Chronologically, it started when Nanami's dad found a young stranded Tico on a beach and nursed it back to health in a facility. On the same day, Nanami was born. Nanami's dad introduced her to Tico when she was just an infant and the two became friends since. The story starts with their quest to find the illuminating whale. Along the way, they had other adventures like stopping a syndicate that uses seal carcasses to smuggle weapons, finding a treasure ship in Africa, etc.
In ep 15, Junior was born and until ep 23, Junior and Nanami would ocassionally fight for Tico's attention. In ep 23, Tico died trying to save a crewmember and Nanami has a hard time getting over Tico's death. Eventually, Junior took over Tico's place as Nanami's friend as the quest continue to look for the illuminating whale. They eventually found the whale but a rival group captured the whale first for studies until Nanami and the other characters help it escape.
The last episode features Nanami and Junior entering another dimension where they encounter an entire race of illuminating whales. They also encounter the spirits of Tico and Nanami' mom.
Overall, I think it is a good anime to watch although it reminds me a lot of Free Willy. As a further note, Nanami has the unusual ability to stay underwater for long periods of time and also has an almost telepathic bond with Tico. She carries a whistle made of a seashell to call for Tico.

I think a lot of them are on Google Videos as "Tico Et Ses Amis". Some Czechs have also the entire series, but in Czech language, of course..

I find it surprising that Junior grew so fast. He didn't have any teeth in the episode before this one.
For those of you that didn't know, the original Tico died two episodes before this one. Her offspring took her place as the lead orca.
