@XxXPenrdXxX actually the original athlon was much better at gaming than the competing pentium3 and pentium4s at the time. But now of course intel is the leader in gaming cpu's. As far as servers i have seen many reviews where intel quad beats some opteron octo at the same clockspeed but i dont get into the server variants of intel and amd. I do know that amd only holds 20-30% of the server market while intel has almost double, the rest is mostly IBM and their server products.
@decimat777 The thing is most Windows Server things are optimized for intel but once you go in to linux its more about how many cores are running together at one point in time intel systems can have a max of 2 cpus in one mobo but amd systems have around 6 cpus in one mobo in servers(linux) its not about the higher clock speed or HT its about more core

i was once a intel user, my old P3 1.4 is still running strong at its "newer" home but since i replaced that with an "Another Melt Down" 2600+ and loved it, i'm now in the process of going amd X6 from my current 4800 dual. sure intel are great but it seems with them every new processor needs a different socket, whereas my current AM2+ AGP rig will apparently take a current quad no drama and i like the idea of possibly of upgrading cpu and gfx later without buying a whole new board and ram AGAIN!
Generally I have no qaulms with it, its just that AMD's jsut run too hot and use too much pwoer to be practical in a laptop. Im a gamer, my gaming laptop uses a Core i7 (not extreme), however my beast of a desktop (my payments are more than for my car) uses a Phenom II 1100T. I would have an aMd in my laptop, but my old HP had one and it would get too hot to sit on my lap, and i got 45mins of battery if I was lucky.
I have an core i7 processor on my alienware and amd on my custom pc but I do find amd more reliable and more worth the money. but i still love my alienware with i7.
End users need to pick up on the flow of things, its all about best bang for buck. I can't see myself enjoying an intel core i7 980 that costs 4 times the price of AMD's 1075t oc, but only performs 18% better. Choose whats best for yourself, no need to side with either company. We are what matter, not them :D
@kritzel789 you have the point but the best parts that they had same performance mostly and after like 30min-1h playing intel for sure wont have hours of chating power using wifi (on an airplane). If i not fail under stress the best Intel atom survives like 2 hours but UT(or like i dont know what they played) will have bad fps(without intel hd graphics or any dedicated gpu, just how i see their stuff) and amd like 30-45 minutes and better fps. Its a bullshit story but funny ad, enjoy it.

Also what is silly is that AMD Athlon64/Duron64 actually consume less power, but perform not as good as an Intel Core 2 Duo at equivalent clocks. However the i7 wins on both fronts.

I used AMD processored computers since '98, and no problems still yet today. Intel kept crashing my dad's laptop, and my laptop/my sister's... Intel Sucks!
AMD is a lot better, cooler (temperature wise), and cheaper. I used nVidia graphics for 5 years, and no problems, and I also used ATI graphics with no problems, just Intel graphics = 32MB Video Memory...
yeah, I think intel has better and more powerful cpu than amd, but the price is bigger too! and if to compare amd and intel middle-grade cpu's with the same price (about 100$) amd's cpu will show better perfomence.
I can't wait until AMD's up and coming Bulldozer core due out in 2011. It will require a new socket though, so i assume the AM3\AM2+ platforms are coming to an end in terms of future processor compatiblity with AMD's next generation K11 architecture.

Overall, using the results above, Intel is better at performance, while AMD is better at price and power consumption. I use an i7 920 for my desktop and an Athlon II M300 on my laptop. It all depends on what you need.

just got a laptop with an Intel Core 2 Duo. this computer is freaking fast. nicest computer i have ever owned. cant wait to get halo. it's gonna rock!
and AMD also gets hotter than Intel's CPU's. take my brothers for instance, he has an AMD Turion dual core and the room is only warm when his laptop is running and its blowing out hot air through the vents (which is all the time when running). my mom's 600 MHz pentium 3 runs better than my AMD sempron which is 1.81 GHz.
nice, but dont forget to take into consideration that your amd sempron is clocked 1.2GHz faster and probably has a higher voltage, thus providing more heat.
which the more heat means less performance. oh and before i reinstalled XP on it, when i closed out a program, my CPU usage went up to 98% just to close a window! (windows explorer)
well, I've got news for you. A heatsink in a laptop generally has a small surface area, causing the processor to heat up to a much higher level than the equivalent desktop model. So the air blowing out of a laptop vent may very well be more hot than a comparable desktop!
well i have am Intel Laptop and it doesnt blow out hot air like my brothers. there are videos showing that when the heat sinks are off the processors, AMD's go up in smoke and the Intels survive. so when your heat sink malfunctions, dont come crying to me when the smoke detectors go off
You know what's funny - you're right. There are videos which show AMD processors literally catching fire when the heatsink was removed, where the intel shuts off. Too bad though those videos are of 8 year old designs - no AMD64 processor will burn from heatsink failure - they have thermal diodes just like the intel ones do.
That's why I'm not dumb enough to unplug my cpu fan when my computer is running. With the newer fans, they usually don't go bad as long as you keep them clean of dust. That's why I take my computers out about once a month, and blow the dust out with a compressor, I make sure I do it with any computer I own, I don't care who makes the processor. And those videos are in the pentium 4 days, any newer cpu will smoke up, if there's no heat protection.
I'ved used AMD for the past 6 years now and I've been happy with it. I seriously have no qualms with intel either but I've had such good results with AMD that I just have not switched, it's the same with nvidia and ATI, use nvidia but no qualms with ATI. I mean it's really hard to go wrong with either of the two.
@bogart266 Depends what you use them for. Intel is in general better and despite the general notion is cheaper than AMD because it sells more chips. Intel always holds the most powerful chip on the market position and these chips are usually overpriced (I won't say it's not true). However the other chips cost as much as AMD. Sometimes AMD will sell a 6 core chip which performs worse than Intel's 4 thread chips but because it's 6 vs 4 people assume AMD will outperform.

Stop being so old afshion dude. You were right a year ago, now more than half the games use more than 2 cores. In fact unreal tournament uses 4 cores and 4 threads and that engine is used quit alot. Anyways i doesn't matter intel's i5 750 is on the sweet spot now. songle thread and multi.
Yeah I understand that but not all games can use more than 2 cores wolfenstien can. you have to make sure the game has a Multi-core enhanced label on it :) yeah but triple cores and normal quads do fine why spend so much money on a new board regardless whether it be i5 or i7 or i9 in the coming years :)
My q8200, though not the best intel quad core, outstrips nearly every AMD quad core in terms of processing speed and overclocking. I used to think that AMD were for "real" gamers, and in fact they used to be. But intel got smart...
I am not afraid about I5 "killing" my CPU as I know it is pure BS. I5 is a shitty product that succeeded in fooling people like you only because of Intel's smart marketing and bribing of the reviewer sites. Over the night, once I7-competitive AMD Phenom II's were now below some shitty I5's that those reviewers even had to put above their own precious I7's beacuse they had to make them look better at a certain price point.

AMD is good for keeping the prices down and progressing CPU architecture... and they just so happen to have an extremely good lineup of 45nm Phenom II quad-cores right now for a great price that are definitely comparable to Intel's lineup. AMD is just a rip off of Intel every time they just to copy them they fail. They like to make clone versions of intels processors but they just cant because they use third party parts. There are more i7 motherboards on all the sites combined than amd2. you are just saying this because you are an amd fan. Everyone i know and saw on fourms had problems with overheating and performance with overclocking than intel.
thats because intel has a fail safe to there cpus, if the cpu starts to over heat they will cut there performance down to as low as 75% where as amd wont, thats why amd is a better overclocking computer but yes it does run the risk of burning up, but if your smart and know how to keep things cool, like with a peltier cooler then overheating wont happen.
also i find this ad funny because intel cpus use more power and it doesnt matter as much about cpu consumtion than it does battery life.
even the intel cpu cooler is easier to install. Intel is the first to come out with Wimax for laptops and run more efficient. Amd will try to copy of of that and intel will come out with something new. Also amd computers get outdated quicker than intel. My friends pentium 4 still runs alot of things well while his amd only lasted him 3 yaers and it actually overheated.
There is no evidence to suggest they break easier.... and longevity is more in the eye of the beholder than anything else.

Intel is labled at 130w not 165w. And it uses that. overclocked it uses about 165w

@kritzel789 you have the point but the best parts that they had same performance mostly and after like 30min-1h playing intel for sure wont have hours of chating power using wifi (on an airplane). If i not fail under stress the best Intel atom survives like 2 hours but UT(or like i dont know what they played) will have bad fps(without intel hd graphics or any dedicated gpu, just how i see their stuff) and amd like 30-45 minutes and better fps. Its a bullshit story but funny ad, enjoy it.

Also what is silly is that AMD Athlon64/Duron64 actually consume less power, but perform not as good as an Intel Core 2 Duo at equivalent clocks. However the i7 wins on both fronts.

I used AMD processored computers since '98, and no problems still yet today. Intel kept crashing my dad's laptop, and my laptop/my sister's... Intel Sucks!
AMD is a lot better, cooler (temperature wise), and cheaper. I used nVidia graphics for 5 years, and no problems, and I also used ATI graphics with no problems, just Intel graphics = 32MB Video Memory...

I can't wait until AMD's up and coming Bulldozer core due out in 2011. It will require a new socket though, so i assume the AM3\AM2+ platforms are coming to an end in terms of future processor compatiblity with AMD's next generation K11 architecture.

and AMD also gets hotter than Intel's CPU's. take my brothers for instance, he has an AMD Turion dual core and the room is only warm when his laptop is running and its blowing out hot air through the vents (which is all the time when running). my mom's 600 MHz pentium 3 runs better than my AMD sempron which is 1.81 GHz.

well, I've got news for you. A heatsink in a laptop generally has a small surface area, causing the processor to heat up to a much higher level than the equivalent desktop model. So the air blowing out of a laptop vent may very well be more hot than a comparable desktop!

well i have am Intel Laptop and it doesnt blow out hot air like my brothers. there are videos showing that when the heat sinks are off the processors, AMD's go up in smoke and the Intels survive. so when your heat sink malfunctions, dont come crying to me when the smoke detectors go off

You know what's funny - you're right. There are videos which show AMD processors literally catching fire when the heatsink was removed, where the intel shuts off. Too bad though those videos are of 8 year old designs - no AMD64 processor will burn from heatsink failure - they have thermal diodes just like the intel ones do.

That's why I'm not dumb enough to unplug my cpu fan when my computer is running. With the newer fans, they usually don't go bad as long as you keep them clean of dust. That's why I take my computers out about once a month, and blow the dust out with a compressor, I make sure I do it with any computer I own, I don't care who makes the processor. And those videos are in the pentium 4 days, any newer cpu will smoke up, if there's no heat protection.

I'ved used AMD for the past 6 years now and I've been happy with it. I seriously have no qualms with intel either but I've had such good results with AMD that I just have not switched, it's the same with nvidia and ATI, use nvidia but no qualms with ATI. I mean it's really hard to go wrong with either of the two.

@bogart266 Depends what you use them for. Intel is in general better and despite the general notion is cheaper than AMD because it sells more chips. Intel always holds the most powerful chip on the market position and these chips are usually overpriced (I won't say it's not true). However the other chips cost as much as AMD. Sometimes AMD will sell a 6 core chip which performs worse than Intel's 4 thread chips but because it's 6 vs 4 people assume AMD will outperform.

I am not afraid about I5 "killing" my CPU as I know it is pure BS. I5 is a shitty product that succeeded in fooling people like you only because of Intel's smart marketing and bribing of the reviewer sites. Over the night, once I7-competitive AMD Phenom II's were now below some shitty I5's that those reviewers even had to put above their own precious I7's beacuse they had to make them look better at a certain price point.

AMD is good for keeping the prices down and progressing CPU architecture... and they just so happen to have an extremely good lineup of 45nm Phenom II quad-cores right now for a great price that are definitely comparable to Intel's lineup. There's really no reason to be biased; just get whichever one you want.

This is untrue... Most Intel laptops have underpowered graphics processor courtesy of Intel. AMD have always better GPU but more power hungry.

While the i7's currently are better than the phenom II's... they are vastly more expensive...
The I7's require a new MOBO and NEW RAM, while the Phenom II work on all the cheap and tested am2+ boards allowing you to save hundreds .
These hundreds mean you can get a better board, more memory and a superior GPU.

thats because intel has a fail safe to there cpus, if the cpu starts to over heat they will cut there performance down to as low as 75% where as amd wont, thats why amd is a better overclocking computer but yes it does run the risk of burning up, but if your smart and know how to keep things cool, like with a peltier cooler then overheating wont happen.
also i find this ad funny because intel cpus use more power and it doesnt matter as much about cpu consumtion than it does battery life.

even the intel cpu cooler is easier to install. Intel is the first to come out with Wimax for laptops and run more efficient. Amd will try to copy of of that and intel will come out with something new. Also amd computers get outdated quicker than intel. My friends pentium 4 still runs alot of things well while his amd only lasted him 3 yaers and it actually overheated.
