I recently started playing the DOS version of the game. Despite the primitive graphics, it is a captivating experience, and I did get the book and I plan on reading it as any Cyberpunk novel should be read... on a cell phone.
A friend of my Mother's bought the DOS version for me when it first came out. I read the book after initially being frustrated by the game (I thought the book might help me with the game), and found that not only did it help me (the whole cyberspace concept), but it became my favorite book. Thanks for posting!
@yeahtrophy i really didn't miss digitized speech when I played it, and the "amiga look" is still the best in my eye... but that's a matter of personal preferences. what's for sure is that neuromancer was a great game from a great novel
I just realized that the main character's photo on this intro looks a lot like William Gibson! COOL!! I used to play this song over and over again. WOW - what a great adventure! I had the C-64 version of this game.
I'm 33 and played this when it was new for the C64. I pirated it but after I beat it, I liked it so much I asked my dad to buy me a copy so that I could help support the people who made it. Amazing game... It brings back so many memories... If only they made a sequel or something...
@CaryMG youre quite welcome. been playing neuromancer since the time it came out as well, when i was in 7th grade. i graduated college 10 years ago - its been a while!
This reminds me of when I was a kid with a C64, and the neighbor girl's father got an IBM pc. They spent almost $3000 on it, and I never understood why, seeing as how that computer only put out four colors and beeping. I remember thinking it was weird that they didn't have to put disks in it to play games, though;)
It's Devo! "Some Things Never Change" is the name of the track. I suggest you buy their anthology which includes this song, "Pioneers Who Got Scalped".
When I saw the nice graphic and great music, I said to myself: "It must be the Amiga." Then the caption "C-64" appeared :) Wow, I had a Commodore 64 but I got fooled. Great job, the C-64 version is the best.
Firstly, I have to say how shocked I was at how bad the Amiga music was!
Secondly, if the gameplay was shown, Commodore 64 would have beaten PC. C64 16 colours, PC 4 colours! It was a magic time when a 39k machine still beat 384k machine!!!!
I think you'll find Neuromancer came out when most had CGA PC's. So comparing the games the same year, the C64 was better. And obviously even if you accept the 16 colour argument, the C64's 16 were used better and the SID 4 channel sound was better than PC speaker beep music.
That I do agree with. I am also partial to 32-color graphics on the Amiga and Apple IIgs, thought that's just the PC graphics with more colors. I do enjoy the different layouts of the backgrounds on the C64.
They did a huge job with the C64 version, squeezing the shit outta it. I remember Zzap! giving it the highest score ever (apart from Zak Mc Kracken II, hehe). But I still love the Amiga version most. Its theme is the only non-sampled one that doesn't suck, and it came up in-game every midnight spicing up the action. Back then I was 15, hadn't read the book nor knew who Devo were yet, and I recorded it on a tape to listen to in my Walkman. And guess where I got my nickname from?
i also played the game (on the apple II) before i read the book. then i read it, but i didnt really udnerstand it very well. ive read it 100 times since then and now i 'get it'.
i love the amiga version as well, thats the one i play on emu the most. i am working on a video of all the AIs but my save file got corruputed and i have to start over. and nice name! chaos is our mode and modus, our central kick...
@satan165 please let me know when you finish the video, I'd like to watch it, "with hooded eyes, perched on the edge of my worktable like some sort of state of the art gargoyle" :)
This game was really great. I played it on the C64 first, with my best friend. 4 disks, but the gameplay was not that bad, even with all of the disk swapping.
its in there....must be a prob on your end. the C64 actually has the more 'realistic' version of the original compared to others, try again, its in there!
I cried tears of joy!

The DOS version is the only one that didn't butcher the Devo song.

The C64 version is the best, but the PC version is the one I grew up with. Plus it has a sort-of retro futuristic cyberpunk feel.

I'd love to see a Neuromancer reference in Fallout*!

The version for the Apple IIgs sounds quite a lot better than the IIe version. Give it a try some time.

I'm amazed that the C64 version sounds better, prob. because of the distortion and resynth'd voice sampling.
