Kauffman's villain character was ahead of its time in terms of connecting to the audience and making them feel personally involved in the match. every time you hear a wrestler today mention the name of the city they are performing in, it is a tribute to Kauffman.
Ricky Gervais is doing something similar to Hollywood right now, and just like the hillbilly's of the 80's, they just don't get it... Hillbilly Hollywood, it has a nice ring to it. It just show's how far ahead of his time Kaufman was.

Andy Kaufmann didn't get injured at all. It was all a put-on. He and Jerry Lawlor planned the whole thing in advance in order to create a wrestling sensation and a series of "grudge" matches. This is done in wrestling all the time. It's called "a work". They set up a phony feud...in this case between Kaufman and Lawlor. They pick one guy to be the "bad guy" and get people angry. That was Kaufman. They pick one to be the "good guy". That was "Lawlor" It's not real.

Andy Kaufmann didn't get injured at all. It was all a put-on. He and Jerry Lawlor planned the whole thing in advance in order to create a wrestling sensation and a series of "grudge" matches. This is done in wrestling all the time. It's called "a work". They set up a phony feud...in this case between Kaufman and Lawlor. They pick one guy to be the "bad guy" and get people angry. That was Kaufman. They pick one to be the "good guy". That was "Lawlor" It's not real.
