  • Hilarious movie! I had a blast!

  • he gots the beauty, that's enough

  • when the train felt into the river!

  • What a "train wreck"! Love it! LOL!

  • What is the name of the first song?

  • indeed. this soundtrack has no business here.

  • Where is the version, where the music score is composed by Joe Hisaish?

  • Who cried at 1:32:50?

  • @paratroop24 The banks, it was the most expensive shot in black and white history.

  • Music chosen is crap. Doesn't fit at all. There was a piano tune that was well accompanied with the video events.

  • nice movie... i like the kissing part @ 1:46:25 lol....

  • THIS COMEDY IS EXCELLENT, BUSTER KEATON WAS A GENIOUS, I LOVE THE GENERAL.

  • It's better at the faster framerate.

  • Do you ever get the feeling that comedy is just a big joke?

  • The score for this is brilliant.

  • Great classic picture

  • Haha he choked her then kissed her ROFL!

  • What's the name of the song at 0:32:40?

  • so boring

  • Is the actor playing the Army recruiter behind the counter the Phantom of the Opera?

  • @fushheads No, the Phantom of the Opera was Lon Chaney, unless you meant it as a joke..

  • @1529mc I just thought it looked like him.

  • This is one of my most beloved films. Buster is such a wonderful - good humored - actor. He inspires me a lot. Thumbs up Buster!

  • I love the Macho Man and all, but Pomp and Circumstance is so out of place... As is the rest of the soundtrack.

  • Where is the music from? I kinda like it.....

  • 31:00 First he didn't put enough powder, now he put the whole barrel of powder into a railway gun lol.

BTW, this is some history right here where the civil war first used such a thing even in Battles of Savage Stations.

  • Which delightful person chose to ruin this classic with Pomp and Circumstance?

  • Entertaining and funny!

  • God.....the music was really bad..... I hope there's a better version out there, because the movie was a masterpiece ! If anyone know about something better than that one, please tell me.

  • @jelaienfinue Click on "Kino classics the General"here on YouTube. In the right hand column you will see various The General uploads designated as being HD.Listen to the music(composed and conducted by Carl Davis)of those various snippets as well as the main theme that is played when you first clicked on "Kino classics...check out the music. But this will only benefit you if you buy the dvd.I don`t believe this Kino is complete anywhere here on YouTube.

  • For me this video HANGS at 33:38 and I can't make it proceed.

  • hi reddit

  • 0:37:10 COOL LOL

  • Does it have Joe Hisaishi soundtrack? I am searching for this version.

  • They spent all the money on the track leading up to the bridge, as well as the bridge itself, but didn't bother to spend a few dollars more to continue the track a bit past the bridge so it didn't look completely stupid to have a bridge leading to nowhere. I guess they didn't really care much about details in the silent movie era.

  • 1:32:50 for an epic Train Crash

  • Buster Keaton reminds me at Sheldon ind "The Big Bang Theory".... :D his face..

  • what a kiss at 8.00

  • huge fan of this movie...5th time Ive seen it...first time with this music. ouch

  • The music is wrong:( I recomend my clip: Sweet like:)

  • Jackie chan said he was inspired by this movie, as for not using stunts, or something like this I read in wikipedia (^-^)

  • Music is awful ive got the original recording on VHS tape where music is fenomenal.

  • It's a great film, but am I the only one who thinks that Sherlock Jr. is better?

  • @brandon91616 No,your not. I prefer Sherlock Jr. over this film too.

  • The best actor,director,stuntman ever!!!!

  • The music for this is HORRIBLE. They'd be better off if they did it old school, with a plinky plink piano the way it was done in the silent era.

  • Love love love this movie! It's brilliant, Keaton is a genius.

  • There may be no official soundtrack, but clearly the one to play with it is the one that was chosen as you say for "home viewing". This one's horrendously chosen. It's purely European. The one chosen for home viewing was a brilliant mix of Confederate and Union tunes. They mixed them together and they even changed from confederate to union when they crossed the lines that way if I remember, and then vice versa when going back.

  • @johnvandedem Agreed. Johann Strauss is out of place. Good movie, though, and amazing to know that Buster Keaton did all stunts by himself.

  • @johnvandedem here /watch?v=ncapCvkPgVw&feature=player_embedded

  • @goofermom Well, that being said, I'll ask if it was an "event showing" or opening night of a six-week run. Of course events always draw more because if you miss that night you've lost the opportunity. Whereas a six week run of this feature would ensure 5 and a half weeks of empty seats. It's what public school and necessitating two-income households have done to our once great culture. This movie should be shown in schools in lieu of MECHA tutorials.

  • What an absolutely TERRIBLE way to see this brilliant film. No one who watches it like this could possibly appreciate how great it really is...it's impossible. Atrocious, random music and HORRENDOUS picture quality. This is one of my favorite films of all time, but if it was between NEVER seeing The General or seeing it like this...I would prefer to never see it at all. Avoid, avoid, avoid!

  • i think that "the general" is keaton`s best movie!

  • i think "the general" is keaton`s best movie!

  • My favorite movie EVER!I can only enjoy this movie with the music soundtrack that it has on the KINO INTERNATIONAL dvd.It is music composed for the movie in 1987 by Carl Davis and conducted by Davis. There is an alternate organ score included, but I`m hooked on the Davis score. It really serves this magnificent film well.I would strongly recommend viewers to check out Keaton`s silent classic shorts here on YouTube:NEIGHBORS,COPS,ONE WEEK,CONVICT 13,THE PALEFACE,THE GOAT,AND THE BLACKSMITH.

  • The Carl Davis score is indeed the best. Years ago I attended a full-screen showing of The General at George Mason University, Virginia, with Carl Davis conducting the Liverpool Philharmonic LIVE. It brought you right inside the film -and it brought down the house! The audience was packed -all ages from young to old- not one gag was missed. Some gags I'd never seen before (on a tv screen) got roars of laughter. Applause over and over again for the great heroic gags! I'll never forget it!

  • Just brilliant. Funny to this day.

    8:49 "Goodbye my looov-aaaah!" XD

  • muito bom o filme surpreendente de um humor simples e ilariante

  • Yeah it came on TV quite a few times recently too on Bridges, and it did seem shorter. LOL The part when he shows his girlfriend his picture and the enlistment office are so funny! :)

  • OMG, Borodin too!

  • No one cares but how come the Saber Dance composed by Aram Khachaturyan in 1939 plays in the film made in 1926?

  • There is no original, but there are some soundtracks that were composed for the film...like my favorite is the piano soundtrack. I find the movie dull and boring with the other soundtracks that are just famous pieces put to the film...not even really cut to the film either

  • Silent movies could not draw a crowd nowadays. No, todays moviegoer needs to be told what's happening while they're watching the movie. Loud bangs, piercing screams and nonsensical dialogue punctuated with profanity are relied upon to keep todays ticket-purchaser attentive to the silver screen. This was refreshing to watch.

  • @20alphabet "The General" was shown at the Fox Atlanta last year. It drew a crowd of 1830 people who gave the presentation a standing ovation! There are still some cultured people willing to enjoy a classic silent film these days. :)

  • Love this movie.

1:32:55 - 1:33:00 Most expensive stunt during the Silent Era.

  • *flings piece of timber at oncoming mortar* That should do the trick.

  • pomp and circumstance? really? i guess i'm graduating early this year.

  • mute the music, simple as that.

  • Awesome movie! Took me three nights just to finish this though, just because it seemed to go on forever. I had to keep stopping it for something every time I tried to sit down and finish watching it. LOL Thank God I finally finished it. I really liked it though. And the part where he was choking her was super funny!

  • @lenamay521

It really isn't long at all.

  • the first high speed car chase :)

  • This is even worse than the remake of the Gold Rush

it ain't the same without the piano music

  • I med a few spelin misteks there day i! Abart this movie. Do yow know, i ait sin this film for agis on i still think is grait. It is a it?

  • The GREATEST MOVIE EVER MADE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And it didn't have a sound track only music score to be played by AN ORGAN as the movie is being played. I think the original music writen for this movie has unfortunatly been lost.

  • The GREATEST MOVIE EVER MADE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And it didn't have a sound track only music score to be played by AN ORGAN as the movie is being played.

  • Thank you! this was my first time seeing this movie and i really enjoyed it

  • I thought this movie was freaking hilarious!

  • Couldn't they just have one guy on a Piano provide the soundtrack?

  • Great!!!

  • thanks for posting (:

  • please everyone knows the song that starts at 0:44:30 pls pls pls!

    thanx

  • @andreicom1 it actually starts at 0:43:30 .... pls

  • It's amazing how much informatin we gather from sound. I find that I have to think much more just to take in what's going on during silent films. The sound effects and dialogue do so much in letting you know what's going on.

  • stunning shot at 37:04

  • Wrong description. The engineer of the train DID NOT pursue the train. It was the Conductor, William (Bill) Fuller. Fuller chased the train on foot for two miles, then picked up a pole car from a railroad crew. He also chased the General with two or three other locomotives along the way. This movie is in no way historically accurate.

  • @SethChrisDominic Yeah cause most movies go for accuracy rather than entertainment

  • @harceps Yeah well, that's like making a movie about Abraham Lincoln that has Lincoln fighting hand to hand with John Wilkes Booth before being heroicly shot in the heart. You just shouldn't change a HISTORICAL event for a movie. That's not how it works.

  • @SethChrisDominic Its ENTERTAINMENT!...not a documentary

  • SALUDOS: Si señor, nada tiene que envidiarle a otros comicos de su epoca

  • Does anyone know any info on this soundtrack I found?

  • Epic movie..

I remembered my dad had this on a VHS tape.

Watched it many times when i was a kid......., it really open'ed my eyes to music..

Ohh, and Keaton has the perfect "body launges" , and Mimics EVER.

  • You ad-model are sooo stupid with your small squeezed tits!

Youtube is boycotted from now on!

  • You can apply any music you like d-bags. If you don't like this "Tchaikovsky" guy, whoever he is, I personnally will be looping the great James "Spider" Rich's classic Benny Hill theme song.

  • a great cinematic experience!

  • its tchaikovsky, ya big dummies

  • Who the hell dislikes this movie?

  • I got an original poster of the movie "the General" it is framed and in mint condition from The Pacific film Archive" Berkeley, Ca 1972.. anyone interesting in buying it?

    transneural@yahoo.com

  • @transneural hey, how much are you asking for?

  • @transneural how much?....an original surviving to this day?....Im skeptical

  • Buster Keaton is pure genius...too bad he is still second to Charlie Chaplin who was more irritating than funny as the Tramp.

  • @ncisducky4ever I agree. I don't dislike Chaplin, but Keaton's far more endearing in his films. His characters are just so determined and plucky. :)

  • this version runs too slowly it's only supposed to be 75 mins long

  • 6 people are either mental or deaf

  • I love 16:40

  • bellissimo!great film with buster keaton.I love him!He was very espressive in this film without words

  • AMC just showed a great version of this with what I believe is the original music score. I must say, for such a movie, it made me laugh.

    His expressions are monumental.

I hate the music in this version :(

    Thanks for the upload!

  • if we can briefly forget Keaton's extraordinary personality, this could be any old film about the railways in wartime

  • I love Buster Keaton and US. In the 20s it was the dreamland of every european.

  • I'm trying to write a essay on his physical stunt humor, but I'm having trouble anyone got any ideas?

  • The music doesn't matter. This is a great film and thank you thank you thank you for sharing it here. :-)

  • @CiceroCanova The music totally matters. The music is pretty much one of the characters in a silent film. You'd know that if you weren't such a philestine curr.

  • @blargwee Lol, why thank you. :-) Of course I understand music adds another dimension to the silent film, but this is a great film with or without any musical accompaniment.

  • @blargwee Don't be a turd. Spelling would help too.

  • @eatyerbeans Sorry I don't slave over the minutiae of youtube comments.

  • @blargwee Nor manners as it would seem.

  • @eatyerbeans on the internet?

  • BEST MOVIE OF THE CENTURY HATS OF TO THE ACTORS AND THE DIRECTOR

  • BEST MOVIE OF THE CENTURY

  • thanks its been great to see a movie of 83 years ago better than all the modern crap

  • 0:01

  • One of my favorites.

  • That was entertaining. Best part is seeing that old ironside go down with the bridge.

  • not impressed with the score at all..........

  • i wached all the movie and enjoied with it too much.

  • what a shit!!!

  • commercials suck horse cock, any time a commercial is forced I will NOT ever buy that product.

  • i just saw a tinted version on tcm? is that how the film was orginally made or was it made in b&w?

  • @spike99lee well. It was made in 1927. So, b/w.

  • Joe Hisaishi: The composer for the Studio Ghibli, movies was one of the people who re-recorded the soundtrack!

  • hahahahha super film

  • Just watched The General and really enjoyed it, but I also miss the original score... This is by far the best Keaton film I've seen. Check out my film study blog Cinema Cram (blogspot) or find us on Facebook - search Cinema Cram

  • Bum. I thought this music didn't go with it. I was going to watch it later. May just have to find the original though now.

  • this movie is so funny i saw it in film class at school my teacher showed the class, this isnt the original soundtrack but the same version like TheJeepmaniac said THIS IS PURE ENJOYMENT

  • wow!1927!

  • Keaton did it all, incredible performer. I loved 'discovering' this amazing movie on our local tv network.

  • VidzBigger has comment

  • 1:17:00 is the best.

  • "The General" is Classic Buster Keaton!

  • Who cares about original soundtrack or version. THIS IS PURE ENJOYMENT!

    Genius, Genius = Keaton, Keaton

  • thanx alot. much appreciated.

  • Un genio absoluto.

  • An awesome movie!

  • most that i like

  • Hey youtube: thanks for the restored version!!!

    sarcasm

What the fuck, did ya'll project the film onto the wall, then videotape it, and then post it on youtube? This is a crap version.

  • The movie is great but where is the original soundtrack?

This music didn't fit the movie!

  • @MrWhiteops

There is no "original" soundtrack. The film was silent, and originally, someone played piano in the room where the film was played. For example, he would play faster music if it was in an action part. The one you remember is just one of the versions that have been adapted for modern days, to enjoy at your house. If this music is inapropriate, it is not because it is not the original soundtrack, it is because it is simply mischosen.
