The Symbiotes has clearly shown deep attachments to their host; Parker and Brock with Venom come to mind, and the Symbiote has also clearly shown that it doesn't want to share their host. In this show's case, take Peter's influence to push his friends away, and again when the symbiote tried to say they didn't need friends or family, and only needed each other. There are more examples but I won't list them.

@116gara Brock had an extreme anger towards both Peter and Spiderman. Spiderman made him lose his job, and Parker kept pushing him on and on, Peter not knowing. Brock may have understood, but he was still a little ticked. I would be if someone messed up my college fund. Maybe not to this point, but still.

Again, watch their previous conversation in "Nature v. Nature". Not a lot of dialogue, but it does reveal his bitterness. Another clue that Eddie was unstable was the fact that he constantly and needlessly put himself in harm's way with Electro and Lizard. Or in "Group Therapy", when Peter tells him to not leave him hanging, and Eddie answering "if only". Of course his jealousy is not going to be obvious that early on. It manifested itself subtly and without being too obvious.

It would have been cooler if venom had kept the identity of spiderman from eddie. When eddie found out that peter was spiderman, most of his reasons for hating him were nullified. Sure, he ran away when Kurt Connors became a lizard, but he came back as spiderman to save him. And so on and so forth.

Eddie was already insanely hateful of Pete and Spidey, even before the symbiote. He was jealous that Peter was raised by a loving family, while he was alone. The incidents just justified his repressed resentment, and the symbiote just fueled it beyond reason.

Watch "Nature vs. Nurture". Eddie says that he never considered him his "bro". That Peter had his "precious aunt and uncle" and he had no one and was always alone. Also, in the first couple of episodes, he "playfully" belittles and mocks Peter, under the guise of just messing with him. Eddie tried to be his friend because he was alone, but his jealousy was too much. The incidents with Lizard, Gwen, and his job not only made him more hateful, but also, in his mind, justified his hate.

And the "playful belittlement" you were talking about seemed to be nothing more than a little banter that both sides engaged in. Although, now that you mention it, Eddie took Gwen to the formal, and then when Pete showed up with MJ, Eddie asked her out as well, which I find to be a true taste of his jealousy.
