Possibly, the train could derail. . .then how about revisiting the "cowcatcher" idea, but designed for cars? Think of a snowplow-like ramped wedge on the front of the lead power unit. The wedge could have carbide blades on it to break the car into easily managed chunks, which are then launched up and to the sides by the wedge. The forces experienced by the power unit would be downward, keeping it on the tracks. Paint teeth on it just to get the point across!
