OK, I could probably build this, given enough time and patience, and I understood what you were talking about with the shift register etc even though my degree is computer science not E.E., and I definitely get that having to use your brain to solve arithmetic problems helsp to wake you up due to the mental stimulation.

Having said all that though, I fear my emergency OFF switch would take the form of a 5LB sledge hammer strategically stored right next to the alarm clock.

if u want a good idea. just put ur alarm clock on the other side of ur room so u have to walk to it to shut it off and get a timer and put it on a lamp so every morning the light turns on at the same time.

thats a bit painful. how about something simpler that would invoke cognitive thinking. i like the idea of a sprouting puzzle, where u would have to reassemble the pieces. or even easier... put the alarm clock on the other side of the room. by the time u make it back to bed, ur already up.
