The white thing that changes direction and pace is a chunk of ice (which there is an abundance of around space craft...look at any vid and you will see it) The reason it changes pace is because of the booster jet. The fast bit of debris could be anything, and it didn't just miss... You can have very little perception for depth in space because there isn't much of a foreground and the background is faaaar away...

I defo agree with criticmer. it's incredibly apparent that it was the force of the thrusters and that was an ice particle. You can see if you look close enough that the angle of the circular force from the thrusters is simply not at the right degree to be coming from earth.
The flash is the thrusters of the shuttle. the streak of light is the ice particle it pushes toward the other ice particle. when the force traveling slightly faster than the ice it pushed reaches the other ice piece... it then pushes that piece away at an angle. kinda like when a Q-ball hits another ball on the left side...it pushes it toward the right (depending on the angle). BTW the ice pushed can be seen in the bottom left hand corner of the original video. it looks as if it disappears.
start watching the bottom left hand corner of the original video at 1:37. as the piece floating up disappears at the exact moment that the flash occurs. hold a straight edge (ruler) from the spot it disappears and the streak. you'll see the streak came directly from that spot.

They spot em out, easily from cheesey shit such as, an input image or blank spot replaced. Easy to fake, but hard to be real.
