Marshall stacks were less than $1000, don't know about the camera but it clearly suffered minimal damage. He could afford it ! @mikegotteri I remember reading a book on Deep Purple, and it said that the cameramen getting too close to Ritchie is what set him off on this path of destruction.
I am a great fan of Ritchie Blackmore but I saw Deep Purple with Tommy Bolin (Come Taste The Band 76') and Bolin Stole the show even from the rest of the band! Tommy Bolin had the most unbelievable stage presence. The audience loved him. I later saw Blackmore with Rainbow 78' and he was great and all but Tommy Bolin was better!

Every MOMENT of Cal Jam was, for me, a better entertainment value than most of the entire shows I've been to, before or since. This festival singlehandedly redeemed the large-venue Rock concert after Altamont had scared everybody out of their wits and several others had bored most peoeple to tears. Rare Earth; Earth, Wind, and Fire; a brand-new band called The Eagles; Seals and Crofts; Black Oak Arkansas; Black Sabbath; Deep Purple; ELP. Yeah!

@Thorpe741 Nah, Fender Strats in '74 (and those are 70s strat's he's using) cost $350 (that's what I paid for mine new). Marshall stacks were less than $1000, don't know about the camera but it clearly suffered minimal damage. He could afford it ! Funny how similar the Nirvana at Reading ' 92 vid is to this.Of course Pete originated this type of theatrics in the mid 60s!

The other reason is as others said: people like you only want what Big Media says is "hip and cool". You don't go looking for things yourself. If you did, you would see that half of what they sell you is garbage.

I am a great fan of Ritchie Blackmore but I saw Deep Purple with Tommy Bolin (Come Taste The Band 76') and Bolin Stole the show even from the rest of the band! Tommy Bolin had the most unbelievable stage presence. The audience loved him. I later saw Blackmore with Rainbow 78' and he was great and all but Tommy Bolin was better!

@mjw9363 Blackmore was one of the best guitarests ever. He didn't need a gimmick to disguise his perfect playing. This was just the icing on the cake for the thousands of fans that were screaming for him to make the ultimate sacrifice and smash his guitar up. I know, I saw him do it with Rainbow.
To compare him with Bolan is like comparing Nirvana with JLS.

@weblogic117 I was 16 when I first saw him with Rainbow. At Granby Halls, Leicester. I survived and still play lots of Purple and Rainbow stuff. My 20 tear old daughter loves Muse and Bullet but she thinks Rainbow are brilliant.

Every MOMENT of Cal Jam was, for me, a better entertainment value than most of the entire shows I've been to, before or since. This festival singlehandedly redeemed the large-venue Rock concert after Altamont had scared everybody out of their wits and several others had bored most peoeple to tears. Rare Earth; Earth, Wind, and Fire; a brand-new band called The Eagles; Seals and Crofts; Black Oak Arkansas; Black Sabbath; Deep Purple; ELP. Yeah!

Keep in mind this whole thing was the first-ever made-for-TV Rock thing. We Rockers had finally made it!! They don't even know how many attended, but there were only SIX arrests. (Rumor has it Ritchie made it into his chopper just in time to avoid becoming Number Seven!) Sadly, home video was several years off. Did you see that camera?

@mjw9363 I would just like to say that he was very angry this day, because they were made to go on before sunset, even though they were supposed to go on at sunset. This is why he plays almost the entire show in his regular clothes, and it's why he tried to trash the stage completely and killed the camera...he said that his real intention were to kill the man who forced them on stage, but when he didn't spot him he went for the camera...he actually had to be smuggled out of the state after this
