The game itself doesn't lag. but whenever you hit someone, there will be a few (or 1) frames, where the person hit, and the attacker (or object) will stand still. this is to prevent any lag, and to calculate flying distance when hit.

also, when ridley gets killed, the screen doesn't freeze because of lag, but because it looks cool. :)

I don't think it's hard (intense) difficulty either. since very hard mode adventure in melee was a total pain in the ass.
