really if you come from kiting/kitesurfing this looks as such a huge fail but is soo funny to watch.
Just launch some meters dowhill and will make it so much more easy, then just pull them break and let it carry you uphill in the stronger wind then rise.
It's a pity that sttill the most competitionpilots (and other) can fly but can not start .But they are to pride or lazy to learn groundhandeling in rough conditions .
We start a tandem in these conditions without a/c technique.or a competition glider even with 6 Bfr.
man, i had to do hundreds of forwards and reverse inflations in all types of wind and that was just for P2 training, this is just ridiculous, i would be embarrassed to be their instructor
most of them are experienced paragliders but taking off in strong winds requires different techniques. here in holland soaring is very populair among gliders, learning to start facing the glider and to "kite" your glider in high winds is a must. though not required handling if you want to have your licence because it still based on mountain flying where normal take-off is the standard procedure. only reverse start is briefly dealt with.
i dont get it..why the heck none of the pilots have control over their wings.. hold your B lines people!! this is not art of launching this is stupidity of launching.
@thermalf : true and you even fly faster and further.. BUT: try to hike, or even better to climbe, with a hang glider on your back, try to bring it up on a small mountain road, pack it to fly to an other country or just try to pull the emrgency without getting hurt. In other words, if getting to the take off is less than convenient, allthough I lohe the hanglider, I still go for my paraglider.
Just got my A/C riser launch down and was able to launch in 15 gusting to 22 the other day. Got her up, eased off the C's tapped the brakes and I was OFF! Kinda freaky but all in all I can say I was pretty happy with myself!
These are all experienced pilots - conditions are very rough and strong. I think I would launch a few 100 feet down the hill not at the top like these guys are trying to.
Uh...........these are all comp pilots heading out for goal! And if truth be known, most comp pilots got over being real pretty on takeoff long time ago. Grab the bag and Go!!!!!!!!!
its not a matter of being pretty. Its a matter of being safe for yourself and others. The competition should start from takeoff, like 60 seconds penalty for bad takeoffs. This is a good way to improve safety
Very funny video! And reactions are even more funny! Well, as I can read; the pilots who were there had fun and a good flyingday, so, why be negative? Nice video, makes me think about my launching in the dunes, he he.
I was there as well and was a very good day to fly....strong...but very good day !!! First thin...was a national championship so....we had many good pilots over there !!! Best Championship ever...more then 545 km in 7 days...DO YOU WANT MORE LOL...
As I remember this day, all the good pilots launched without no problem. We had a very good 82 km task with the start opening at 02:30 PM, 92 pilots on goal and the winner did it in 01:40 hr. So, it's not fair to judge the organization because an edited video. Andradas Cup organization is one of the best in the world.
What a cluster fuck. Free for all. No organazation what so ever. very dangerous. try spreading them out or give them two trys and call next pilot. Something. Dam
It looks well over 20kmh, I'd say closer to 30kmh in the gusts. Look at the gliders parked in the wind. They are comp wings from the time and trim is easily 38-39kmh.
Unless you mean 20 Mph, then I agree totally. Only for the brave ;)
in the defense of the organizers, the wind didn't start blowing until after the window was opened. The more experienced didn't really have any problems. Most of the bloopers you're seeing are inexperienced pilots.
Two words: Shit show. The launch window should have been much earlier & with people hucking like that, they should have cut their losses and canned the task.
Organizer should have opened the start window earlier. Poor planning. It looks like it is getting blown out. Any restriction on assisted launch at comps? I don't like to do it as a rule, but it may have helped in this instance.
