Well I think you would get fired if you said, "I'm afraid of heights when black people in African garb are up there with me", or "I'm afraid of crowds when they're jewish". And anyway, if a muslim extreemist wanted to blow up a plane, do you really think they'd be stupid enough to try and get onto a plane with bombs "in their garb"? No, they'd be dressed just like you.
But he's scared because there is a lot of anti-Muslim sentiments in the world right now and that fear seems to be perpetuated by mainstream media... it's a complicated issue.
Well, you won't get fired for saying you're afraid of heights or that you're claustrophobic, but it would probably be a different story if you said something like "black people make me nervous" or "I'm worried that the Jews are going to try to blow up the plane". It's not about firing somebody just for having a fear, it about firing someone for having a fear that could compromise his ability to give proper service to the airline's customers (and not keeping his fool mouth shut about it).
What he said is stupid, bigoted, and irrational, but he should not have been fired for it.

I fly for work every month or three and have felt concerned about passengers wearing Muslim garb.
A Muslim and an ex-Muslim I know both say they are a bit unnerved by other Muslims on planes.
A friend who looks Arab so much that Arabs he doesn't know will start speaking Arabic to him. He says he wouldn't mind being searched every time he flies if everybody who looks Arab was scrutinized more thoroughly.
I think it will be a while before people can feel comfortable in that situation.
Are you saying we should all have zippers on our heads????????? That offends my delicate sensibilities towards my innocent Asian counterparts... Be warned, I know Kung-Fu and 50 other deadly words ;P
Funny how America is letting the local muslims do whatever they want and attacks anyone who says one bad thing about them while killing over a million civilians in Iraq...
Do you really believe that a "terrorist" would be dressed as a Muslim? No of course not - it is racial profiling! First it was extremist Muslim who conducted the attacks on 9-11. His "reaction" is based on a pre-conceived idea of who Muslims are even though the vast majority are not terrorist or would not act in a way to threaten anyone! Of course he would say it on O'Reilly. O'Reilly is the king a racial profiling! If anything, the people in garb are the ones who we should not worry about!
@volound "its no coincidence that people without guns dont shoot people. the same can be said of non-muslims and not committing acts of terrorism." --> The implication you made being that only muslims commit acts of terrorism.
LOL Wut? You've been hanging out with SisterSunshine and VonHelton too much. Oh look, and there she is attaching her latest Fox News wannabe propaganda to this video. How does it feel carrying the political water for a right wing, anti secular Christian that would string your Atheist ass up in a heart beat if she had half the chance?
being nervous of muslims "in their garb" is irrational, and immature.
TFTB, i love you brother, but this vid is just plain wrong. you honestly think its not insulting to them? you honestly saying if someone on the radio said everyone with a rosary made them nervous about possible terrorism, that Catholics wouldn't get their knickers in a twist? or if they said "hasidic jews make me nervous when i see them on planes in their garb", you think they wouldn't get sacked? c'mon man.
@gothatfunk a muslim "in their garb" is probably statistically something of the magnitude of 50,000% more likely to blow up the plane than a non-muslim who isnt in garb. the guy probably realizes that and got scared.
its no coincidence that people without guns dont shoot people. the same can be said of non-muslims and not committing acts of terrorism.
@volound frankly, i think if a muslim were intent on commiting an act of terrorism, they'd be trying to draw as little attention to themselves as possible.
you conveniently ignore the point of my comment, that being that if you said something like that about a different faith group on NPR, you'd be just as likely to get fired.
@gothatfunk like what? "im really scared about working in this abortion clinic because of crazy christian fundies that have blown them up?"
i doubt it. i havent looked into this particular incident, but i absolutely guarantee that he was fired because muslims phoned in and complained he was being racist. it would be typical.
as a former DJ on radio for ten years, i can tell you that even most commercial stations go out of their way to come across as "faith neutral". commercial stations may risk losing advertisers by offending listeners if they so wish. a publicly funded station is in a different position.
the chances are, the terrorist who is going to blow up the plane is going to dress differently to fit in.
Also, forgot about the IRA? ETA? C18? NF? BNP? EDL? All commit what can be considered terrorist attacks and have members who either have done or have bee grabbed by the police beforehand.
Its no coincidence that anti terrorist forces get better after a big attack, and whoever gets in the first hit will be remembered, the others will not because they get caught.
@PhysicalConservative i didnt. you just assumed that guns are the only things that can shoot people. you made the same mistake you were going to accuse me of. making a "generalisation" and forgetting to explicitly state the negligible exception.
no shit. im not talking about what i said, im talking about what you understood me to have said, that is, what you understood my analogy to mean. and when you tried to understand my analogy you FAILED because you generalised. you failed in the same way you thought i failed only i expected some little retard to jump down my throat so i took precautions when i made the analogy.
@volound "a muslim "in their garb" is probably statistically something of the magnitude of 50,000% more likely to blow up the plane than a non-muslim who isnt in garb. the guy probably realizes that and got scared." - You talk some utter bollocks you know that? Next time you want to make up some probability statistics at least have a source of data that is mildly related to reality.
@volound - And just how many muslims in garb have there been that blew up aeroplanes? I doubt you even actually know or even have a rough idea. Which makes my point stand. You are talking utter bollocks.
@volound - Oh lord. You did it. The "you don't know me" retort... You do know that reply is one of the most stupid things anyone can say right? Piss poor effort if you ask me. Anything you don't like, just reply "you don't know me". Sign of an idiot. Anyway, not here for a fight. Like i said, i doubt that you even know or even have a rough idea. Your comment was purely conjecture which doesn't help anybody, neither muslim or anyone else for that matter. Which makes it completely pointless.
@volound which non-muslims are u speaking of: tim mcvay, the unibomber, joseph stack...Videla in Argentina, or Somoza in Nicaragua, Hitler also committed acts of terrorism...the problem here is I do not believe you know the definition of terrorism and for that I will state it here: the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce an individual, group of people or a state especially for political gain. meaning the Mafia is considered a terrorist organization..weren't most of them catholic?
@volound who doesn't rob banks to please god? the Mafia, the mafia doesn't only rob banks....as you can see I did not state religion in the definition of terrorism, I am stating the definition of terrorism only. I think people have recently been brainwashed to think terrorism is ONLY doing terror in the name of god...terrorism is terrorism, and the others I have mentioned all committed acts of terrorism in the name of their savior, god, fairy godmother, santa claus...whatever you like to call it
@volound Actually, I dont think a smart muslim would hijack or bomb a plane with islamic turbans or checkerboard cloth on their head (held on by a piece of black cord). How is he going to get past all the security, and the air marshals on the plane undercover would point him out immediately to watch if he did get past security. if a muslim was serious about causing harm like that, they'd likely get a clean cut hair-cut, wear a nice little fashionable American Eagle outfit, and then do the thing.
@runetang terrorists think like that, non-terrorists dont. id say a non-terrorist would be more scared of a muslim that looks like osama bin laden than one wearing an american eagle outfit.
I remember going through customs in Canada a couple years ago and there was a sikh man in his turbin directly infront of me , then I turned around and there was a massive gap between me and the next people in the line about 2-3 meters a huge gap , some people just staring at this guy , but most just trying to avoid looking at him , he found it funny though that these people were all profiling him and had gotten it so completely wrong
Getting fired for voicing his concern or fear (no matter how idiotic it may be) should not conflict with a man's ability to produce legal tender. It really is becoming absurd!
Welcome to the illusion, of Freedom of Speech, marching soldierly away.
@EuphoricImpact You don't have freedom of speech when it comes to a job. You serve at the pleasure of your employer. I really wish people would learn what freedom of speech is, and more importantly, what it is not.
I agree with you Tommy but you gotta keep in mind that when you work for someone you are "an employee at will" and they have right to terminate you for almost anything. You never know its possible that they wanted to can that dude for a while and this just gave them a good reason to. But I do agree using that reason just makes them a bunch of cunt bags.
I'm the guy people see walking down the street and think "oh shit , something might happen"! unless they are a mugger, then they think "he hasn't got any money". you can get your ass pissed on just for admitting you are afraid.
thats the thing the people who are pissing on us for being afraid are also trying to make the world their way.
I think the way you fight it is exactly what you are doing - it starts with someone saying "Fuck you! I'm not changing for shit"!
tommy best thing you can do is fight the rekigious fucktards in your own country, the fasist christian fucktarded right wing fundamentalist christians.
@adolthitler you are a wanker, the problem in America isnt muslims ....its doctopr murderers, who think a doctor giving normal female reproductive medicin to women is murder, and who like the taliban try to stop it by terrorist tacticts sic murdering doctors ... do you fkn suport that adolthitler? if you do then you realy are a fkn hitler not only in name.
@tersse I do wank and that makes me a wanker. You its your attitude, and poor understanding. So you are saying there are no radical muslims in america? Were there any on or before 9/11? Their existence is not a problem?
Do you support literacy? Because it would be nice if you read things and understood them.
I understand that the guy was just being honest, I get it, but bare in mind that sometimes what someone says in public is gonna have an effect on their job. A bank teller, for instance, can't just pipe up and say "hey I'm afraid all the black guys in sunglasses that come in are gonna rob us" and expect no fallout. He *is* free to say what he wants but there are consequences.
Think about it though, a terrorist is probably *not* gonna be in some kind of garb that stands out in Western society.
It doesn't even have to be people who are different from you. If I'm walking down an empty abandoned street late at night, and see another white guy, with my same size, and my same build, I'm gonna be a little more alert, and a little cautious.
I took a flight from Manchester England to Bodrum Turkey one time. The people on the plane were about half muslim and half British people. I was nervous as hell....and NOT because of the British people.
I'm not nervous about Muslims I'm nervous for Muslims. You would be to if you had any sense of scale. But like most people in this country you're scared of your own shadow, and ready to swat at anything that moves. Point is this, your danger detector is broken. Don't feel bad you're not alone.
Heres the thing, lets say someone said they were afraid of black people do you think they should be fired? or at the very least apologize? same situation. he just shouldnt have said it.
hold on. your saying you choose what you believe? your an idiot. you do not choose to believe something, you just believe it, you can choose to pretend to believe it, but that is something different entirely. After that, no, it isn't different at all as they are both stereotyping, and profiling.
@TheAtheistWolf I believed in Santa clause at one time, but after i grew up, I chose not to believe in it because it was silly and foolish.
After what the media has shown, i think almost everyone gets a little uneasy when they see muslims on planes. Sure its sterotyping but he was telling his point of view. What he was scared of.... And btw i find it funny how people easily call each other names on youtube but in real life wouldnt say shit.
No, I would easily call you an idiot in real life, I speak my mind and dont give a fuck who I tell it to. If you knew me you would agree ^_^.
I still don't think you "choose" to stop believing it, I mean really really try, can you believe in it again? no, you cant, and that is what I was getting at.
as for the other thing, I dont have many characters left so please look at what I told pfarabee. sorry.
@TheAtheistWolf Yes but belief only flourishes when unquestioned. Why let stupid beliefs like christianity and islam run amok? Why not pull them up for being douches when they are? Why not question the lies they tell themselves and us? Once they have to face the truth belief will die. Yes I am an anti theist. I am right to be so.
Ok then? I never said anything about questioning a belief did I? I never said that they weren't stupid beliefs did I? This has absolutely nothing to do with what I was talking about, way to make a fool of your self.
that didnt make any sense. You tell me about how people should question the beliefs, etc. so I reply to you that I wasnt saying we shouldn't do that, I think people should question their beliefs. Then you take a quote from me while I was talking to someone else because he said you choose to believe something which I pointed out was dead wrong.
How about you present an actual argument for me, or if you are going to just comment on what I said at least make it make sense?
I assume it was criticism as it seemed as we were having a discussion which I was assuming you were replying to you.
I did not say I was not discussing beliefs I said "I never said anything about questioning a belief did I? I never said that they weren't stupid beliefs did I?"
do you see now?
second, I would agree that at times that is a choice, but for others it may not seem sufficient, or maybe something else to the sorts.
@TheAtheistWolf if the person is being honest, then no, I don't think they should be fired or forced to make an insincere apology. If someone would like to help change the person's mind, however, that would be appropriate.
If they are being honest about being afraid of a certain group of people and the public knows about this, then would you want them representing your organization though? Look, he should have understood what could have happened if he said that. I personally dont care if he does or not, it's just that some do and that can ruin your organization's image and drive people away.
@TheAtheistWolf I would rather have someone working for me who was honest about such things than someone who would lie about it. Someone who says that "group x is inferior and must be destroyed" is open to hostile reaction, I think. Someone who says "I don't understand group x, and am a bit frightened by them" is a prime candidate for an open discussion and a helping hand to learn more about group x and why they aren't so scary after all. Show them what inclusion is about, don't expel them.
Oh yes, I would agree with you sorry I have changed my mind a little bit since then, but not entirely. anyway... I dont think he should be fired, but I do think that he should have realized what could have happened if he said it. The public now knows this about him, right? do you really think that NPR would want him to represent their company? Think about it that way. I do think that firing was a little too much though.
Mabye he should pray or keep his fears to himself. He would still have that job.

If anything, the people in garb are the ones who we should not worry about!

being nervous of muslims "in their garb" is irrational, and immature.
TFTB, i love you brother, but this vid is just plain wrong. you honestly think its not insulting to them? you honestly saying if someone on the radio said everyone with a rosary made them nervous about possible terrorism, that Catholics wouldn't get their knickers in a twist? or if they said "hasidic jews make me nervous when i see them on planes in their garb", you think they wouldn't get sacked? c'mon man.
gothatfunk 1 year ago
@gothatfunk a muslim "in their garb" is probably statistically something of the magnitude of 50,000% more likely to blow up the plane than a non-muslim who isnt in garb. the guy probably realizes that and got scared.
its no coincidence that people without guns dont shoot people. the same can be said of non-muslims and not committing acts of terrorism.
volound 1 year ago 7
@volound frankly, i think if a muslim were intent on commiting an act of terrorism, they'd be trying to draw as little attention to themselves as possible.
you conveniently ignore the point of my comment, that being that if you said something like that about a different faith group on NPR, you'd be just as likely to get fired.
gothatfunk 1 year ago
@gothatfunk like what? "im really scared about working in this abortion clinic because of crazy christian fundies that have blown them up?"
i doubt it. i havent looked into this particular incident, but i absolutely guarantee that he was fired because muslims phoned in and complained he was being racist. it would be typical.
volound 1 year ago
@volound so what if they did?
as a former DJ on radio for ten years, i can tell you that even most commercial stations go out of their way to come across as "faith neutral". commercial stations may risk losing advertisers by offending listeners if they so wish. a publicly funded station is in a different position.

the chances are, the terrorist who is going to blow up the plane is going to dress differently to fit in.

Your comment was purely conjecture which doesn't help anybody, neither muslim or anyone else for that matter. Which makes it completely pointless.
TheSpankymonkey 1 year ago
@volound which non-muslims are u speaking of: tim mcvay, the unibomber, joseph stack...Videla in Argentina, or Somoza in Nicaragua, Hitler also committed acts of terrorism...the problem here is I do not believe you know the definition of terrorism and for that I will state it here: the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce an individual, group of people or a state especially for political gain. meaning the Mafia is considered a terrorist organization..weren't most of them catholic?
xZemmax 1 year ago
@xZemmax i doubt they rob banks to please god though....
volound 1 year ago
@volound who doesn't rob banks to please god? the Mafia, the mafia doesn't only rob banks....as you can see I did not state religion in the definition of terrorism, I am stating the definition of terrorism only. I think people have recently been brainwashed to think terrorism is ONLY doing terror in the name of god...terrorism is terrorism, and the others I have mentioned all committed acts of terrorism in the name of their savior, god, fairy godmother, santa claus...whatever you like to call it
xZemmax 1 year ago
@volound Actually, I dont think a smart muslim would hijack or bomb a plane with islamic turbans or checkerboard cloth on their head (held on by a piece of black cord). How is he going to get past all the security, and the air marshals on the plane undercover would point him out immediately to watch if he did get past security. if a muslim was serious about causing harm like that, they'd likely get a clean cut hair-cut, wear a nice little fashionable American Eagle outfit, and then do the thing.
runetang 1 year ago
@runetang terrorists think like that, non-terrorists dont. id say a non-terrorist would be more scared of a muslim that looks like osama bin laden than one wearing an american eagle outfit.

One way to fight christianity is with its donations.
People need to know that the money they put in the plate is being spent
on defending pedophiles.
Between 1984 and 1994 the church spent over half a BILLION dollars in court
battles '' compo'' and treating priests for their pedofilia.
When someone puts money in the church plate they are supporting pedophilia.

TheAtheistWolf 1 year ago
@TheAtheistWolf I believed in Santa clause at one time, but after i grew up, I chose not to believe in it because it was silly and foolish.
After what the media has shown, i think almost everyone gets a little uneasy when they see muslims on planes. Sure its sterotyping but he was telling his point of view. What he was scared of.... And btw i find it funny how people easily call each other names on youtube but in real life wouldnt say shit.
Hooahgoarmy 1 year ago

No, I would easily call you an idiot in real life, I speak my mind and dont give a fuck who I tell it to. If you knew me you would agree ^_^.

TheAtheistWolf 1 year ago
@TheAtheistWolf Yes but belief only flourishes when unquestioned. Why let stupid beliefs like christianity and islam run amok? Why not pull them up for being douches when they are? Why not question the lies they tell themselves and us? Once they have to face the truth belief will die. Yes I am an anti theist. I am right to be so.

@adolthitler
that didnt make any sense.
TheAtheistWolf 1 year ago
@TheAtheistWolf Not every reply to you is a criticism of you, or what you have said.
You are trying to find the criticism, so you can fight it, but.....
I was only making comments on the subject.
I quoted you because you said you were not discussing beliefs, the quote shows you were. That was my criticism on that point.
While my first point was a reply to you, its a generalised rant.
A specific criticism now.. some do choose to ignore evidence, for faith and thats a choice of belief.
adolthitler 1 year ago
@adolthitler

If they are being honest about being afraid of a certain group of people and the public knows about this, then would you want them representing your organization though? Look, he should have understood what could have happened if he said that. I personally dont care if he does or not, it's just that some do and that can ruin your organization's image and drive people away.
TheAtheistWolf 1 year ago
