  • I used to work at this cinema when it was called the Gaumont. This was back in the seventies when films like "Rocky" and "Carrie" were showing. The chief projectionist took me on a guided tour of what was left of the old place when it was one cinema/theatre. At this time, the old changing rooms were still there including the one the Beatles used in about 1965. There was also a flat on the roof where the assistant manager lived

  • what horrible shabby masking @3.41

  • Man, this must have been filmed AGES ago, it looks so different now, especially screen 1

  • Great vid - I'm 10 mins down the road from here! Really wish that Odeon B'mth would do a one off 80's week where they would use the old 'First Choice' reels and play some late night classic films like Aliens and Blade Runner.

Great vid - although I wish you'd lose that music.. I'd rather hear the machine noise than plinky guitars! lol ;)

    best. L

  • If you want to save these buildings now is the time - don't wait until they are sold to property developers.

  • DMBC are a dreadful council and this much loved local landmark was doomed on the day it was sold to Lazarus Properties. English Heritage turned down listing of the old Donny Gaumont because it had been tripled, some original features had been removed or compromised. The impressive art deco facade had been butchered and covered by a plain metal fascia in the late 1960s.

  • If a multiplex is built both of these buildings are doomed. At Doncaster a really outstanding former Gaumont Palace was closed by Odeon in April 2008 and has already been razed to the ground. by developers.

  • My wife and I enjoyed watching 'Bladerunner' here, when it was first released. It looked and sounded great.

  • It must have been the ABC, then, as the film was certainly on its original first run. Thanks for clearing that up. It STILL looked and sounded great though, even though it was at the other venue!

  • So, to get to screen 1 here, you have to traverse a very dark corridor which has a 1 sign similar to the one seen outside the entry corridor.

  • nice video Fred

  • MMMM ! curved screen ...

  • Thanks for sharing Fred. This screen looks a good traditional auditoria (albeit the seats look rather old and worn) with good screen size rather than a lacklustre shoebox that is typical of the Odeon circuit these days. I wonder how much longer those WallMart managers now running Odeon will keep both the Odeon and ABC open in Bournemouth before they build a new plex on some industrial site near the city? My sound is not working at present so forgive me if you mentioned this in the film.
