I know that Swedes in general hate Norwegians (for whatever sad reason), but I ( a Norwegian) absolutely love Jussi (a swede). In my opinion the greatest tenor ever! Thank you, Jussi, for what you gave us. I will never forget you. One day I will visit your hometown and put flowers on your grave. You certainly have deserved that.
Thanks to primobaritono for putting this excellent, not often heard, Strauss up on YOu Tube. I share his and other commenters below -- enthusiasm for JB's artistry and singing.
I admire the restraint and respect demonstrated in Primobaritono s words. possibly the greatest tenor in the history of music. I am mush more inclined to speak in absolutest terms. I call Bjorling the greatest tenor ever, and probably the most perfect singer ever. And I say this without equivocation. But I also say it with respect.
In a long life I have heard many fine tenor voices. None has given me the same thrill and real pleasure that Bjorling delivered in the opera house. Critics have complained that he was a stick on stage but I would beg to differ. And that voice!!! It came at you like a golden shaft of light with diction and phrasing to match. He is utterly irreplaceable.
@stuartliff tell us more about wonderful Jussi...where did you see him? What about that 'small voice" issue (which I don't care...I don't see how he couldn't carry...but neither did he sing like he was going off to war!).
I'm heartbroken I was born too late to hear him live!
i don't know if anyone else sees this but there's a child-like quality about Jussi that's touching to witness. In the same La Boheme clip mentioned earlier, there's a scene where Jussi, w/unchecked eagerness, starts to mouth Renata's lines- like a kid. He cracks me up, it's endearing. I've seen many clips of him performing & it's always the same- w/out ego, unaware of form, single-mindedly singing his heart out. I'm sure this is part of the reason why he's able to deeply affect his audiences.
Your observation reminds me of a comment Hans Hotter made about JB in his memoirs. He admired his singing greatly and was surprised when he finally met JB at how unpretentious he was, and almost shy.
Haha i hear u bro ). I don't get how ppl can admire the sincerity of his singing, yet think him unconvincing as an actor. Singing and gesturing can't help being interconnected i would think. For me it's not possible for the same person to come across as genuine in speech, yet false in expression. Anyway glad to hear u were pleased w/ the comment lol.
noonah08, I'm so pleased that you noticed that too. I've never understood why some say that Jussi couldn't act on the operatic stage. I've seen footage of him with Tebaldi in La Boheme, & the criticism is profoundly unjust. His acting is understated but sincere. People don't make wild gestures & facial expressions in real life, & for me, Jussi's acting reflcted that.
Oops i was suppose to reply here lol. Anyway here's a copy of my reply ): Haha i hear u bro ). I don't get how ppl can admire the sincerity of his singing, yet think him unconvincing as an actor. I collect old books on vocal production. Bjorlin's' secret is very easy to see. Almost total relaxation of everything except the diaphragm. Watch the cheeks , they are like jello. This sounds easy to most but obviously takes training or innate skill because if otherwise these folks would be all over the place. I also believe these folks exist but the musicality talent is lacking simply because not all folks are gifted in the same areas. Everyone has talents that they do not develop
madisonelectronic, like all great things, Jussi's voice is a superb example of the art that conceals art. But don't be fooled by his exterior relaxation into thinking that what he does is simple. A lot of register development & years of scales have gone into sounding that easy & natural. Like Dolly Parton once said; 'It takes a hell of a lot of money to look this cheap!' - Bjorling's singing only looks relaxed to the observer, because all the correct vocal muscles are working very hard indeed.
No "possibly" about it....he was and IS the greatest tenor in the history of music. Thanks so much for this clip as well as for your other contributions!
