I am Brazilian and none of those racers dead during races, except Petterson, was a talent, as some claim here. I think that Patrick Head and Frank Williams should be dead as well for being so stupid in welding Ayrton Senna´s car wheel bar, the cause of his death crash. Until today I hate Williams, I hate their team, and I don´t know how another brazilian racer, Rubens Barrichelo still races for Williams. Fuck them off!!!!!!!
Rubens doesn't want to retire from F1 but i guess he won't race during season 2012 (i haven't heard any news about his next move). I admit even after all these years, Senna's death still hurts me. when i saw his nephew Bruno drive during season even for points, when he stopped his car during practice session in Belgium, he opened his visor and looked into camera, he looked exactly like his uncle.
I don't want Rubens to retire yet, F1 needs driver like him
If I was ever a racing pilot with great talent like these guys I don't think you could pay me enough to pilot a formula 1 car from 60's and 70's... I have so much respect for this guys who race back then their passion and bravery is amazing.
i can't imagine how sad, and depressed, feeling of that racer who tried to save robert williamson from fire. hope this kind of thing never happened again
I was sitting on the turn at Watkins Glen in 1974 when Helmut Koinigg was killed right in front of me. It was the most horrific thing that I have ever witnessed. RIP Helmut.
You forgot Francois Cevert. His death is perhaps the most tragic of all of the ones, shown and not shown, since he was without a doubt a future world champion.
and almost Sergio Perez in Monaco 2011, it seemed so harmless and i saw it live. still he survived too and hopefully we never will see another death in F1 :)
schlesser one was an example of what was wrong with F1. the car was made of magnesium and NO ONE wanted it to race that day due to fears. they didn't even have the ability to put out the inferno once it went up. one of the good things about corporate F1 is that it did away with this shit. cigarette firms and oil magnates don't want their brand splashed across a burning car which led to more consideration...

@M4unlimited I don't want to be as critical but must agree with you. Where are the tributes to Cevert and Villeneuve. Part I was so touching -- Please consider another edit of Part II.
@mortisprobati No, not when "men were real men" - when F1 safety was utterly dire. Anyone can be a hero when the circumstances call for it, luckily F1 these days is extremely safe, but if you see a car on fire tomorrow with people in it you would rush to help.
It's like claiming "men were real men" when they would head off to a World War. Well there hasn't been one for some time now, so has every post-war male been a wimp compared to those before him?
The greatest part of this video is at 4.47 when a driver goes out of his car and helped the driver in the burning car, he was a hero but i didn't matter
@emanon86 Personally I would view it as FOM actually respecting the memories of former F1 drivers. This video is a fundamental glorification of the perverse nature human beings have of nosying in on gritty details. If this really was a "tribute" of any sort it would display the driver's accomplishments, and not their gruesome ends.
If you want to "experience their legacies" go and read one of the many books and films which have been made about them all individually.
@emanon86 F1 does not need a "timely reminder" of the inherent dangers- Massa was almost killed last year. Thanks to the striving of Sid Watkins, Max Mosley and the FIA safety standards have become exceptional. All this clip displays is how pathetically inadequate safety was in the '60s/'70s, and it glorifies their horrendous deaths.
Of course the FIA try to glamorise the sport! So, morally, what are they going to show to fans? The latest World Champion, or Schlesser's charred remains?
WoW! This is an amazing vid! It brings back so many memory's I was aged 13 when i saw life on dutch tv the Roger Wiliamson crash. I made a great impact on me,and i'm stil a F1 fan today. They are the heroes of F1.(missed Gilles Villeneuve by the way) I can remenber me an other bizar pit accident at Zandvoort. Some guy get torpedet by a car in the pitlane. The music is great in this vid. Thanks for posting.
AT THIS TIME FORMULA 1 RACERS WERE'NT MULTI MILLIONARIES BUT THEY GOT THE PASSION , REGARDLESS THE FIA WHO DIDNT CARE BOUT THEIR SAFETY , THEY RACED N THEY LOVED IT , TKS 2 ALL OF THEM 4 THE GREAT PAGES OF HISROY THEY WROTE , SOMETIME WITH THEIR BLOOD , THEY'RENT FORGOTTEN .
every time i watch David Purley risk his life and to save Roger Williamson's i tear up. Its because of these guys that we are where we are in cars today.. they made the ultimate sacrifice whether we realize it or not.. RIP... All you Man are Heros for eternity!
And in Brazil aui many as I never saw me or interested by F1 after this day, because today there is no emotion.
And roughly two months after burst of joy with our fourth championship in the world cup and how it was in the range that I tell the players exhibited the same: SENNA, THAT IS OUR tetracampeonato!!
When I finished and saw on TV what had happened I was petrified in front of the TV and on the day of his funeral TBM, I'm Brazilian, I never leave my country and saw a paralyzed parents facing this tragedy, because Senna was not only an F1 driver but a hero, thus transformed, not because he wanted to, but because our parents had the esteem so low, nor were winning in football is not anything in politics and economics that was great to see those crazy people running and the
I began to see the race and I helped my mother in the garden and heard the news of the strike and told her: "a moment he leaves the car as if nothing had happened," after all that had happened before and thought he had GPs far ahead and it was too tbm another death in the same GP.
nice to see 9 out of 10 drivers just passed the horrors just to finish the race shame on them.nothing is worth more than a human life.I love this sport but for god sake they all know the risks so blooody help them if it goes wromg
Most of these drivers died in the fire after the initial impact. terrible. Once all that fuel starts burning they had no way to put it out. They just had to let it burn itself out...
@thylegion whilst it looks like they were standing back and doing nothing, it would have been impossible for those martials, who didn't appear to be wearing any fire-resistant suits, to get near the car, as the heat would have been far too intense. I'm fairly sure David Purley did receive some minor burns as a result of trying to help, and he was wearing his fire-resistant race suit.
My heard goes out to that guy trying to lift that car on his own, but at the same time it was clear that no one else had fire suits on. They do try to push and i reckon everyone who went within 10 foot of that car ablaze on petrol would have suffered terrible burns.
@international153 No he didn't forget "This is the second version of part 2 of my tribute video, the first version was put offline due to copyright claims by FOM, I have cut all post 1980 footage so now I hope it should be ok." Anyway still a great pilot... as all in this video.
I know that Bruce McLaren lost his lie in a Can Am car during testing but I think he would have been a worthy addition to this montage considering his contribution, just saying. Anyway great job, have a wee tear in my eye.
fuck that has to be the hardest thing to ever have to face. a friend burning alive and all you can do is stand there and try and push the car. then just walk away cause theres nuttin you can do.
by Roger Williamson was the first man arriving a other F1 driver? he seems to have a fireproove suit on. he tried to help him but the car was to heavy. a real hero
@versager74 Yes, his name was David Purley and was Roger team mate and close friend. Until few years ago he was also the man surviving the highest deceleration in a car crash. 170g at Silverstone in 1977. I like to think someone in the sky that day remembered what he did in 1973.
@coland1982 God always remembers when His children try to do what is right by their fellow men. That is still one of the hardest race clips to watch not only because you know a man perished, but you can feel the anguish in Purley as he fights valiantly to save his friend, but to no avail. While it makes you sad it also makes you feel proud that humanity has people like him in it. I just hope God has comforted him in the years ahead and let him know that he did everything he could.
@coland1982 Someone in the sky, you mean some pilot flying around up there?
Purley suffered horrendous injuries from which he never fully recovered, and died in a plane crash in 1985. Yeah, someone in the sky was really remembering what happened in '73, in the same way that someone in the sky allowed Williamson to die in that Zandvoort crash.
@coland1982 Pur;ey was not team mate fot Williemson. Williamson drive March.Thay was not friend. This is just legend. That same year David Purley was awarded the George Medal for his rescue attempt.
@greenternet you are right they weren't team mates, but can't say about friends. both were rookies moving up to F1 at the time if i remember. it just seems purley was a great guy and the others deserve condemning. williamson was still alive. 1 person couldn't tip that car -20 drivers? well more likely. who won the race? no one cares. priorities...
@coland1982 Why are they just standing there watching him fucking burn ! And Although Purley tried to help he was pushed away, If that was my friend engulfed in flames no one would fucking push me away helping him, I would go savage at the marshells if they attempted to just let him die by keeping me away.
@versager74 Purley ruptured blood vessels in both of his arms trying to move the car... but also spare a thought for Alain Prost who was the first on the scene at De Angelis' crash at testing in 86... according to Alain he was concious and moving, but they couldn't move the car and so he suffucated...
4:46 : David Purley is a true hero, he bravely tried to save Roger Williamson from the flames, without fear of getting burnt himself. The marshals didn't know how to help or didn't tried to. We can see his pain when he realizes that WIlliamson is dead and that no one else stopped to help him.
i always cry at the crash at around 5.00 , i think its williamson or something like that and this guy wants to help him. i always wonder if williamson in heaven knows that there were someone who really wanted to save his life
@urugodeiv . That had no specific meaning, in fact their white coats were merely to show they were medics - for all the good they could do to Rindt, who had sustained life threatning injuries.
I respect the drivers of that time so much, they were real racers not like today, they got into those cars and drove knowing the extreme dangers, todays racers are more concerned about making the big dollars and being celebrities rather then being racers, just look at nascar, i miss the aj foyts, andretties, sennas, petty, allison, etc.
Re: Schlesser @ Rouen: Jackie Stewart wrote later that Jo's wife Annie and young daughter were separated from one another and lost in the crowd that day. Annie knew Jo had been in an accident, but didn't know if he'd been hurt or killed, and made her way down to trackside to find out.
If you've seen the clip, you'll know what she probably discovered, and you'll understand why she was taken from the scene in hysterics.
A tragedy needlessly compounded, perhaps, for his loved one. :(
Purley was heroic in his attempt. That footage gets me every time, so tragic. Shame Gilles isn't on here as well, but still, a great video. Thank you.
Here's to everyone who lost their lives in search of the ultimate ride - whatever the series.
@markyhallam I know what you mean, something there just turned me inside out. I never realised so many people lost their lives and that looked like one of the worst deaths you could have. Upside down burning, maybe still conscious...truely sad. To those passed on!
So sad to see the crash of Roger Williamson, who is that driver? So sad. He try's everything to save his life. If i was him, i was needing to feel myself very sick. He died. (Not the wrong of him)
I was feeling me sick because i was trying everything, but it dont works:(
The men that trys to save Roger williamson is * David Purley * David stop racing to help Roger but Roger is suffocation. It hurts to watch him so much struggle but it cant work :(
Definitely Williamson's death was the saddest, because it was also the most preventable in that he was still had only minor injuries when still in the car, although no-one apart from Purley tried to get him out
Gasoline is flammable. nowdays fuel is in a safetytank, inside strong carbonfiber body, and fuelpump is shutdown if accident happens, for example, if fuelpressuer is too low, pump stops, and does not spray fuel to redhot exhaust manifold.. 50-60 era was littlebit different time....

MrThreshold2009 1 year ago
@coland1982 Pur;ey was not team mate fot Williemson. Williamson drive March.Thay was not friend. This is just legend. That same year David Purley was awarded the George Medal for his rescue attempt.
greenternet 1 year ago
@greenternet you are right they weren't team mates, but can't say about friends. both were rookies moving up to F1 at the time if i remember. it just seems purley was a great guy and the others deserve condemning. williamson was still alive. 1 person couldn't tip that car -20 drivers? well more likely. who won the race? no one cares. priorities...
mercsmania 10 months ago
@coland1982 Why are they just standing there watching him fucking burn ! And Although Purley tried to help he was pushed away, If that was my friend engulfed in flames no one would fucking push me away helping him, I would go savage at the marshells if they attempted to just let him die by keeping me away.
chomps101 9 months ago
@chomps101 going "savage" at the marshalls wouldnt exactly put out the fire or turn the car over would it?
flipsidedogchop 8 months ago
He survive 179 g. People lose consciousness at 7 g.
JoeStrummerForever 7 months ago
@versager74 Purley ruptured blood vessels in both of his arms trying to move the car... but also spare a thought for Alain Prost who was the first on the scene at De Angelis' crash at testing in 86... according to Alain he was concious and moving, but they couldn't move the car and so he suffucated...

at 5:00 all the loosers driver passing without stopping....we will never never remember you f**king loosers!!
dengia 1 year ago
4:46 : David Purley is a true hero, he bravely tried to save Roger Williamson from the flames, without fear of getting burnt himself. The marshals didn't know how to help or didn't tried to. We can see his pain when he realizes that WIlliamson is dead and that no one else stopped to help him.
ced381 1 year ago 2
@ced381
the marshals didn't have fireproof suits on and they didn't had fire exthinguishers.
They couldn't do anything.

At the Jochen Rindt crash, you could see that the doctors who are running to his wreck, wear white hats...why did they wear white hats?
p.s: R.I.P, Jochen.
urugodeiv 2 years ago

Thank you.

Definitely Williamson's death was the saddest, because it was also the most preventable in that he was still had only minor injuries when still in the car, although no-one apart from Purley tried to get him out

why is the most accidents during the f1 50's and 60's era the cars where fire on??what happened with ???(sorry about my bad english)
GNRpimped 2 years ago
Gasoline is flammable. nowdays fuel is in a safetytank, inside strong carbonfiber body, and fuelpump is shutdown if accident happens, for example, if fuelpressuer is too low, pump stops, and does not spray fuel to redhot exhaust manifold.. 50-60 era was littlebit different time....
