hi mate cool little cabin.Im in the middle of cutting logs for my own little cabin. iv a bit of land exactly like yours, hope you dont mind me stealing your idea, but i was just wondering about the view. Ive got a good few big trees blocking the view and i suppose a good bit of the light. Just wondering if it spoils where the cabins is positioned or does it even bother you, just thinking whether to cut them down or not.
This was the title for that book by.... W. Ben Hunt ...." How to Build and Furnish a Log Cabin: The easy, natural way using only hand tools and the woods around you ". ( Long title, but it it a great log cabin book to have ).
Don't be in a hurry to chink the cabin, let it season and settle for a couple of years ( spraying it occasionally with a homemade insect repelant / wood preserver ), then peel the logs as much as possible, otherwise you will have some serious insect and rot problems. Look up an old book by Ben Hunt "log cabins and rustic furniture", it is one of the best handmade cabin books i have found !!!. He keeps it very simple and it is a great read !!!.
Mate that is one of the most beautiful little cabins i have ever seen. Those shingles are awesome and very pretty. I love the deck too although i would have to have a little wall thing for starry nights when i have had a few. tell me, did you work off plans or from a rough guide? Do you have any building experience? I am collecting cabins in my playlists. It all i can do until i can afford a few acres of my own.
@bilko1971 . Ha ha ya I expect that I'll have to do something about the safety factor too. I hope to have a few parties there this year, but trying to keep everybody alive with a 20 foot drop might be hard. This is my second cabin and the only plans are what I think up, but not to say that it hasn't been carefully thought over. I have some construction experience but mainly surveying work and concrete placement, so it didn't help much . . . common sense and Google sure helped fill in the rest.
@holpar01 . The location was chosen mainly because I could move a much larger log than usual with that slope working to my advantage. I found that I could move most logs within 5 minutes by using a 2 inch strap and just pulled them down the hillside from 100 feet up above the cabin site. Thanks for the comment.
@LiveBreatheOutdoors . I actually tend to keep fairly accurate records for my own curiosity so it worked out to about 13 weekends of 14hrs each. I am still waiting for a few months for the logs to settle and then to fill in the cracks between the logs, but that takes about another 10 hours, I'll do a video on that in spring.
could you fit a small stove in there? man that would be great to just go and get away from it all for a week or so. i could live in that! i was wondering , if you sealed the tops of the stumps with something eco friendly would the tree still try and grow? i have got to go and build one of these next summer
Hi Wrightylaaad, You read my mind! I do plan on building a stove/heater for this cabin, maybe out of a 20lb propane tank or something about that size. About the stumps, I don't expect them to try and grow any more, this type of tree is not that resilient.
looks great to me. it would bug me though with the angle of the veranda/platform part outside :>) . hope you can post some more videos/pics of this. i might just build one myself now!
Yea, I decided to use those two trees as my corner posts for the deck and as life has it, they grew where they grew. It makes for a unique design though and everything is level simply because I do have control over that part of the design. More pics can be found in my other vids.
Great location for a log cabin. And not to mention, lots of work to be done as a one man team. Good job!
