This dish would taste good even without MSG, which, unfortunately, is also used abundantly in "upscale" eating establishments, food venders and ready-made food products in the U.S., but the Chinese always get the bad rap for it. The fervent accusation of MSG usage in Chinese food shows how racist most of the world is essentially to the Chinese, and how ingnorant and crass it is. MSG is actually a barometer of Class Division-- upper-socioeconomic class and higher-educated Chinese don't use it.
That's just bull shit. If a high-class restaurant don't use msg then nobody will eat there. You're only talking about chinese ppl who cook at home themselves often in western countries because it's difficult to get pure msg like they do in China. High-class ppl in China don't cook, they eat in restaurants.
@sapphiwen err...u might want to reword. rich ppl r not necessarily high class. i think u mean "rich chinese don't cook, they eat in restaurants". but even so, high class and rich ppl still cook at home ;) maybe not all, but u should not have generalised.
I am a pretty big cook myself ,and anyone that try to cook this, it will not taste as good because this is one of those dishes that requires the big flame to bring out the "Wok Air" flavor.
whoever says MSG is poisonous, then you really should go and learn some proper science. Please no dot follow those misleading information. If anyone says MSG is a chemical, then salt is also a chemical, it's NaCl, as long as you use the MSG produced by proper company then you are safe.
im just wondering, sorry for my ignorance, but theres people who claim they are allergic ? and what china was useing before 1000 years ago when theres no MSG?
MSG is not a poison like cyanide of course, but I believe it's rather a slow poison that's definitely not good for your body if you take it all the time. I try to avoid it as much as I can. Just google "msg poison" and do your own research.
Wow, there goes an inferno on the pan. That is so cool. It looks like he has trained for many many years to cook this meal. I wish I could understand what the narrator is saying.

@sapphiwen MSG is shit and it's invented by Japanese. Ancient Chinese people back then don't have MSG in their dish.

@ppshchik
indeed, MSGs are actually quite prevalent in chinese cheap restaurants, although general families avoid MSGs as much as possible.

Don't use that MSG pleeeeeeeease! 味精 is MSG. It's cheating and poisonous.
astoria3011 2 years ago
It's a debating matter whether MSG really has any negative effect on human body. But I agree with you that it is kinda cheating.
Also on a side note, for family cooking, one really doesn't need that much oil either.

Cheating, yes. Poisonous? You have to be ignorant enough to believe it.
As a matter of fact, MSG can be found naturally in many things. Is chicken stock poisonous?
