All wars are tragic, but perhaps the Vietnam War is more tragic than most because the enemy won the war, our political and military leadership was so dishonest about the war in Vietnam and waged it in such a corrupt way, and and so many of our young men were killed, wounded, or otherwise damaged by their time serving in Vietnam, and of course the violent deaths of millions of Vietnamese men, women, and children who wanted nothing more than to be left alone to live their lives in peace.

This war is the only war to be measured in body count instead of land taken. You must understand that in order to see why its not counted as a loss. That is also why films always depict soldiers counting dead VC and NVA. We than trained the SVC and left the country. The numbers are all that mattered to the US. 1.1 million NVA and VC killed. 58,178 Americans. R.I.P. to all.
@Aesop5050 I didnt have enough space to finish... the other reason it was not considered a loss as most people don't know we had signed a peace treaty before leaving South Vietnam. After we were long gone the North broke this treaty and invaded South Vietnam. The evacuations you see were just that of the embassy and high ranking South Vietnam officials. This peace treaty also lead to the release of our P.O.W's before the north took the South. Peace with honor.

How I hated that war. My entire childhood it loomed as the maw that would one day gobble me as it had my brother. He came home alive but not by any means in any condition to participate in the "American Dream", rather to live a nightmare. He was given a BCD for drugs. @toadster58 The reason we technically do not count this as a loss is because in which the war was fought. Seek and Destroy. This war is the only war to be measured in body count instead of land taken. You must understand that in order to see why its not counted as a loss. That is also why films always depict soldiers counting dead VC and NVA. We than trained the SVC and left the country. The numbers are all that mattered to the US. 1.1 million NVA and VC killed. 58,178 Americans. R.I.P. to all.

@Aesop5050 I didnt have enough space to finish... the other reason it was not considered a loss as most people don't know we had signed a peace treaty before leaving South Vietnam. After we were long gone the North broke this treaty and invaded South Vietnam. The evacuations you see were just that of the embassy and high ranking South Vietnam officials. This peace treaty also lead to the release of our P.O.W's before the north took the South. Peace with honor.

How I hated that war. My entire childhood it loomed as the maw that would one day gobble me as it had my brother. He came home alive but not by any means in any condition to participate in the "American Dream", rather to live a nightmare. He was given a BCD for drugs. And when they offered him amnesty he turned them down. He was so disgusted by the conflict, by war in general. I grew up thinking I would be drafted to Viet Nam. Grew up with that.

All we have to do is to destroy one small piece of land, and the war will be over forever. No great loss of life on either side, like what's been these past 10 years.
