Great video. Thank you for speaking something I've been "crying in the dark" about for years....heterosexuals don't get it because they expect us to just "fuck" each other and be happy......and other gay men, don't get me started.
This was a great video!! Loved it. Everything is says is true within our community as a whole. To have people stop discriminating against us, we need to stop doing it first. Everyone, no matter what sexual preference, race, looks, etc. Deserve to be treated with the upmost respect.
It should come as no surprise that we grow up in a society that teaches us to discriminate. Queers are not immune to this insofar as we are a part of this society. How do we overcome it? We can't do it in isolation. We can't "unlearn" oppression in a class room or by reading a book (although we can and should learn how oppression works and why in a class room or in a book). The best way to undo and unlearn oppression is by being an activist.
Love, love, love this video! It's a topic that we don't talk about in the lgbt community and it really needs to be talked about. gay men can be viciously judgmental. how are we going to build up community for equality in the mainstream if we keep tearing each other down from within?
whenever I try to search a theoretical frame from which to answer the question of discrimination from within I remember what Michel Foucault said in an interview after he gained fame among critical theorists, he said he doesn't see gay politics as a veritable force to recon with in the coming immediate future because there is too much difference within.
Hold on, let me get my microscopic violin. Good lord, get the fuck over yourselves. Not being attracted to someone, or not wanting to FUCK them because of their appearance isn't even in the same fucking universe as being discriminated against in employment or housing, and to pretend it is is a ludicrous joke. I'm NOT attracted to grossly obese, elderly, or feminine guys. Know who else I'm not going to give the time of day if they want a date? Women. Ooooh, how discriminatory of me! Gtfo.
@QueerTooIsm Thank you. And 10mintwo, you probably are what I call a "MASP" in the gay community (taken from WASP). You're a MACHO-ANGLO-SAXON PATRIACH. If someone doesn't look, act, or portray themselves just like you, you not only reject (and the issue here is FAR beyond simple dating rejection) but you SHUN and OPPRESS. It's people like you, not the heterosexual normative, that were the reason for why I almost killed myself a couple years ago. Bravo!
I think the what's most confusing about this video is that it is never clearly defined as to whether we are talking about social or sexual discrimination. It's not discrimination to not want to interact erotically with individuals you don't want to have sex with.
I hope that as our community matures, boundaries that are collectively understood will develop as to what is social vs. sexual behavior allowing for a greater variety of interactions.
I think this is more a start to a great project rather than an end product. I would encourage a longer version that makes it clear you are talking about discrimination and not just personal preferences, which some people seem to be getting from this. Not being attracted to someone is part of life, not treating someone with respect and fairness is unacceptable. Gay people are no better than anyone else, sadly, in respect to bigotry and it's good to get it out in the open.
While I appreciate the intention of this video, I've got to say I think it's largely bull. I find it hard to believe that any of the people in this video (or anyone anywhere for that matter) haven't ever had a discriminatory thought about another person based on race/age/weight/disability or any of the million distinctions that make everyone unique. Or I'm wrong and they've managed to round up a handful of gay saints.
Wow. Thank you so much for that wonderful video. I am truly blessed by your heart and your creation that calls us to a truer, freer, expression of our true selves.
