  • man my windows 7 machine only has 3gb of ram and 2.13 ghz duo core (its a laptop)

  • SO Parallels kills VMware?

  • Very informative review of both options, thank you so much, I am now set on Parallels as it is much faster than VMWare Fusion.

  • Why do you always call it "Windows 2007"?

  • @musicfreak25195 Just my bad.. Sorry about that

  • Hello sir, I have a macbook with 2.5 of Ram, when setting up my VM should i set it to 2gb?

  • @IsThisMy1ife No - make sure you only set it to use 1.5gb so that OSX has room to run

  • Hi sr!.. i need help, (sry about my english) i just buy an imac, and i need autocad for my wife, i get parallel, windows 7, an autocad, it looks cool untill now, but autocad is just tooo slow!.. a creat my virtual machine with 1 GB ram..

do i need create 1 with more!? Ram is my problem!? =(

    Thnx!!

  • @poisonsm That is exactly what the problem is. You need more memory in your imac. Windows 7 AND AUTOCAD are memory hungry programs. So the first question is how much memory is in your iMac? If it's one of the newer iMacs then it should have come with 4GB memory.

If so configure your VM to use 2GB of RAM - that will make a good difference. At a minimum you need 2GB but if you will get even better performance if you can add more memory to the iMac and then give the VM 3 or 4GB of memory

  • @wkharris hey i have a early 2009 imac running osx 10.5.8 with 4gb of ram intel based and i tryed running windows 7 ultimate. that forze. i tried windows vista ultimate 64 bit. that crashed. i am now using vmwarefusion 3 newest version running windows vista 32 bit home premium with 100 gb implanted in windows and 200gb left in my mac hardrive. and windows vista home premium 32 bt works great but why did i have problems with the other 2 versions of windows i tried?

  • @poisonsm Also - You do not need to create a NEW VM go into the configuration setting and check two thiings.

    1. Under General Change Memory setting to at least 2GB

    2. Under Options/Optimization make sure you select Faster VM on drop down AND Enable Adaptive Hymbervisor and Tune Windows for Speed.

    Good Luck!

  • I'm at the moment of switching from VMWare Fusion to Parallels 5.

  • @laphongtudo do you need anti virus to run windows on mac?

  • @catha86 I don't run AV on Windows at all. With a well maintained set up and good practices you shouldn't need AV. I use MalwareBytes to scan my system from time to time.

  • @hisveggieness I decided to use a AV incase. I like to watch porn and my friends who sometimes use my computer can really fucked up my comp big time if I don't use AV. its free and take no effort so why not use it.

  • @catha86 Good reason not to is AV can use up a lot of resources, but if your scenario merits it then go for it.

  • My windows partition on my boot camp is NTFS, will parallels still work?

  • @topcat5665 Yes it should work just fine, Parallels supports NTFS

  • Parallels Desktop 5 Wins VMWareFusion Loses

  • 6:40 NOT clever, unless that black page flip feature is optional and you can disable it, its nice but if you cant do it while gaming it'll screw you over pretty bad, unless the feature doesnt disturb your game as bad as im imagining it.

  • It was very informative. Thanks for sharing!

  • Dear William,

Thank you very much for the very thorough comparison and demo of Parallels Desktop 5 vs. VMware Fusion. I think it gave a whole new perspective on what these two operating systems does and what they both do best their ways. Plus, I find you're voice very soothing - so it doesn't get any better. :-)

    Best of regards from Denmark.

  • Thank you so much!

  • I just wanted to add my thanks to those of others here who also found your brief video informative and helpful. The boot times from Parallel 5 were amazingly fast. I had just one wish, that stability reliability and robustness were also discussed for each program. Best regards and thank you again.

  • lol this was filmed on my birthday

  • Thanks for making the effort !! Very informant for someone like me trying to decide which one to buy.

  • Thanks for making this video very helpful. Exactly what I'm looking.

Now I know which one to purchase.

  • great video!! 1 question: I have parallels 5 installed fine, leaopard 10.6.3. macbook. i cannot access IE8--there is connection with my Verizon broadband, but the page just stays on connecting and displays nothing. Maybe I need to use that wrench tool you showed???

  • @sonalpatel628 Glad you liked it. From your comment here I take it you can not get on the internet? In other word IE loads but will not bring up a page correct? Assuming that is correct then YES use the wrench and check your network settings. If you still have questions shoot me a note and we can talk in more depth.

    Skeeter

  • @sonalpatel628: damn similar problem on my macBook pro with "internet explorer collection" - it`s IE1 - IE8 for webdevelopers

  • vmware is a pice of crap it real slow

  • ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh skeet! skeet! skeet!

  • Windows 2007 lol - great video though, thanks.

  • Windows 2007 lol - great video though, thanks.

  • Windows 2007 lol - great video though, thanks.

  • O_O it isnt windows 2007 its just 7!! seven SEVEN Se7en!!! but it was a great demonstration :D I love parallels since i got 5 I cant stop using my VM's! the only thing that really is better about vm fusion is the ability to run practically any os, but i guess parallels wants to make full support for everything first

  • What is better if I wanna run AutoCAD?

  • @MyOldMacintosh thats good question !!! i want to know too !!! please answer :-)

i will agree with all the others, very usefull video !!! go on mate

  • Hi! I'm not a gamer, but I'm curious if you know of any list of known compatibility or issues with any specific PC-based apps, in regard to the specific Mac OS that Parallels is installed on? Is it assumed that all apps and OS's will need to be the newest version, or is there a little bit of backwards compatibility?

Also, do you know if any license issues apply when using any PC-based software on a Mac running Parallels, in regards to how many machines an app can be installed on?

  • I am glad this was of help

  • What's better for gaming? I think parallels right? Im buying a mac soon and I want something else then bootcamp, i dont wanna reboot all the time but i wanna know sure that I can get a decent gameplay (if i give it enough cores and ram memory) and that fraps runs smooth with a decent framerate, which one should I pick?

  • I completely think Parallels is the way to go. What I would do is (assuming your a hard core game) is first setup a book camp partition for the killer games then setup Parallels to use the Boot Camp partition to play the games on that will play fine in Parallels. Hope that helps

  • Yeah! I forgot that you could use a bootcamp partition too! Thanks, will give it a try when i have the mac :)

  • By doing it that way - it saves you from two different copies of Windows on you Mac and gives you the best option depending on what software you need to run

  • @maximummovies Well if you're really a gamer then you might want to consider a PC but if you're going for a mac paralells 5.0 is by far the better option. Especially where gaming is concerned. You can use paralells to run a bootcamp partition *BUT* it tends to be slower than a virtual machine so for any hard core games or video editing etc you'll need to boot into bootcamp but for general use paralells will get you through.

  • I found that screen really helpful, informative, and great to have a commentary as you demonstrated Parallels D.T .5...and those benchmarks were REALLY impressive...

    thank you

  • Glad you liked it!

  • I installed windows 7 in bootcamp first then i downloaded the Parallels free trial. I must have selected the wrong option at the Parallels Welcome page. Because it seem to not open very easly, usually get an error message twice before it opens. Could this be because it is the trial version or something to do with windows 7 installed in boot camp first. I've gone to the Apple store and took a one to one class and the were confused too. I'm tempted to delete and start over. Your thoughts?

  • Most likely too late here - Thoughts delete and start again. Sorry for not being more responsive to your question

  • Could you tell me whether my MacBook can run PD 5? the configuration is 2G Hz chip and 2GB memory. I am just bit worried about the speed. I need to use Excel VBA to program, but Office for Mac doesn't have VBA. Thanks in advance...

  • That should be "ok", however I would run it with WIndows XP not Windows 7, and configure the VM to only use 1GB of memory. For what you want to run with VBA in Excel, unless it is just a huge spreadsheet shout be "ok"

    Let me know

  • Thanks very much for your speedy reply. I really appreciate your help. I am not planning to install Win 7 on my MacBook, cauz I know the speed will be as low as using a nokia n900 to run Mac OS...haha. From your response, you suggest me to address 1GB memory for the VM. Do you mean VM will be more suitable than PD to operate Excel VBA? Thanks in advance

  • No - Parallels Desktop is the way to go, I am just suggesting that configure Parallels to use only 1GB of memory on your MacBook. Make sense?

  • WOW.

I just installed Parallels 5, it's sooo much faster than VMWare Fusion 3.

    I'm impressed.

They've added a ton of nice features to Parallels 5 too. Very nice.

  • excellent explanation... 5* for u bro!

  • virtualisation sucks!! i prefer bootcamp... its so sluggish cudnt believe i was using the same machine.

  • if your just going to run windows anyways, buy a pc bro.

Install OS X in dual boot on a pc = save money, higher performance hardware. Win win

  • Does anyone know how to have Windows XP recognize my USB flash 2.0 drive? I have Parallels 5.0, when I switch to MAC OS it recognizes the USB no problem, but if I switch to XP it doesn't. I even have it set up to ask me and when I choose Virtual Machine no USP on the desktop shows up, nor under My Computer. Does anyone know how to resolve this? A solution would be much appreciated.

  • I have a Macbook pro (Santa Rosa- 4GB RAM) I bought in Oct 2007 and it has tiger OS X 10.4.11 installed. How do I determine if I can install either 32 bit or 64 bit Windows 7 using parallels 5 desktop mac? Can you please assist ?

  • If you have a 64bit mac, you can run 64bit windows. The only intel macs without 64bit processors are the ones marked as "Core Duo" - "Core 2 Duo" and everything else are 64bit.

  • thank you that makes it very clear- I have a Intel "core 2 duo"- 64 BIT it is- thank you!

  • anytime! ^_^

  • it sucks that you have to pay for this great app the trial version is just 22 days or so then it´s of

  • Awesome, thank you! I guess what I'm going to do is first get a mac, and when and if I get one i will decide if i'll get Parallels 5.0 or just get XP to run on boot camp because I just want to be able to play a couple of games like Guild Wars, and Guilld Wars 2 when it will come out (eventually) and some othe strategy games. thanks for the help! Have a good one.

  • XP???

  • Would you be able to install and run a windows game on parellels desktop 5 or VMware ? Or do you have to go through bootcamp and install a windows OEM ?

  • Yes you can and if you look at my other videos on my YouTube channel you should be able to find it.

  • I have Parallels 4. I've been pretty happy with it. Version 5 looks interesting.

I've been looking into VMWare out of curiosity. For now I think I'll stick with Parallels. Thanks for the video. :)

  • Your very welcome!

  • well dont know about parallels

but beleive me you wont wanna have vmware fusion

its extremely slow - boot up , shutdown takes ages even with good specs!

it slows your mac down beyond any belief!

and whilst its doin "something" you cannot use anything else everthing is kinda frozen or is shuttering .

nice idea but very bad executed !

its a huge setback and it feels like 1990 what speed and performance concerns

  • Very nice video and thank for posting VMWare vs. Parallels test results. I am impressed.

  • so can you use 64 bit on his mac because he was only using 32 bit? :)

  • Yes you can because the VM virtualizes the 64bit environment

  • Im still not entirely clear on what the difference between Coherence mode and Crystal mode... Could you give me a quick one-liner that differentiates between the 2? Thanks! great video 5*

  • The only real differences in them are where the WIndows Menu exists when running. In Coherence mode it sits in your doc and is embedded in the Parallels icon, and Crystal mode you get new menu options added next to your clock that give you the Windows Menu, etc. Does that help?

  • It sure does. THanks.

  • i dunno to if i should get vmware or parallels because i only have 2gb of ram so do you think windows 7 will run smoothly?

  • I would go with Parallels and configure the VM for just 1GB of memory. You will see better performance.

  • Im pretty sure it will

  • i am using the trial for parallels desktop 5 running windows 7

on my imac with 2.66ghz and 2gb of ddr3 ram.

I also use vmware version 3.

my review, Parallels is so much faster than vmware.

I recommend getting Parallels Desktop 5

    Hope this helps:)

  • Thanks for your review and this video! I the same MacBook Pro setup and Parallel. I haven't had a chance to checkout your other videos yet but was wondering why my new Microsoft HD Cinema webcam is running slow & choppy? The webcam works great in smaller settings but sucks when I try to record in HD! Any suggestions or helpful advice? Thanks!

  • On the sounds of it my guess is the amount of data transfer coming into the USB port thru virtualization is a bottle neck for the VM or your hitting a wall on the graphics card. Two suggestions for you - 1. Make sure you have allocated enough memory for the VM and that you hare told the VM to use both CPUs 2. Try switching the video mode on the Mac so it is using the Nvidia 9600 GT video card. Best of luck!

  • Thanks for your quick reply, I just got this Macbook Pro, how do I switch the video mode on the Mac?

  • Awesome tutorial!!! Couldn't have been done at a better time - I just bought a 13" MacBook Pro w/2.53 Core 2 processor - apparently the same machine you are using. I've used VMware Fusion 2.0, but not Parallels, so your tutorial has helped me decide which one to use on this new computer. Please excuse my ignorance, but concerning the versions of Windows you are testing: Were they located in a Boot Camp partition, or were they installed directly into the Parallels virtual machine?

  • Glad the tutorial screencast was helpful and the versions of Parallels I was running were directly into the Parallels virtual Machine. No bootcamp.

  • Dude, your virtual machine on a laptop runs Windows 7 better than my PC does xD

I should fix up my Mac, I kinda miss it, it's just sitting there on my desktop... While I use this crappy PC... Meh..

  • Glad this was helpful to you!

  • Thanks for a very good video.

I have some questions regarding an application that I use all the time called Digsby.

In windows this app will open all my emails/messengers and have them lined up on the bottom right where I can with one click on each email view the new messages that I received...etc

So if I am running crystal on parallels in MAC OS, and running digsby....would it show all these email icons on the top just like in windows? or does it only show the digsby icon? Appreciate your help.

  • If you shoot me an email address I will be happy to show you how it looks. I am familiar with DIgsby

  • tanks

  • That was very helpful......

    Thanks mate

  • Good - Glad you liked it!

  • cool cool cool

    thank you

  • Glad you liked it - I am in the process of uploading the Game Play screen cast now

  • I like your background. From where did you get it?

  • Very informative and well worth the time to watch.

  • Wow, those numbers are impressive. I'm glad I chose Parallels for my new iMac. It runs Windows 7 from my boot camp partition really well!
