unfortunately story lines were from the same "i love lucy" writers who didn't progress with the times. by no means am i talking about current events. the story lines were basic, the acting was about reading cue cards & the slapstick was inane.
lucy was out of her prime by then, did things that were predicable & no longer innovative.
i had to stop watching when lucie jr moved to an apartment only a wealthy person could afford. it had become out of touch & no longer relevant...lucy's fault!
....the fact is, Lucy WANTED Viv to return as a guest. I can imagine she must have told her over the phone, "C'mon, Viv, I NEED you for this episode! I've got it all written out, and it'll be just like old times...we'll have FUN!!! Name your price- whatever you want, WITHIN REASON, you understand...how about it?". Viv agreed, and made several more appearances before the show ended in 1968.
This was the beginnning of Viv's "return" to 'THE LUCY SHOW"; she left after season three because she wanted to spend more time with her husband, John Dodds, in Connecticut. So Lucy changed the show's setting in season four, with "Lucy Carmichael" [and "Mr. Mooney"] relocating to Los Angeles after "Viv" got married and stayed in Danfield with her son, and Lucy's boy "Jerry" was enrolled in military school (ultimately never to be seen again), and "Chris" moving on as well....
Wat happened to Cris and Jerry, they showed Jerry a couple of time but nothing from Cris, They should have included the 2 children for the WHOLE run of series oh well
The only known riff between Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance had occurred on the set of "I Love Lucy" when Lucille Ball was pregnant with Desi, Jr, and she was just ranting and raving all over the set, screaming at everyone - Vivian Vance sauntered over to Lucille and bravely told her, "I'd tell you to go f*ck yourself, but I see Desi's already done that for you"!
@fusock TRY SOME OF THESE: Lucille, The Life of Lucille Ball by Kathleen Brady ; Love, Lucy by Lucille Ball ; The Comic DNA of Lucille Ball: Interpreting the Icon by Michael Karol ; Lucy A to Z: The Lucille Ball Encyclopedia by Michael Karol ; The Lucille Ball Quiz Book by Michael Karol
Vivian Vance quit "The Lucy Show" after the 1964-65 season because she was already living in the East at the time, and was getting tired of the weekly grind of going from East to West - after much pleading from Lucille Ball not to quit completely, but Vance stipulated she would only do so if she didn't have to appear in every episode- the same was also true for Ball's third successful sitcom, "Here's Lucy" -
There used to be a rumor circulating that Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance had a secret lesbian relationship - THANK GOD it was just that, A RUMOR - Lucille Ball was even reported as saying that she and Vivian Vance were like sisters than friends - SHAME ON whoever would start a vicious rumor like that-
@christheone8773 They "HAVE" to sully EVERYONE, especially those who have garnered a high level of love and affection of the public, to continually JUSTIFY such licentious and nasty proclivity and behavior.
You can already hear how smoking has taken its toll on Lucy's voice, even clear back then. This show seems like it was on a thousand years ago, but it sure was great to go back in time and see it again.
I always thought it was so funny how after Viv left and they moved Lucy's character from back east to California her two kids pretty much vanished into this air. I think I do remember them mentioning the son once. I believe it's the episode where Lucy gets drafted.
@ChandlerandMonica83 I read somewhere that Vivian Vance HATED the Ethel Mertz character, since most people were beginning to see her that way, as a frumpy, dumpy, overweight person - when she signed on to do The Lucy Show, she wanted her character to have the same name as hers-
@christheone8773 Oh, yeah it's true alright Vivian hated playing Ethel, and people did see her as a frump, frowsy, overweight and talks like a man. She almost didn't do The Lucy Show, until she saw that Vivian Bagley was different then Ethel Mertz, and the rest is history.
@adamdicy In her "I Love Lucy" days, Vivian Vance had a stipulation in her contract that she was to be a certain amount overweight, to keep in tune with her Ethel Mertz character-
Watching this episode's scene always makes me nervous, because if Lucy and Viv were very longtime friends who lived together for such a while, and Viv got married one summer between seasons 3 and 4 and left the show, wouldn't Lucy have probably known what Viv's husband looked like -- not to mention, probably have gone to the wedding? It was important continuity info that the show's new writers in Season 4 should have thought of seaming together.
Lucy and Vivian's Chemistry is always evident. People loved I love Lucy so much that they longed for those days which is why these two always Acted so great together.
Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance ALWAYS had great comedic chemistry - at 2:12, you can catch a fleeting glimpse of Lucille Ball's then-husband, Gary Morton-
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
She really shouldn't of tried to copy i love Lucy because it was sad enough people had to take the divorce but just copying it just makes it all worse i bet this Really hurt Desi deep in the gut seeing her with another man ouch i remember my first high school break up. After i saw him with another girl just two days after we broke up just really hurt my heart and made me upset but now i know he waz the fool not me.
You obviously do not know how talented Lucy really was. Please watch some of them and you will see. And also, you can't possibly compare the marriage of Lucy and Desi with a high school romance. They were a great couple but he did cheat on her constantly, or so everything that's published says. I'm glad she went on to make other tv shows. Need proof? Watch Lucy and Viv install a Shower. You will laugh your hiney off!
Thanks so much for posting this. Maybe someday we will get restored prints from the original 35mm negatives. I have several episodes in the public domain but they are all from 16mm syndication prints that are badly worn. The Lucy Show was in the Top 10 for all six seasons so obviously somebody watched it and I think it would do well on dvd.
I remember airports like that. Funny how they get perturbed about a friend's son yet neither mention their own kids despite having lived together and raised each other's kids for some years. Lucy has never met Viv's husband. How did Viv ,meet, court+marry him? When I was a kid, I thought Mooney was being hotheaded but now that I've worked with folks who think nothing of coming in late, bringing friends to the workplace with them+ gabbing with them instead of doing the work, I have empathy!LOL
I don't know, I get sad whenever I watch clips of The Lucy Show or even Here's Lucy. For me, Lucille Ball will forever be Lucy Ricardo, and Vivian will forever be Ethel. Nothing could top them as those characters. I understand Lucy's need to continue working, but the other series imo, were just sad imitations of what she once was. "I Love Lucy" is the cream of the crop, and the only one of Lucy and Vivian's series that I can truly give my heart to. Everything after that just doesn't cut it.
Understandable! Everyone loves "I Love Lucy".. it's iconic! But give "The Lucy Show" a chance! I actually enjoy it a little more.. Lucy and Viv on their own.. no men around! hehe
Lucy never met Viv's husband before Lucy moves to the West Coast?????
