  • Is this video ripped from the region 2 DVD you link to? I would buy that in a second if the whole thing looks this crisp and clear.

  • In 2004, a poll of actors of the Royal Shakespeare Company, including Ian McKellen, Donald Sinden, Janet Suzman, Ian Richardson, Antony Sher and Corin Redgrave, acclaimed paul scofield's Lear as the greatest Shakespearean performance ever.WIKIPEDIA.

  • I've never seen King Lear played better. Scofield was brilliant.

  • Its like Film Noir Shakespeare. Hell yes.

  • Amazing. The only reason this doesn't top McKellen's version for me is that it isn't quite true to the text.

  • Why isn't this masterpiece on DVD?

  • @RandyAKing

It is on DVD. Try Amazon.

  • Great verse speaking from P Scofield..Completely natural and spontaenous...As it should be..And the hand held jerky camera work is also a great call..It adds to the rough, natural quality of the playing.

  • Great segment from a fine film. Perhaps Criterion or another comparable art house label will rerelease this gem. Thanks for posting.

  • Wow. Incredible (as I expected from Scofield).

  • Patrick MaGee. YESS!!!

  • my favourite production, the pace and colour just suits it better.

  • The English Shakespeareans. Their bench is deeper that America's starting lineup.

  • @goback3spaces As an American Shakespearean, I cry foul to that: I am happy to be working with incredibly talented actors on the New York classical stage. I agree the UK has the advantage, but it isn't that they've more talent or more skill . . . it's that they have a National Theatre and a national commitment to fostering Shakespearean actors. America neglects her stage actors, so her great stage artists either remain obscure or are famous for their sidelines on screen.

  • @thfloreth Okay, okay. No offense intended. Your points are excellent, and I stand corrected. I write plays, and I feel neglected in my own way.

  • Please tell me which scene has the burgundy lines cuz im playin that role in my univ play

  • Note how between 4:38 and 5:38, Scofield does not blink even once for 60 seconds, and again, between 7:58 and 9:18 he does not blink for 80 seconds. :)

  • Whoever posted one star is clearly not particularly bright. This production and performance is remarkable.

Like my students who rail at the black and white, the person responsible would possibly be better served with Michael Bay and Term.2 or some such garbage.
