When you're an actor who happens to be gay, if you have talent, you should be able to play a heterosexual character convincingly (like Scott Thompson). Here, I just get the feeling that he's a gay guy trying (unconvingly) to act straight. I like his voice but just don't beleive in the character he's trying to play.

Can't help it but I am reminded of Ricky Martin with John Barrowman's interpretation of this song. Hugh Jackson has a more powerful, macho feel to his version.... just my opinion...
@mikakarl11 John Barrowman has had extensive concert tours as well as having originally made his name on Broadway and in the West End long before Torchwood.
What people need to realize is that he's at a concert, not actually acting during a show. Also, he is not "overacting". There was a live audience, and you have to physically do things bigger because they're far away, so they can't see as well. We're seeing an up-close camera view of a performance meant to be seen even in the far back of the audience.
@CossetteDAuvergne Couldn't have said it better - filming any sort of theatre performances often makes them look staged and a little fake, even though from the audience on the same night they looked very real. It's why acting for stage and film is so different - on camera, the audience sees the little emotions, whereas on stage even subtlety has to be 'larger' in order for the whole audience to be able to see it. And like you say - he's at concert, not the show itself :)
i love JB but he's not a patch on Hugh. this is just too melodramatic.
an sorry, i know he is gay. i got gay friends, its not a problem, but he should be able to play the role straight and not camp. the character is neither gay or effeminate so john should play it that way. he's done it before with other characters.

John is a great singer and perfromer dont get me wrong - -but Hugh is better as in overall performance - singing may not be as good, but not far behind - and delivery is superior. (IMO)
There's a lot of comparison in the comments here and there with the version of hugh Jackman. I like them both, they are very different because the two put the attention in two different things. You can see (hear) very well that JB takes a lot of care in the sound emission and in the quality of the voice that comes out, while HJ is more focused on the acting and body language.
In both cases it is a very conscious choice and anyway both give a very satisfying rendition of the piece.
The thing I love the most about John Barrowman is that he's a refined gay man, not like Elton John, and I've yet to find anyone who hates him or calls him a faggot and shit...the media has to show more of him, as a GOOD role model for LGBT teens...seriously, it's him or Lady Gaga, and my parents know which one they want me to be a fan of.

Eh, he's far too theatrical for my liking. It's almost like he's trying to show off himself over doing the song justice. It's like he's trying to seduce the audience or something, ugh.
He's theatrical for a reason, though. In the theater, they're taught to play to the back of the house so actors' movements are usually a little over the top. TV acting and theater acting are very, very different things.

There's a difference between making your movements clear and distinct and trying to show yourself off to the crowd. He's not doing either the song or the role justice acting the way he is. Again, look at Hugh Jackman, his movements are very clear and distinct yet they make sense and they have a motive, he's focused on doing the song justice, not showing off to the crowd.

The thing I love the most about John Barrowman is that he's a refined gay man, not like Elton John, and I've yet to find anyone who hates him or calls him a faggot and shit...the media has to show more of him, as a GOOD role model for LGBT teens...seriously, it's him or Lady Gaga, and my parents know which one they want me to be a fan of.

@Dawning0angel I know exactly what you mean!! Sure Gaga accepted an award and said it was for 'the gays' but this man is an inspiration to be who you are and love every second of it!! Gaga makes a spectacle of herself, but John... He is on a whole other level. Refined is almost an understatement.

Hugh and John are both awesome i cant really decide between them. I absolutely love john much more but i kinda have to say (sorry john) but Hugh's version is better.

Have now listened to this as well as Michael Ball's and Hugh Jackman's versions.
And I haven't changed my mind - Michael's is the best by far!!!

I like the conceptual interpretation of his Joe, but he doesn't have the vocals to support Webber. He hits his vowels quite oddly, and it all just falls flat in the end.

Barrowman starts too loud and too emphatic, leaving himself nowhere to go in the song's climax apart from his trademark belting. Jackman's twice the singer and ten times more the actor than this botoxed ham.

Eh, he's far too theatrical for my liking. It's almost like he's trying to show off himself over doing the song justice. It's like he's trying to seduce the audience or something, ugh.

He's theatrical for a reason, though. In the theater, they're taught to play to the back of the house so actors' movements are usually a little over the top. TV acting and theater acting are very, very different things.

There's a difference between making your movements clear and distinct and trying to show yourself off to the crowd. He's not doing either the song or the role justice acting the way he is. Again, look at Hugh Jackman, his movements are very clear and distinct yet they make sense and they have a motive, he's focused on doing the song justice, not showing off to the crowd.
