  • awesome dawesome!

  • Kelly Hill* Not Kerry Hill...

  • She does not sound like a 17 year old. She sounds like she's about 12. lol. I guess this was what she was talking about when she said that she had a squeaky voice and people would make fun of it.

  • Thanks for uploading this (and other gymnastics fluff pieces). It's a fun, nostalgic trip down memory lane!

  • Well I take truth as authority rather than authority as truth. So when irrational logic or rather lack there of is made out as fact. I rebel against the foolishness and arrive at my own logical conclusion. I see black people as melanin dominant and white people as melanin recessive. that's the whole white and black thing but as far as Asian African Native American... that's not in the same jurisdiction as black and white!!! There are black and white Asinas Africans etc...

    Nationality vs color

  • Did the commentator say "Kerri Hill" at 1:21?

  • Yepppp

  • I still wish i could just turn on gymnastics now a days and see someone like her on TV

  • i think its kelly cause dominique saaid kelly is a ....

  • Hahah, she's so little!

  • i don't see it.

  • It's got to be the hairstyle, the eyebrows, the eyes, and the nose. all she needs is a rounder face.

Didn't realize i would offend anyone by saying that though!!! Just my personal opinion!!!

  • @Ezkeel - This isn't an outrageous comment, IMO. I've always thought she had some Asian-like facial features, too. Or maybe more like Native-American facial features. (If I'm remembering my history correctly, Native American "Indians" came across the Bering Strait from Asia. They don't look exactly like current-day Asians, but you can see some similarities.)

Dawes does have a Native American grandmother, so perhaps this explains her features.

  • Well no matter what her nationality is.

I say she is one fyne Mamma Jamma

I would love to speak with her one day because she also seems so well (g)rounded and intelligent!!!

  • In America, there's no "confusion" over her "nationality". Crudely-speaking, she's "three-fourths" black, so in America, she's unequivocally black. People with less "black blood" in them than Dawes- such as Tiger Woods - are considered black. People with one black parent & one white parent are generally considered black.

Just like Dawes, Brett Favre has a Native American grandparent, but you don't see any confusion over his nationality. In America, he's a white man- no ifs, ands, or buts.

  • i wonder why people are taking offense to our comments?

  • i agree but I find fault with the logic of the majority.

Dawes is definitely black but her nationality could be modern American she could be indigenous to the continent, or she might have come from South America or Africa somewhere. I am curious to know the heritage of people. Unfortunately its virtually taboo bring up things (the truth) that make us unique and I am constantly greeted with the disease of hatred.

This is why I take truth as authority rather than authority as truth.

  • Pardon me for not realizing what you were asking. I'm well-aware of the difference between "nationality", "race", & "ethnicity"....but sometimes people use "nationality" when they really mean "race" or "ethnicity" - & I thought that's what you were doing here. I assumed that you & everyone else knew that Dawes was born in America, & that her American roots reaches back generations - so that's why I just automatically assumed that you were talking about "race" instead of "nationality".

  • (contd.) Dawes' parents were born in America, & I'm assuming that at least most of her grandparents were born in America. For at least most of her family tree, Dawes' American roots run deep. If you go back in Dawes family tree, you'll probably find that the vast majority of her ancestors were either slaves from Africa or Native American Indians.

So Dawes' American roots run much deeper than someone like Ivana Hong - whose parents (?) come from Asia.

  • Interestingly, Dawes' American roots probably run deeper than even people like Alicia Sacramone or Chellsie Memmel. Most of Dawes ancestors have been here in America for at least 350 years - whereas Sacramone's or Memmel's family tree probably contains more recent immigrants from Italy (Sacramone), Germany (Memmel), & other places in Europe.

  • @svetaswan Dawes' paternal grandmother was full-blooded Native American and her paternal grandfather was half African American and German. So on her dad's side as far as her grandfather goes her lineage may trace back to Germany or Poland depending on where they migrated. But, for the most part her family roots run well through America. But I think it's funny how Dom is African American, Caucasian/German, and Native American and yet all 3 of her names are French: Dominique Margaux Dawes. lol.

  • I'm often interested in the heritage of people, too - & like you, my queries have been met with resistance. Many people do treat it like a "taboo" topic, & get rather defensive & uncomfortable. One reason may be that people assume that such information will be used to separate people or discriminate against people. People act like heritage is not a legitimate thing to be interested in. Other reasons for resistance may be deeper...a little too "complicated" to elaborate on here.

  • @svetaswan I meant that her grandfather was half African American, and half Caucasian/German.

  • @svetaswan Yeah, sometimes when you look at videos of her, her eyes are very Asian-like. Especially if you type in 95 US championships floor ef. There is an interview with Dominique right after she won the gold and her eyes look very squinted. lol.

  • Did she say Kerri Hill???

  • Her coach was Kelli Hill.

  • it did sound like that, didn't it?

  • some of you need to grow up and read more often, you would know what she's doing now.

  • I think Dawes is glad that she went to the '96 games.

  • I love the aussie commentator

    Dominique was awesome

  • That's Karen Tighe. She's a very good sports commentator with the ABC. That's her in the shot at the very beginning.

  • So much for college! lol!!

  • wait, what happened to her?

  • She went to the '96 games and won the team gold.

  • lol @ her personal life! she was too cute.

  • It's probably an Australian doing the voice-over because those Worlds were held in Australia.

  • This is from the Australian telecast that someone has posted on here.

  • I'm luvin Dawes.

  • what the heck its an aussie voice over!

  • thanks for posting!! don't normally see much on Dom...

  • exactly.
