I still get so happy when he says her name all these years later! I was working at a hotel in Arizona the night this show was on and I remember watching through a window in a room...lol. Cynthia really knocked it out of the park that year...she absolutely deserved this Emmy!

I was soooo happy when Cynthia Watros won this award!! Eileen Davidson deserved AN Emmy for playing six or seven characters, but I feel that Cynthia's character was written in a more gritty and powerful fashion. And those inbred hillbillies in the audience jeering should be ashamed of themselves. I also agree that Susan Lucci was out of her league in 1998. Love her to death, but she would never have beaten Eileen or Cynthia. Glad she finally won the following year, though.

Basically this came down between Watros and Davidson, and Zimmer.... Susan Lucci, love you, but you're not in the same league as those two ladies. Jackie Zeman, lol that you looked human back then. Anyway Watros deserved the Emmy but Davidson also would've been seriously deserving. I think Watros was seen as the more serious actress though because Eileen Davidson was seen more as comic relief. And Kim Zimmer reportedly never forgave Watros for beating her out for this emmy! Catty!

I love both Cynthia Watros and Eileen Davidson as actresses, but seriously Eileen Davidson is the only actress in Soap Opera history to play 5 characters! She should have won the award, even watros thought so when she said "My husband told me to prepare a speech but I didnt think I was going to win"

1st of all....Watros was the favorite to win that year. Most of the soap press & unbiased fans had Watros winning. Many considered Davidson having a shot, but assumed the Emmy panel wouldn't care for the over the top storyline.

2nd...Erika Slezak won 1 of her Emmy's for playing Viki, Niki, Jean, Tori, Tommy, and Princess (that's 6) in 1995.

3rd....Watros wasn't unprepared because she thought Davidson would win. She was likely unprepared because she didn't want to get her hopes up.

If GL was the best soap, why was it cancelled? ABC soaps and DOOL have an army of fans who would cause world war 3 if they ever cancelled General Hospital, Days of our lives or All My children. No one really cares that Guiding light is fading out, like its old lady viewers, the show is outdated. GL is dead last among young ppl in ratings. GH is # 1, Days & AMC are tied for #2 &Y&R is tied w/ OLTL for # 3 in the 18-49 age group, the target audience for marketing/advertising. The "light" is gone!!

It all comes down to the bottom line, CBS has that "old lady" demographic & advertisers dont find CBS soaps useful for marketing. Sure CBS soaps are usually tops in the neilsons, but most are old women who've been watching for yrs. In the 18-59 age demographic, GH, AMC & DOOL are tops. I found out GH gets most money from advertisers. Many dont want to market to CBS crowd, sad but true.dont believe me?On daytime emmys, listen to HUGE applauds for GH,AMC, DOOLvs. CBS, this is why GL was cancelled.

Cynthia Waltros is a very good actress! And she did deserve her emmy. But Eileen Davison played Kristen very dramatically.

What I'm impressed with is Eileen Davidson' acting abilities. We saw her cry, and cry and cry and cry some more as Ashley Abott. As Kristen, I saw that she could play a bitch. As Susan, I saw she could play funny. I think the role expanded Eileen as an actress, and that is what I celebrate.

Cythia was very good too. She also deserved this emmy.

I guess u and I have something in common, I was in high school running home 2 see what Annie Dutton (and Dinah) would to do next. 97-98 was the year that Guiding Light was shinning I thank the Executive Producer of GL Paul Rauch for giving Cynthia Watros excellent material, he tuned the poor alcoholic nurse into one of Daytime best female Villains of all time, Nurse Dutton will go down in history as one the Villains of all time and in Guiding Light's history.

No, Cynthia DESERVED this award more that year. Her breakdown on the witness stand was the most buzzed about performance on soaps in 1997. She was on almost every day during the 1997 calendar year on GL and delivered tour-de-force performances throughout the whole year. Eileen was good on Days, but Cynthia clearly had the edge that year.

Eileen was also featured nearly every day during 1997 AND played several characters at one time. The clip of Eileen in this Emmy clip was when her main character, Kristen, finally had to face up to all the villainous things she had done and it was really, really good, let me tell you.

This was Cynthia's and Eileen's year! LOL

Joe Mascolo was even looking between Kristian Alfonso and Eileen when he was stalling on opening the envelope. Notice they don't seem happy that it was Cynthia's award.

And that was only the FIRST half of the year!

i remember eileen on days when i was a boy. she shined as good kristen &bad Kristen. not so good as crazy kristen, only Kimberlin Brown does crazy well. as 4 da characters she played, i give her credit,she did a good job. howevthat was 4 comedic purposes,& comedic performances dont equal emmy awards. we never had GuidingLight in South Africa so i cnt judge Watros' performnce but i liked her in drewcarey & titus, i dont watch lost, so i can see her winning an emmy.
