drummer that The Who were looking ror. That's why they now play with Zak Starkey, who plays way more like Keith Moon. I think Kenney Jones was too tight for The Who, a band which chose improvisation above just playing songs.
Its odd you say that. 4 years ago I met Zak Starkey at a non commercial music fest here in Louisville when he was with Johnny Marr and the Healers. I
shared with him that he was kind of a mix of both Moon and Jones in the way that he was flashy and yet very technical. He agreed and said he toned down in order to avoid the Moon comparisons. It was being more criticism than not for him.
The real reason Jones was cut was in 1988 Entwistle was being victimized by the Inland Revenue Service and the Who was paying Jones as a full member. The tour in 1989 was primarily to cover Johns tax bill and cutting Kenney for a session man saved them 25% of the net profits helping the financial portrait. Remember Keith had selected Jones as his replacement when he knew that Pete was going to fire him after the WHO Are you sessions.
its funny u say that. why on earth were the who gonna fire mooney? he was losing his edge, but they had such a great click with him. jones was an amazing drummer, but the rest of the bands output wasnt great after mooneys death. the reason jones was fired is cause roger never liked him. he finally convinced pete to kick him out
not quite. they were a great live band with kenny, but they put in much more power nowadays. they cant help it if their old, but they can help it if they dont try. in 1982, they didnt give a rats ass about their sound, but now they try. they might not be as good, but they try harder
haha. well, i think zak is a better drummer than jones is cause for one thing, he was taught by keith, and the second thing is ringo starr is his dad, so he got some help from him. i think there is waaaaay more power in their shows nowadays but they cant play as well as they used to cause their older. pete rog had no interest in the band after mooneys death. thats whats wrong. everyone else is fine. plus the recording instruments that they used on the 1979-82 tour werent too good
Zak can be all the better (whatever that is to one) drummer he wan't but they don't have the power/playing/sound/performance they had during 1979-1982. No comparison, they were simply better live band in everyway during that period.
nah. maybe during 79, and 80, but not later. the problem was that mooney had maybe 7 or 8 bad nights in his entire career and hundreds of good ones. kenny had some great nights but the problem was, and i quote roger, that those nights slowly became fewer and fewer. although, if the who ever did a reunion tour with kenney, id definetly see it for the historicle value, and the fact that twoards the end at the one off performances, kenney showed alot of enthusiasm
I love how Entwistle's just strummin power chords during the verse - yes, I am talking bout the bassist! Miss that power in the live shows nowadays....RIP John...LONG LIVE ROCK!
lol. we look at all the comments i left that people dissagree with about kenny, and nobody bothers to read this comment about poor john. i agree 100% heathor

Kenny was so the wrong drummer for them. A pocket player trying to play Moon licks. One of the worst personnel moves in rock...

People, I think we can all agree...
Simon Phillips is the least fitting drummer The Who have ever had.
EveryMn 4 years ago 7
@EveryMn I disagree. He has more power than Starkey ever will.

They fired this drummer in 1989 saying that he was boring. Personally I think they were full of shit as this clip shows!
