really depends were you look at the moment you can get it with Napoleon total war for £22 in a game of the year edition, very good deal. If by free versions you mean Demos then yes there is a demo for it on steam.

That should happily get max settings with good fps, on the largest battles you might get a small FPS drop if your zoomed into the mens faces but thats all :P

MY GTS 250 doesn't work correctly on this game.. In the tutorial, the weapons are invisible, the trees go away as I get closer, and they randomly stack on top of eachother, i think theres supposed to be a house there or something. Weird!!! GTS 250 always has had bad draw distance (object pop) too.. not for you it seems
I don't believe its a problem with your GTS250 mate, as I've had other people tell me about that problem too, few things to check. What Power supply do you have? a link to a website would be great feel free to PM me your response to this. Also are you using the latest nvidia drivers? and whats the rest of your PC's spec?
@lionheartx10 Well, I fixed Empire's main glitches by going back to the 186 drivers, which caused new problems (texture flashing and ctds). Also, I'm pretty sure all GTS 250's have bad draw distance, after watching a few videos it's fairly similar, and disappointing. Who knows if everyone does?.. Anyways, my PSU is a Corsair 550Watt, I was using the latest drivers, and the rest of my PC is: Mobo: M2N68-LA, Dual Core AMD 2.5 X2 7550, 3 GB DDR2 Ram.. I don't think you can help me any more than---

@lionheartx10 It's a 1GB model. meant by nvidia support their forums, which hasn't gotten me anywhere except a few other GTS 250 users agreeing with me. I contacted the PNY (manufacturer) support and of course they recommended I update my BIOS and something else (which I tried to). That definately isn't the problem. It's been a month since I contacted them, and I can RMA any time. But I don't know if I should because I read somewhere that they returned someone's card saying it had no problem...

Actually thats interesting as I would bet that your mother board is also probably the reason why your GTS250 isn't working too well. If your mobo isn't too old, then you'll probs find a bios update on the manufacturers website that allows your mobo to support quad core and maybe fix your graphics issues too. I had to upgrade my mobo too when I changed from an old dual core to the quad core I have now.

well i have a 500w psu don't know if that's enough. Well I pre-ordered a Special forces edition box from play, I prefer box games, so its whatever you want to do, neither is better for DLC, they both work the same as they are the same, just one is downlaoded straight to your PC and the other you have to get a box of and install it from the discs :P
Yes, unlike some games which have a normal version and a steam version, Empire is a fully intergrated Steam version only, whether you buy it from a store or from steam, boxed or as a digital download only one version of Empire exists, so the DLC will work fine :P
Completely different, bigger units by far, overall different stratages need to be used, better looking graphics wise, if your PC can handle it and genrally I'd say a more epic game. However I'd say its unfair to compare the two, as though they both are RTS's thats about where the similarities end. Fantastic game, just like the previous TW's.

Upgrade? or do you mean Unlock? I have a video showing how to unlock all factions excluding emergent factions like the US, you can get another mod for that though. But you can already play them online and via the RTI campaign.
unlike rome and medieval, empire already has everything unlocked so you dont have to defeat nations to play as them, but the new units you have to buy from the steam store
Well you need a mod to unlock all the factions, just as you did with Rome or M2TW, however I miss the ability in Empire to gain access to a faction after you defeat them like in Rome and M2TW :P

DOn't bother, its just the same card that might run the game on 1 resolution higher...There is no practicle purpose. Get a GTX295 or just keep your current card.
Mate a GTS250 is not the same a a 4890HD, a 4890HD is quite a bit more powerful ! Its not just about being able to play on higer resolutions, its about getting better FPS too. It can match the power of a GTX285, a GTS250 if overclocked well could only just reach the power of a GTX260. Plus telling him to get a GTX295 isn't the smartest decision as unless he has a top of the range system atm he'll need a new PSU to run a GTX295 aswell !

Hey sorry for the late reply, as Philzism said a 9800 will be fine, but if you can get a GTS250 go for it, its the upgraded remodeled version of the 9800GTX2 so its quite powerful :P
liked to see your game, and you have the greater quality video i ever seen about this game, just a thing, how much did you apend buying the things for your systems specs? and that video cart you use is superior than the geforce 9800gtx?
All in all my PC cost just over £400 very cheap because I built the PC myself from parts and I didn't need to buy any software as I already have it, and my card is better than a 9800GTX its even better than a 9800GTX2.

Well I should have enough money my December. Right now I have $190, and the computer I am building costs $542. I don't think the GTX260 will go down enough for me to get it unless I save up even more money, because right now the lowest I can find for it is $160. It would be cool though if it went down $60 in 2 months. :)
well being connected to the internet makes no difference to the performance of a laptop, plus you can't easily upgrade a laptop, if thats a single core 2.0 processor then no way, if its dual core then you might just get it on low, but as t5he others have said it depends massively on your graphics card, as its a laptop I'm guessing it'll be a low powered intergrated one . . . best way to check is to go Start > Run > type in dxdiag > clicl on the display tab, that'll have your g-card info !
Yes I have played Rome, I'd say its a very unfair comparision visually as playing rome after empire makes you want to desperatly upgrade its graphics . . . but you can't :( lol Personally for me I prefer Empire to Rome, however Rome is a classic and like a lot of TW fans I really would like a ROME 2 Total War just to see the improvements that CA would add from M2TW and Empire etc !
The melee combat looks much improved. I was shocked in amazement when I saw one of your soldiers go up behind a Prussian and strangle him with his musket. I was like "AWESOME :D".... Does stuff like that happen all the time? Like does the melee combat actually get down and dirty?
It looks like a definite purchase. I also love imperial/napoleonic age wars. They are just so unique.
Yeah the animations for Empire are amazing ! Yes they regularly stab each other in the chest then finish each other off with a whack to the face with their musket butt. Make sure your PC can handle Empire before you buy it, as it really does look its best on a good PC system !
Yeah my computer can handle it :) Probably not at high, but in between low and medium. My processor is more than enough (2.8 Ghz), and my 8400 gs can handle any last gen game maxed, and any current gen game at lowish to low mediumish settings :P
All I need is some more RAM and I'm good to go. I mean, I don't mind this game looking like RTW, hell just as long as the animations are there, I'm set :)

on the sea i usually dont get more then 30 in bad times and drops to 12 fps.
even overclocking @ 3,6 ghz cant keep me constantly > 25 fps

Upgrade? or do you mean Unlock? I have a video showing how to unlock all factions excluding emergent factions like the US, you can get another mod for that though. But you can already play them online and via the RTI campaign.

unlike rome and medieval, empire already has everything unlocked so you dont have to defeat nations to play as them, but the new units you have to buy from the steam store

Well you need a mod to unlock all the factions, just as you did with Rome or M2TW, however I miss the ability in Empire to gain access to a faction after you defeat them like in Rome and M2TW :P

DOn't bother, its just the same card that might run the game on 1 resolution higher...There is no practicle purpose. Get a GTX295 or just keep your current card.

Mate a GTS250 is not the same a a 4890HD, a 4890HD is quite a bit more powerful ! Its not just about being able to play on higer resolutions, its about getting better FPS too. It can match the power of a GTX285, a GTS250 if overclocked well could only just reach the power of a GTX260. Plus telling him to get a GTX295 isn't the smartest decision as unless he has a top of the range system atm he'll need a new PSU to run a GTX295 aswell !

Med-Low at best.
Upgrade RAM (definitely), your card will be able to run med-high wi decent ram on a lower resolution.

Hey sorry for the late reply, as Philzism said a 9800 will be fine, but if you can get a GTS250 go for it, its the upgraded remodeled version of the 9800GTX2 so its quite powerful :P

All in all my PC cost just over £400 very cheap because I built the PC myself from parts and I didn't need to buy any software as I already have it, and my card is better than a 9800GTX its even better than a 9800GTX2.

Im going to get a Nvidia 9800 gt when I build my computer. It's only $100. The best one out right now is the ATI Radeon 5800. But its very expensive.

haha yes just see my local site taht I use their top speced ATI 5870 costs £321.99 ! but the power of that thing woooo, I'm very interested to see how the Nvidia 300 series to going to match up to it :P Also when are you going to build your PC, you might find that by then a GTS250 of even the GTX260 is at a better price !

Well I should have enough money my December. Right now I have $190, and the computer I am building costs $542. I don't think the GTX260 will go down enough for me to get it unless I save up even more money, because right now the lowest I can find for it is $160. It would be cool though if it went down $60 in 2 months. :)

well being connected to the internet makes no difference to the performance of a laptop, plus you can't easily upgrade a laptop, if thats a single core 2.0 processor then no way, if its dual core then you might just get it on low, but as t5he others have said it depends massively on your graphics card, as its a laptop I'm guessing it'll be a low powered intergrated one . . . best way to check is to go Start > Run > type in dxdiag > clicl on the display tab, that'll have your g-card info !

Yes I have played Rome, I'd say its a very unfair comparision visually as playing rome after empire makes you want to desperatly upgrade its graphics . . . but you can't :( lol Personally for me I prefer Empire to Rome, however Rome is a classic and like a lot of TW fans I really would like a ROME 2 Total War just to see the improvements that CA would add from M2TW and Empire etc !

The melee combat looks much improved. I was shocked in amazement when I saw one of your soldiers go up behind a Prussian and strangle him with his musket. I was like "AWESOME :D".... Does stuff like that happen all the time? Like does the melee combat actually get down and dirty?
It looks like a definite purchase. I also love imperial/napoleonic age wars. They are just so unique.
Well, I'm definitely getting this game :)

Yeah the animations for Empire are amazing ! Yes they regularly stab each other in the chest then finish each other off with a whack to the face with their musket butt. Make sure your PC can handle Empire before you buy it, as it really does look its best on a good PC system !

Yeah my computer can handle it :) Probably not at high, but in between low and medium. My processor is more than enough (2.8 Ghz), and my 8400 gs can handle any last gen game maxed, and any current gen game at lowish to low mediumish settings :P
All I need is some more RAM and I'm good to go. I mean, I don't mind this game looking like RTW, hell just as long as the animations are there, I'm set :)
