@BROOKS39- That's very interesting. Thanks. @mrbag60- You're soRIGHT. The Pretty Things should've been as big as The Rolling Stones. Their Midnight To Six Man is my favourite.
@merseymain Yes they should - I managed to touch Phil May's leather trousers, when he was sitten on the stage edge in Copenhagen last year I think it was ... but ... he never had eyes for me - either 15 years earlier to another concert in the open in CPH and neither when I was 13 in CPH!!!!!! Only Brian Pendleton had eyes for me hahahahah .. Sigh!
I visited 2120 South Michigan ave in June 2011. I came all the way from Australia to check out the bluesfest in Grant park. Thought I'd hop on a bus while I was there & check out the old Chess recording studios. I was discouraged on heading down that part of town by the locals as its a bit dodgy. It was closed when I got there due to bluesfest. Willie Dixons family is trying to get it up & going as a museum and recording studio again...
@BROOKS39 I just did a virtual tour on street view. It doesn't look *that* dodgy. Probably white folks (I'm white) telling you that. I used to live in Saint Louis and more than a few people in the white I mean west county would tell me it was dangerous down where the blues clubs are. Yeah certainly more dangerous than suburban malls, but really not that bad. Not like the hood or anything. And 2120 doesn't look like the 'hood' either. Soooo... meh. Glad you went anyway. Good on you.
@theshowmecanuck Yea... like I shouldn't have written that comment but that was the feedback I got. I loved Chicago. I actually felt safer walking around there at night then back home in Sydney!!
When Brian Jones was still the guiding force of the band you heard incredible bluesy gems like this. Not that i don't like some of their later stuff from the late-60's to late-70's as i this was the stuff i most remember from the am radio, but the early Stones imho were at their rockin' best for the first five albums. The Pretty Things, their sister band from Dartford, Kent were incredible as well.
@Kelly14UK, re: 2120's a gem. It's shortened from the original studio jam isn't it? Yes, the longer version is available on the American CD 12 x 5; on that collection, however, it is in stereo, and I prefer remastered mono for the early Stones material. Five By Five may even edge out the Beatles' Long Tall Sally as the greatest EP ever released; the quality and balance among the songs is practically perfect. The earlier Stones EP is wonderful as well. Thanks.
@signeWI28 Surprised to find that EPs weren't favored in America for some reason I can't fathom. Don't understand that. And you guys were okay about putting singles on albums. We kept our Penny Lanes and Paint it Blacks on 7" lol! Cheers.
@Kelly14UK, in the US, EPs were used basically to sell albums on the "installment plan." For me, the British catalog will always be the true presentation of material by the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. So, yes, you're correct. Thanks, Signe
Recorded on June 10 & 11, 1964. First released in the UK on the EP, Five by Five on August 14, 1964, then released in the US on the album 12x5 in October, 1964. There were two different versions of this song recorded during these sessions.
Bass: Bill Wyman Drums: Charlie Watts Guitar: Keith Richards Harp: Brian Jones Organ: Ian Stewart. Percussion: Mick Jagger
Love this song! One of there best Albums! And I say that because you can hear a few cracking sounds while its playing Gotta love a 33-1/3 LP Vinyl I remember my Dad taking me downtown Chicago to a few Jam Sessions and this was one of them! a great place to hang out and meet some cool Musicians....Hell I was about 13 yrs old Priceless !
i remember hearing this on a juke box in summer 1964 by the sea - it was such a beautiful summer and my first love, and this song was the icing on the cake for me.
@DudleyMod they might have put out some shit over the years allright, nevertheless this and other early recording show their capacaty as a fine rhythm `n`blues band and according to them they never wanted to be more than that..............
@bluesbuster01 you've just emphasised the point I was making. ......why when they could be this good didnt they maintain the standard instead of farming out some of the rubbish they did/have done. Like I said, cracking track though.
@DudleyMod allright DudleyMod, allright. since i´m not a lot younger than the average stones member themselves after "exile on main street" (probaly their last good album) i kind of lost track (interest) of what came afterwards but since i´m into time travelling anyway i still enjoy listening to albums like "the rolling stones now" and "jamming with edwards" for example. thanks for your comment + all the best
@mmandmm9 hallo there, one of the damned best rhythm `n` blues recordings ever made by a british band in their early days. thanks for the info on the address 2120 south michigan................
such a pity that you took the short version of 2120 south michigan avenue: it lacks the brilliant guitar solo
even more pity that you took the mono versions of these two songs
there are excellent stereo versions of these songs on the album "12 x 5"

Liked everything about Empty Heart, and that strange drum beat by Watts. 2120's a gem. It's shortened from the original studio jam isn't it?

Brian will always be the first stone. he was the first professional musician in the combo. he became a colorist cause he left the game to his band.
