  • captivating song.

  • Started singing this to my son this morning and had to look it up!! Played it half a dozen times so far :D

  • Roger Hills always considered this the most difficult song he has ever had to play..the original drum solo was edited out of the live footage

  • Tony Hiller always gives a good word about Roger Hills when his name comes up in conversation. Fabulous song!

  • @saveyourkisses4me my comment was to insert a little humor

  • Quite odd for a pop song three four timing through the vocals with bit of four four in the instrumental. Played it for a while with my band and found it threw the dancers off. Try it, count the signature through the instrumental and you will see what I mean.

  • אחלה שיר ישןחדש תמיד מגניב איילון אילון

  • judgedreadmusic

  • @judgedreadmusic I used to know Judge Dread in the 70's. He used to buy many singles from my record stall down in Medway Kent.

  • I imagine this to have been screened on Pebble Mill at 1. Brilliant footage. Evocative.

  • bet Paul Mcartny wishes he could have writen this lovely song but sincere and tastfull unlike todays pop balads

  • remember listening to this on a transistor radio when it came out sat on a wall waiting for my girlfriend to turn up...played this couple of times other day and my 10 year old daughter loves it..great song..lovely memories

  • This was a medium hit all the way down in NZ - love it.

  • I too have fond memories of this song. as it does evoke some fantastic memories off all the innocence of childhood. I am approaching 50 now and this song for me is like shutting my eyes and looking at a thousand happy photos. It is obvious that this song is very special to many others too by some of these comments, and may it long bring them comfort. Well done lads! Great song!

  • This beautiful song brings back loving memories of a hot summer of in Devon England - Thank you for sharing this with us.....

  • Psychedelia doesn't have to be electric distorted guitars.Classic.

  • I can remeber waiting for the train from Prestatyn back to Manchester, and this was on the juke box. I was just a little girl, but wow, this song is always in my heart xx

  • I was 10 years old 1971 now i''m 50

  • Great record. Unique. :)

  • Ahh.. memories. Just lovely.

  • Margfleming - What a beautiful comment, nobody can take away your memories always treasure them.

  • Julian Phillips used to sing this to my son Morgan whenever he cried as a baby. Morgan adored Julian, but we lost touch after he moved to Australia. Makes me cry to remember really happy loving times. thankyou

  • One of the many disguises of Tony Burrows who happened to appear on T.O.T.P. 3x on the one programme

  • Proper song to remind you of being a kid.

  • i believe the drummers name is Harry Oldfield. Great song

  • This is the first song I have memories of hearing ever-thought kings were real then- video made me laugh tho.

  • Comment removed

  • that song is definitely about me! xDDDDDDDD

  • fantastic oldie

  • I remember being under the bedclothes with my transistor radio listening to this as the 'Power Play' on Radio Luxembourg 208. Great melody but daft lyrics!

  • loved this back then . i was just getting into music.. thanks for this.. heard it today on bbc radio2 .. top song.

  • 4 people are DEFINITELY anti-monarchists...

  • 1971 I remember it like it was yesterday...well maybe not yesterday

  • just amazing - I soooooooo love it :)

  • Beats me how 4 ppl disliked this. Each to their own!

  • @Stemax1960 It's a classic, and I like it, a lot.

  • @Stemax1960 The royalty 'thing' is a let down, though.

  • @phil1958uk ..foget royalty its all about when you are a kid not king...

  • I love it,brilliant song.Didnt know David Koresh played drums on this.

  • Love it

  • I feel the lyrics to this song are good, but not timeless, as royalty gets more unpopular with time. The tune however, IS good, and IS timeless. But needs different lyrics, (and title), to become a 'better song'.

  • It is a lighthearted pop song for gods sake, it wasn't meant to have a deeper meaning, it is not a political statement, it does not need anything to make it a better song, suggesting that it would be improved by altering it is an incredibly misguided view, in common with those people who have altered the words to Baa Baa Blacksheep or have made "politically correct" alterations to Enid Blyton books, Utter nonsense

  • F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C-!

  • this is the essence of my London memories 1970-71, oh I wish I could go back to those days... just for an hour...;-) thanks for posting this great song, still makes me shiver!

  • I love that song , I would love to go back to those days . Thanks for putting it on .

  • My Mum used to sing and dance to this song with my brother when he was 3 or 4. I have just sat and cried my eyes out.

Martin died last year and I miss him so much.

thank you for posting this lovely song.

  • אז רגע, מי המקור??

  • @lavidaesbella8

    הם

  • מעדיף את המקור ולא את שלמה ארדי

  • אההה הם עשו קאבר לשלמה ארצי!!!!!

  • LOL

  • LOL

  • maoztsur

    זה נקרא קאבר.... O____O

  • Great

  • classic song old memories:)

  • my first 45 love the nostalgia of it all

  • JUST AWESOME

  • This song used to really to upset as a child. I loved it and at the same time it made me want to cry, and I never understood why. I do now.

  • Fantastic,I love it.

  • ahhh.. fond memories of the early 1970s.... brings tears....

  • RIP Forever Pete Nelson. We loved you mate....

  • look what a nice version for this song

    watch?v=ZyWuUYxurwU

  • look what a nice version for this song:

    watch?v=ZyWuUYxurwU&feature=related

  • i love this song, it's one of my favourites

  • שירים יפים

  • This always reminds me of my childhood when my mother played the LP on a Sunday and would hum this as she pottered around.

  • Great song - of course, written by professional songwriters helps a lot. But White Plains were another (there are many) band cobbled together to capitalise on a studio produced recording. Tony Burrows - the best voice in popular music but never got all the credit he deserved. At one time he was lead singer in half the "top ten" Top of the Pops - with "bands" miming away to studio records they had never heard of s week or two before...

  • beautiful,haunting,klezmer(10)

  • WONDERFULL!!!

  • Magic!

  • This is such a beautiful song...and i agree with Lyonfrance many great memories as well...

  • beautiful, understated genius.

  • God ! What unexpected and lovely look back ... 39 years earlier !

Sorting out things this week, I find a full box of old records ... I thought lost !

Among them " When You are a King " by White Plains ... and opening You Tube ... just as quickly ... I immediately recognize this melody, and I remember this song ... I loved & bought in Clevedon, Somerset, England ... that July 71.

    What a good song !

    What a nice melody !

    What a sweet dream, being a King ? ... someday !

    At least pretending !!!

  • Teenage memories of a nice stay back to my mind ... once again ...through songs I heard there !

Like in this song, aren't caring Mums ...

" Royal Gifts " to their children, those teaching them ... always to look their best, to be well-groomed ... to get self-confidence ? And to look after themselves .

Aren't a lot of sons ... a little bit like " Kings " ... in their mothers' eyes and minds ?

This beautiful song makes me feel particularly nostalgic ... maybe, because of its tune ?

    March 10.

  • BEYOND IT,S TIME JUST AWESOME

  • I remember the late, great Kenny Everitt when he was a radio DJ saying that this was his No1 favourite. This moving melancholy makes it one of my favourites too. Beautiful.

  • So glad to find this, I loved it....

  • Who marked my comment as spam?

If you don't think Pixie Lott's song sounds at least a bit like this(Are you deaf?),then reply to my comment and say so. I won't get upset and swear at you,I'll just tell you you're wrong. :)

I do think more people take notice of a comment that has been marked as spam than a single comment among hundreds,so you probably did me a favour. Thanks!

  • Classic, love this song.

  • beautiful song

if you want to listen to the hebrew version, copy this to the search bar:

    בשבילה אתה מלך העולם

    choose the first result.

    it's also nice.

  • thank you so much i love it in ivrit x

  • I was a kid when this bittersweet tune hit the charts, and it always reminds me of a girl I had a crush on way back then.

  • This song's rhythm is nuts. And the chorus has the most 3-centric meter I've ever heard.

  • Excuse my ignorance, but what the hell is a 3-centric meter when its at home?

  • Just count the beats. It's in a 3/4 meter with triplets, and one repeated melodic phrase (the chorus has two) has 9 bars. Basically one phrase's rhythm goes like this:

    xxx xxx xxx

    xxx xxx xxx

    xxx xxx xxx

When every x also a triplet. It's almost occultist.

  • Maxchaplin you are a real ignoramus. Are you trying to say that every decent song has to have a regular meter? Ever heard The Stranglers, Golden Brown? Try working that rhythmn out....or would you like to legislate that every song has to be in 4/4 time? try thinking before posting you sad git.

  • Did I imply odd meters are wrong? No. Then STFU noob.

  • love this song dave

  • The first time I heard this song I was 6, that 1972 year, in Mexico. Wonderful song!

  • Wonderful song - it's quite beautiful. I love it. I remember it being released and it was being played all the time here in Ireland. What great memories...

  • This must be one of the most beautiful songs of all time along with Judy Collins Both Sides Now

  • brilliant - heard it Sunday morning while having a peaceful bike ride - as most comments suggest a real innocence but hits the spot!

  • Best record they made end of !!! One of Sir Terrence of Wogans faves too!!! No13 in 1971.Pax to all from Ian Smith.Xxx.

  • Interesting video. Not sure I'm familiar with this group. Don't recall ever hearing them here in the US. Thanks for sharing and introducing them to me.

    Regards, Ed

  • Im going to have to stop watching youtube. The carpets showing signs of dampness.

  • This is an iconic tune for my personal history. My mum bought me this single (M.O.T.R. with Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dum) on the B-side, on the surprise label. Like velocet1976 it takes me back to the the happier days. Long live nostalgia and tunes like this.

  • A unique classic !

  • beautiful then beautiful now great post j vincent edwards

  • This is more than childhood memories...it was a favourite of my late mother & remember it so cuz she had a mix tape of all her singles & played it while she was ironing....!! Brings a tear to my eye..!

  • christmas present was a front loading red plastic record player that only played (& shredded) 45's. this record was the 3rd shredded after ,something happin- hermans hermits & yester me yester you yesterday-stevie wonder - doesn't ,mean it's bad though.

  • love the smiles between 1'21 and 1'30-you can almost hear the director shouting "SMILE".

and can the drummer be the same person as the young lad playing drums in the band in the film saturday night and sunday morning because he bloody looks like him!.

  • No, the drummer in sat nights sun morning is Pete Sillitoe ( brother of the films writer Alan Sillitoe )

The drummer in this clip is Roger Hills, but yes a see the similarity. I'll tell roger when I next see him !

No the band were not in good shape whilst shooting this clip.

A gig and a bender the night before saw to that !

    Regards, John, Nottingham.

  • What Memories, that must have been the best time ever to be a teenager. Ray.

  • Tears. Just tears.

    So beautiful.

    Greetings from the Netherlands.

  • yesyesyes!!.... this resonates me back to my scruffy, disordered, disoriented yet pure.poetic childhood...." as a child, I shot an arrow; it's still there, quivering" (Bruno Ganz : Wings Of Desire)

  • Yep. Not only is this probably the first record I ever owned, maybe from 1967, but Wings of Desire is one of my favourite movies ever.

"Why am I me, and not you?"

  • Fighting in the rain, with whatshiname; shoe-black on your face....god this is childhood in a beautiful essence!!

  • hi.went to your country twice in 90/91.love you dutch!

  • One of my favourite songs, love it!

  • the ultimate song

  • brilliant classic song !

  • Hi Mashpotatobrains it's useless information time.

The lead singer is a guy called Pete Nelson who, in the early sixties, played at my local Youth Club called the Breaks in Hatfield with his group Pete Nelson and the Travellers.

One of the songs they performed was called Mashed Potato.

I've also heard the slight similarity with the Pixie Lott song, but not enough to call the lawyers. They're both great songs.

  • Hi Peters Daughter has been chatting further back.regarding her dad and the band.worth a look.Regards.

  • Hey I'm still here checking in now and again. Good to see the posts are still coming thick and fast. Ems

  • Great song. Truely impeccable music. Nothing else to say.

  • one of my favorite songs.

    from 2:25, is it violins?

  • In a word "YES"!

  • Are you quite sure? It doesn't sound like a violin to me. I think it might be the accordion or the organ going up an octave or two.

  • Most definate Violins,my Father was a session musician on this and various other songs!

  • My sister bought this 45 back in the mid 70's sometime. Sad melody. Reminds me of England in the 70's and childhood. Left England in 85 so good memories. Great tune...

  • If any of you are interested, we have a radio station that plays music from the last 5 decades, here in Hull & East Yorkshire, especially on Saterday between 10am & 1.30pm. It's KCFM on 99.8fm. By the by I may be 31, but I prefer the golden oldies not the tripe that gets played to death on the other stations.

  • Twiglet09 nice and funny comment.making me smirk!!

  • A real lovely song, makes me think of my wonderful childhood. Sarahw59, just ignore them and enjoy what you like;-}

  • Errr...that was Pete Nelson on lead vocals. i should know, he was my old man!

  • Wow I LOVE this.. so good to hear it again..thank you.

  • Jesus fucking Christ!

  • this song makes me fell like a king

  • Tony Burrows on lead vocals

  • Correction time! Wasn't White Plains doing Tom TomTurnaround - was New World, had an abberation

  • Like most here, this song brought back primary school memories, found the tune and lyrics moving then, and still do now. Also the White Plains doing Tom Tom Turnaround does the same

  • Thought "Tom Tom Turnaround" was by New World, the Opportunity Knocks winners.... showing my age!

  • lovely song.Did i hear the singer sadl passed away some time last year?

  • Yes it was about 3.5 years ago now. He died of cancer. Pete Nelson (real name Lipscomb)

  • how old was he when this was made? And are the other lads still in touch?!

  • He must have been about 28 I guess. I still see the others now and again supporting Lee Memphis King (Elvis tribute act). Fantastic act by the way

  • They dont seem to come around here (Chester area)so wont get the chance to see them .I will have to make do with youtube.I went to see brian ferry once and had a shock when he came on stage. The last time i saw him was on a video with roxy music.Had to take all the mirrors out of the house!!
